Also marketed as the GMC and Pontiac Safari, the Chevrolet Astro was a mid-sized van built by the General Motors Corporation between 1985 and 2005, with two generations being covered during its 20 year lifetime. This vehicle was marketed in passenger as well as cargo and livery configurations. General construction of the vehicle included a 4.3L General Motors V6 producing 190hp with unibody construction, a separate front engine/suspension sub-frame, leaf-spring rear suspension, rear bi-parting doors and a seating capacity of up to eight passengers.
Primary competitors for the Astro/Safari were the likes of the Plymouth Voyager/Dodge Caravan, as well as to foreign intruders such as Toyota products. The Safari was marketed as a minivan, though sized between the Chevrolet Venture/Lumina APV unibody minivan and the full-size Chevy Van/Express. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, it had powertrain components in common with GM's other light trucks and up to a 5,500lb towing capacity.
Both Pontiac and GMC have used the Safari nameplate (GMC belonged to the Pontiac/GMC Division), Pontiac used the nameplate on several of its station wagon models from 1955-1989. The two Safaris, both Pontiac and GMC, were marketed simultaneously, at times by the same dealership from 1985 through to 1989.
Cars like these are common in the United States, but many find their way here to Britain as well. Their sheer size and huge amounts of power make them the ideal motorhome to British alternatives, although the expense of importing cars from outside the EU has put many off the idea.

Seen at my moms and my house on Nov 25,1993 with my fathers old 1980 caprice now my sister and brother in laws car after my father passed away in early Oct 1992 they owned it for a few more years before it needed to many repairs and my brother Ernie's 1986 Astro is behind it and my grey 1987 Chevy van is beside the caprice.
Introduced in August 1984 for the 1985 model year, the midsize Chevy Astro and GMC Safari vans were larger than Chrysler's minivans, but smaller than conventional full size vans, aiming at commercial and fleet use. Passenger and cargo versions were offered, with the Astro and Safari RWD and having higher GVWR than minivans, offering up to 170.4 cubic feet volume. AWD was optional starting in 1990 and a standard air bag added for 1994. A 1995 restyle resulted with the short wheelbase models dropped and only the extended length vans offered. A interior refresh and dual airbags followed in 1996, standard daytime running lights for 1997, standard theft-deterrent system in 1998, AWD improvements with a new electronic transfer case for 1999, a larger fuel tank in 2000 and keyless entry and rear heater on cargo vans for 2002, followed by brake system improvements in 2003 with Dynamic Rear Proportioning (DRP) and standard 16 inch wheels for 2004.
No notable changes came for 2005, the final year for the Astro and Safari. Production ran for 21 years, with the last vans rolling out of GM's Baltimore assembly plant on Friday, May 13, 2005.
Base 2005 Astro vans started at $24,430 suggested factory delivered retail price (FOB Baltimore) with AWD optional at $2,000.

I've never photographed an Ottawa police "paddy wagon" before!
I found this police van parked in the Daly Avenue tunnel, under the Ottawa Congress Centre and the Rideau Centre.
I guess the Daly Avenue tunnel is the best public road on which to park if you want larger police vehicles close to the Winterlude festivities on the Rideau Canal, but out of sight.
