Usually, you pay for the amount of bags you use and bag your own groceries. The cashier just sits and takes your money.
Checkout worker at Target sporting a mask and gloves due to the corona virus. This made me feel a bit strange since this is now the state of the world and how its now normal to see somebody wearing a surgical mask.

There are only 40 cans visible in this photo, but the customer ended up purchasing 96 cans.
She had actually picked out 90 cans - divided into stacks of five - by flavour. When the cashier asked how many, she responded "Five", thinking the cashier was asking how many cats she had. The cashier had to ask "How many cans - are they all in stacks of five?", and then the cashier had to count them.
As she rung them through, the cash register hit the max limit for that item, so the cashier had to call a manager over to override the system. The manager said that they should ring it through as a caselot, even though it was individual items. They did the math, and figured out the customer would need 6 extra cans, and yet it would still work out cheaper than a per-item price.
So, she paid, and then went to get the extra cans. Yeah. 96 cans of Fancy Feast. A Prawn's Delight.
