CAPT. HUGH TAYLOR KILLED. Captain Hugh Taylor of the Coldstream Guards, who has been killed in action, Born in Newcastle, he was the son of Mr. T . Taylor, Chipchase castle, Northumberland, and was the grandson of the founder of Ryhope Colliery. He was prospective Unionist candidate for Sunderland. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 29th of December 1914.
During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.
The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images and have any stories and information to add please comment below.

Kai Yu is currently working for his Master Degree of Arts by Research in Development Studies at University of Melbourne; before this he finished his Master of Engineering in Food Science in College of Food Science, South China Agricultural University, where he became a faculty member as a lecturer of food science upon graduation. He had been simultaneously teaching in New Oriental Education Group on English examination preparation since 2006. His most favorite TED talkers Malcolm Gladwell, Jan Chipchase and TED related figures like Muhammad Yunus and Howard Moskowitz are inspiring him to contribute to a more interesting world. He is engaged in research of cultural studies, consumer science, emerging food technology, biokinetics, English examination preparation strategy, and English education, under the belief that knowledge is boundless. The mission in TEDtoChina is to help remove the hindrance of understanding and feeling about TED, and long term vision is to turn TED into an educational recourses as one of the stimulus for pushing education in China forward. What he is trying to do now in TEDto China is to provide the context of TED talk by his writing.

AUCB final show, Fine Art.
I am rather old-fashioned about Fine Art, and some of the show in this faculty was not of great interest.
We did enjoy this, however.
It is by Diane Chipchase, who is also a Registered General Nurse.
She says
"As an artist, I draw inspiration from the natural world. I take pleasure from making work which uses the natural landscape and then contradicts its own naturalness. I seek to explore the juxtaposition of natural and man-made worlds as well as the potential communication and symbiotic association between the two.
Recent considerations have been the physical and metaphysical relationships between and animate and inanimate objects. The hybridisation of two such items by a physical blending has led to the production of new creations which challenge the eye as well as the intellect. However, when the relationship becomes metaphysical, it provokes the viewer to make a leap of faith and imagination themselves. They have to stand in the void and discover what lies in that space. I enjoy tantalising my audience by creating work which asks questions, but does not necessarily offer all the answers."
