The Chilean flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis) is a large species of flamingo at 110–130 cm (43–51 in) closely related to American flamingo and greater flamingo, with which it was sometimes considered conspecific. The species is listed as near threatened by the IUCN.

It breeds in South America from Ecuador and Peru to Chile and Argentina and east to Brazil; it has been introduced into Germany and the Netherlands (colony on the border, Zwillbrocker Venn). Also, a small population occurs in Utah and California. Like all flamingos, it lays a single chalky-white egg on a mud mound.

These flamingos are mainly restricted to salt lagoons and soda lakes but these areas are vulnerable to habitat loss and water pollution.

Rano Raraku volcano, now extinct, was formed more than 300,000 years ago. The volcano has a maximum height of 160 meters (525ft) on its southeast edge and the crater has an elliptical shape, the widest part is about 700 meters (2,297ft). Inside the caldera is a freshwater lagoon with lots of vegetation, it is about 3 to 4 meters (10-13ft) deep because of the frequent rainfall on the island. On the southeast side there are moai statues on the hill.

Nacional Torres del Paineis a national park encompassing mountains, glaciers, lakes, and rivers in southern Chilean Patagonia. The Cordillera del Paine is the centerpiece of the park. It lies in a transition area between the Magellanic subpolar forests and the Patagonian Steppes. The park is located 112 km (70 mi) north of Puerto Natales and 312 km (194 mi) north of Punta Arenas. The park borders Bernardo O'Higgins National Park to the west and the Los Glaciares National Park to the north in Argentine territory.

From QF27 flying into Santiago, the best view of the Chilean Andes but wondering will the BA flight leave for London?

Then wondering is anyone down there looking up at me? What are they doing?

No, this wasn't taken in Chile but this is an attempt to recreate some of that Andean scenery, and a pretty good attempt at that, by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Scotland

Having been pleasantly surprised by a visit to Benmore Botanic Garden a few years ago, that I won in a competition, I remember thinking the relatively newly planted hillside and viewpoint was quite atmospheric and would be worth future visits. I would look forward to seeing how the different varieties of monkey puzzle were progressing having grown up in a house that had a fine specimen in the garden and fond memories of this. The refuge would also be a good picnic place, especially if the weather wasn't too good.

Well a recent visit after a few years didn't disappoint. We made our way up to the viewpoint and had our sandwiches and then had a very leisurely walk back down through the different settings.

Years ago if my parents were going somewhere and asked if I wanted to go with them, without thinking, the answer would usually be no, especially if the name of the place to be visited included the word garden. Who wants to visit a garden? Boring!

Maybe I have become my parents but Benmore has so much more to offer than a garden. Yes, part of it is a garden but most of it is a network of trails and follies with some real gems hidden amongst it set on a hillside near Dunoon. Great place just for a walk but also to take your dog for a walk, ours loved it and the network of paths are well maintained. maybe they should rename it Benmore Trails and more people might visit.

Home also to an avenue of Giant Redwoods and a Victorian Fernery plus numerous little huts/follies.
