I had to go to the eye doctor today. I finally decided that I needed a new pair of glasses since I've had my old ones since seventh grade. I also thought a checkup might be a good idea since I haven't had my eyes checked in about ten years. Personally, I think this turned out pretty well considering that I couldn't see when i took it, uploaded it, or edited it due to those dilated eyes!

Little side trip on the way home from dental checkup ... through lovely downtown Birdseye ...

Indiana became the 19th state in 1816 ... first state capitol was Corydon ... about 60 miles east of here right on the Ohio River.

Birdseye is a tiny town along the Norfolk Southern RR and State Road 64 about 15 miles west of Huntingburg and 25 miles north of the Ohio. The southern edge of town is the start of a wonderful part of southern Indiana ... this is at a corner of Perry County ... one of the most remote, rural, and wild territories along the Indiana side of the Ohio River.

Southern Indiana is situated at the extreme northern reaches of the incredible Appalachian Hardwoods ... the most significant hardwood forest on the planet. We enjoy virtually every hardwood species native to North America, and this specific area has thrived on creating products from that resource. At any given time, DuBois County is home to some 30, 40, or 50 companies utilizing hardwood raw materials. Cabinets, office furniture, home furnishings, pianos, organs, and a number of miscellaneous products all find their way to markets worldwide from this area. Near here is home to Kimball Organs and Pianos, OFS Office Furniture Systems, and dozens of smaller woodworking plants, Birdseye once contributed a significant volume of board feet to that product stream.

Interesting tale concerning the town name ... the story told involves a founder named Bird who was evidently the "leader" of the group. Looking for a site to construct a Post Office, one fella in the group, finally finding a good spot, proclaimed, "This spot should suit old Bird's eye!" Originally intended to be named "Bird", the new name stuck immediately!! Now don't take that to the bank, but that's even the "history" given in Wikipedia!

Subtitle - 'How many PhD's does it take to catch an alligator?' ......actually only one holding the gator's head (me), the others are part of our research team and are the real experts!......and visitors.... in this picture alone are some (about 6) of the top crocodilian research biologists in the world.

Large 11 ft male alligator from MINWR. Caught this guy for a health check up - we had a major workshop on "Alligator biology and ecotoxicology" at Kennedy Space Center the 10th and 11th of Nov. Work presented was based on the work we have done on gator health and ecotoxicology at MINWR over the last four years. Had folks from Japan and South Africa who are collaborators on this work visit as part of the workshop and then we took them out after talks to demonstrate gator checks etc.

While in Chennai I decided to get a general checkup by the dentist, apparently this dentist is very highly recommended as one of the best Asia has to offer, within a minute of looking at my teeth she noticed a problem that the X-Rays later confirmed.

She explained that I have a narrow jaw, which as she put it, is very good looking but not very accommodating for all my teeth, Because of this my wisdom teeth are clearly coming in at a very bad angle and had to be removed,

The only option for removal was surgery under general anesthesia. Well all 4 wisdom teeth are now out; the surgery was two and a half hours.

Don't think the doc put into perspective how much pain I would be in after the surgery and how swollen my face would get.

It’s a slight setback to the plans but it was best to take care of this issue before it became a bigger more painful problem.

Visitin the doctor for checkup (:

Tis that time of year when many folks in Japan take their annual health checkup. As with previous years, I took along the camera to document everything.

Later on in the day, I was to have my blood sample taken - the result was that I have an abnormal amount of white blood cells - me better go back to the hospital to follow up.

Wasn't fond of needles for a while (not that I'm fond of them now) as when I was back in the UK, the nurse who was trying to take a blood sample kept missing the vein and I ended up with 5 extra holes in my arm! I got nervous and passed out ^^;
