Kai Yu is currently working for his Master Degree of Arts by Research in Development Studies at University of Melbourne; before this he finished his Master of Engineering in Food Science in College of Food Science, South China Agricultural University, where he became a faculty member as a lecturer of food science upon graduation. He had been simultaneously teaching in New Oriental Education Group on English examination preparation since 2006. His most favorite TED talkers Malcolm Gladwell, Jan Chipchase and TED related figures like Muhammad Yunus and Howard Moskowitz are inspiring him to contribute to a more interesting world. He is engaged in research of cultural studies, consumer science, emerging food technology, biokinetics, English examination preparation strategy, and English education, under the belief that knowledge is boundless. The mission in TEDtoChina is to help remove the hindrance of understanding and feeling about TED, and long term vision is to turn TED into an educational recourses as one of the stimulus for pushing education in China forward. What he is trying to do now in TEDto China is to provide the context of TED talk by his writing.

(Since its building in 1868, the church had no major change until the replacement of the original tower, considerably and dangerously weakened by the vibration of the engines of the Dunkeswell based US Navy Liberators and Catalinas of Fleet Air Wing 7, from 1943-45. The tower had to be demolished urgently in 1947, and was not to be rebuilt for another 7 years, the bells being restored to the tower.in 1959)

Alexander Cochran Dead
After a week’s serious illness Alexander Cochran died at 9:05 this morning at the age of 80 years at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H. J. Chipchase on Fifth Ave East. The funeral services will be held from the Chipchase home, 205 Fifth Avenue East, with Rev. Houghton officiating and the Joe Hooker Post in charge of the ceremonies, as Mr. Cochran was a member of the local post of the G. A. R.
Mr. Cochran was born in Chillocothe, Ohio, April 14, 1832, the youngest of ten children of Col. And Mrs. Will Cochran. They lived in Ohio then moved to Indiana and Illinois where he was married on March 25, 1855, to Sabra J. Davidson, who is still living, and to this union seven children were born, five of whom are now dead, and the two living are Mrs. H. J. Chipchase and Roy Cochran both of this city. The only close relative of Mr. Cochran’s that is now living is a sister, Mrs. N. B. Newman of Indiana, who will be unable to attend the funeral. Mrs. H. L. Argenbright, and husband a sister of Mrs. Cochran will come from Blandensville, Indiana, for the funeral and relatives from Nickerson will also attend.

CAPT. HUGH TAYLOR KILLED. Captain Hugh Taylor of the Coldstream Guards, who has been killed in action, Born in Newcastle, he was the son of Mr. T . Taylor, Chipchase castle, Northumberland, and was the grandson of the founder of Ryhope Colliery. He was prospective Unionist candidate for Sunderland. This photograph was published in the Illustrated Chronicle on the 29th of December 1914.
During the Great War the Illustrated Chronicle published photographs of soldiers and sailors from Newcastle and the North East of England, which had been in the news. The photographs were sent in by relatives and give us a glimpse into the past.
The physical collection held by Newcastle Libraries comprises bound volumes of the newspaper from 1910 to 1925. We are keen to find out more about the people in the photographs. If you recognise anyone in the images and have any stories and information to add please comment below.
