Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit #AR70

2020 Chevy Suburban

Auburn Hills, MI

This is one of nine (9) Traffic Crash Reconstruction Units in Michigan.

(1) for each of the MSP eight (8) Districts except for the Second district (Wayne, Oakland & Macomb Counties) which has (1) at the Metro North Post in Oak Park & (1) at the Metro South Post in Taylor.

The Michigan State Police is the only law enforcement agency in the State of Michigan that is a participating organization within the Accreditation Commission for Traffic Accident Reconstruction (ACTAR) and requires all departmental traffic crash reconstruction specialists to be accredited by that organization.

The primary responsibility of the reconstruction specialist is the investigation and reconstruction of traffic crashes and the providing of expert testimony in court. Requests for service come from State Police posts, county sheriffs, local police departments, county prosecutors' offices, and the state Attorney General's office.

This unit was started in the mid-1970's.

Nome Alaska is different from your average American town in a number of ways. One thing we saw was that, occasionally, when a piece of machinery dies the owner just leaves it lie where it succumbed to its final disease.

Folks are apparently welcome to take parts off as needed. I’ve put up a few photos which Ron took of cars and trucks just kind of being used that way along the roadside.

Out birding one day with Ron and Sam, I was driving just on the edge of Nome on the road heading out to Teller when we spotted a small airplane that was abandoned in a gravel waste area.

I admit I’m a bit of a ham, so when it comes to unusual scenic shots I like to be in them. I think I do this as a way to remind myself later, but it could just be a proof of attendance as well. Anyway, I stopped the Suburban and asked Ron to snap a couple photos which are also seen.

My favorite, however is one Ron took of a bicycle down near the wharf where they unload the barges that bring most everything that is needed into town.

I’m assuming that one of the trucks ran over it and it was abandoned. The beauty is the humor of the person who stood it up and put the “For Sale” sign on it.

The Chevrolet Suburban series have a long history: already in 1935 the first model was introduced.

This Suburban C-30 is from the fifth 1960-1966 generation. This bonnet type was first used in 1962. In 1964 this panoramic windshield disappeared.

The film Dante's Peak was filmed in or around the town of Wallace, Idaho in 1996. This collection compares scenes from the movie with their real life counterparts, taken in 2007 while working a summer job in the area. I love the film, and I had a lot of time on my hands, enjoy!

An RCMP-escorted motorcade of about a dozen buses passes BC Place on the Cambie Street Bridge on its way downtown. Asked a couple of the 1,700 officers from 118 departments across Canada here for the Games if they knew who was in the buses. They didn't. Must be the International Olympic Committee (IOC) heading to their hotel, the Westin Bayshore.

Have several pictures of the logjam of Mercedes and SUVs stuck behind this Motorcade and -- being Vancouver drivers -- trying to find a way around it. But the Expo Boulevard is closed!

Nome Alaska is, if you ask me, a great place. I just love it up there. The birding is spectacular, and all the people I met that lived there impressed me as folks I wouldn’t mind having as neighbors. I’m sure there are difficulties, as there are in any town, however, in my stays there I only heard one nearby late night drunken argument.

There are some neat features to the landscape as well. Tundra and willows are the predominant vegetation of the whole Seward Peninsula where the village is located.

Walking on tundra is a pretty rugged experience. The ground up there has a permanent frost just under the surface which, with the moss, gives it an unusual feel. Birders say it is like; “Walking on bedsprings over bowling balls.”

Beautiful mountains surround Nome with rivers and streams meandering along bringing water to the coast from all directions because the village is situated along the Norton Sound on the Bering Sea.

There were really only three main roads when last I was there, one each heading basically in one direction, either north, east, or west. The roads only go about 80 miles in their respective directions.

The winding Kougarok Road which wends its way northward to the Kougarok river where there is what I call the “Real Bridge to Nowhere”. I’m pictured here standing on it.

You will notice that on the near side, where Ron stood to take the photo, that the road isn’t much, but if you look carefully at the far side you’ll see that there “ ain’t nuttin’ ” !!!

Thanks Saanich Police for letting me taking pictures

I’ve been posting about Nome Alaska lately. I mentioned the Chevy Suburban which we rented from the Alaska Cab Garage. We called it “The Bird Blind”.

This was because the terrain around Nome is all tundra and willows, and since there isn’t much vegetation to hide behind you need a “Blind”.

In a couple earlier posts there are pictures of “The Blind” being used as a kitchen, and on top of Anvil Mountain.

In the photos below you can see “The Blind” in various other settings in and around Nome.
