I have only one outlet in my garage and it's located on an inside wall right next to my electrical panel. Plugging the EVSE in at that location would have been fine for those times when the car is in the garage. The charge cord simply would not reach for those times when the car is outside.
The solution was to run an extension cord out near the door. I decided to use a 25 foot 12 gauge cord and mount the EVSE out near the door. Frankly, I needed a cord out there to power the wall hung vacuum cleaner.
From this location, the charge cord easily reaches the car in or out of the garage and doesn't interfere with door closure.
Someday I would like to install permanent 220v and 115v outlets in this area.
The stock EVSE takes about 12 hours to recharge a depleted battery. This is typically not a problem when charging overnight. A 220v charger only takes 4-1/2 hours which could be handy from time to time.
EVSE = Electric Vehicle Service Equipment.
We often refer to these as “chargers” but in reality they are simply a connection between an electrical power source, the cars builtin charger, and the cars computer which regulates how much is needed to recharge the battery.
