Women bring their newborn babies for a medical checkup at a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) health centre in the Ndjenja Resettlement camp, Mozambique, Friday 28 Feb 2020.
The climate crisis continues to impact Mozambique and women and girls remain the most vulnerable. Research shows that more than half of maternal deaths take place in countries impacted by humanitarian crises, and that gender-based violence is exacerbated in times of crisis. One year after cyclone Idai made landfall in Mozambique, significant health and protection-related needs remain for girls and women.

Jack's eight month checkup was this afternoon...I always clear my schedule when he has a checkup...sure, I want to see the results of his growth from the last visit to our pediatrician and of course I want to know he is healthy. But selfishly I love going to the pediatricians office because I get great lighting with my off camera flash in the examining room. I have tons f shots from today and past visits. Shots from past visits can be seen in my "Project 365 Jack" set.

Colorado State University veterinary students Stacey Rael and Adam Nylund and Ophthalmologist Dr. Cynthia Powell examine Sunggles a miniature horse who underwent eye surgery at Colorado State University in October 2008, during a checkup February 8, 2013 at the CSU James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Snuggles, who is 7, lost her left eye when she was a month old to an infection. Her right eye has glaucoma. Snuggles lives in Texas with Minis and Friends South Plains. She is part of a group of miniature horses that travel across the state of Texas visiting rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, Alzheimer's units, special-needs children centers and hospitals to bring cheer to patients through equine therapeutic healing.
our granddaughters had some excitement. Let me tell it as narrated by the 9 year old, and the photos are from her mother's cell phone
Yesterday after school, a Bob White (which are not normally seen in our area) flew into our glass door & knocked itself out. Our big dog, Agramonte, proceeded to investigate. He pawed at it & then picked it up in his mouth.
Thank goodness Mom was able to get Agramonte to drop it! We were so worried about the health & safety of the bird (which was identified as a Bob White by Grandpa) that we decided to bring it to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Elburn at the Forest Preserve on Rt 38. When we brought the box (covered with a white cloth) into the Center, the naturalist uncovered the box & the bird flew out & all around the Center's Office!! The naturalist examined the bird & determined that it was not injured. She then asked us to bring the bird back home to our house & set it free!! It was quite an exciting time at the Orama house, but everything ended well as the bird flew off into the prairie behind our house!!

we had another normal "healthy checkup" visit with the pediatrician today and discovered that, we'd been fooled by faulty scales and that he's not really broken the 8 pound mark just quite yet. today he tipped the scales at 7 pounds 14.5 ounces or about 3586 grams.
his last couple of weighins have been done when he was fully clothed which was obviously contributing to the artificial gains.
but not to worry, it still appears that he's gained about 20 ounces in 14 days, so he's still doing great with his weight gains ( anything above an ounce a day is fantastic ) and the pediatrician doesn't feel that he needs any additional fortifier, which is super good because he's been nursing so much that he hasn't been getting any fortifier anyway.
the doctor said that he wanted to order a "download" of the data from his home monitor and if the neonatologists thought that everything looked o.k. then he'll finally be "unwired"! i suspect the process of doing the download and everyone consulting with each other might take about a week, so we'll have to deal with false alarms and wires for just a bit longer.

so let's see. still very uncreative with my titles. and whoa.. october was a busy month. hard to believe hardly strictly bluegrass was just one month ago. my sister made quite a few appearances this month, as did my kiddo, the golden gate bridge (ya.. i just can't help myself), the dogs and chickens too, and there are random details of things that are fab reminders of what i did each day since i can hardly remember what i did yesterday.. that's a good thing. :) the iphone came in handy, although things didn't go quite as planned, i still have a lot of editting, sorting and deleting to do. over the next few months. couple lensbaby shots in there. but not really any new techniques. maybe in the next few months i suppose. planning to play with some lighting and photoshop finally.

So what if she's actually 16 months?
Anyhow, ME is too big now for the baby scale. She was too big for it last time -- you can see how her legs were hanging off. So this time the nurse just had ME step up on the scale all by her own self. I was amazed she stood still long enough to get a reading, actually.
Mary Ellen now weighs 12kg, which equates to 26 and a quarter pounds. She's 32" tall, and her head is 19" in circumference. She's 90th percentile in weight, 87th percentile in height, and 98th percentile in head circumference.
ME checked out quite well, with one exception. She's supposed to be saying at least three to six words by now, but she doesn't say anything. Sometimes we can get her to babble, "Ma ma ma ma ma ma ma," but it doesn't mean anything to her. She does comprehend -- she can point to her belly and her toes, and tonight when I told her to go to her room (just to see if she'd do it), she toddled all the way down the hall. I think she's just too busy figuring out the world to talk.
But I have a referral in to the early intervention people, and they'll come out to do an assessment to see if they need to help her out with anything.
It might just be that she can't get a word in edgewise, not with Grace in the house.
She received both the seasonal and the H1N1 flu vaccines today, but while she was getting the H1N1, the needle popped off the syringe. They're not sure how much of the vaccine she got, but she needs two doses anyhow for full efficacy.
Before making any decision, it is advisable that you speak with your dentures and implant dentist in Ahmedabad and share your concerns. This will help you in understanding which treatment would suit your requirement perfectly as dentists know it better what can give you more prominent and effective outcome.

Had my annual checkup today. Glad to report that everything is A-OK with my pearly whites. (Digital X-ray of 'em pictured above.) The dental hygenist said, "You have such a clean mouth!" Yeah, well...clean mouth, dirty mind.
Seriously though, don't forget to floss.

Opaque Watercolor painting of a scene from Arthur C. Clarke's novel "The Deep Range". In the novel, mankind farms the oceans and herds the great whales like cattle. This painting depicts a veterinarian in his two-man submarine, taking a reading of the heart beat of a sperm whale.

Here is Maple with Dr. Dacosta, getting a checkup 2 weeks after his ACL repair surgery. All went well, although Maple looks like he just wants to get out of the place. ;-)
The joint is stable, he's progressing well, and should be putting his leg down in the next 2 weeks. He's lost about 4 lbs. and muscle tone in the leg, but it's all temporary. It'll be a looooong recovery....
Now I'm off to the countryside to get Maple's custom-made leg brace.
Photos of that to follow.
Tummy's at its 32 week checkup. Yikes!
Hope to get some drugs for this cold.

My boys are at their semi-annual dental checkup and cleaning. Mom is settling in, grabbing a magazine to read while I wait. (I'm so lucky they don't just carry the style and feel horrible about yourself lady magazines and actually carry intelligent content like Smithsonian and Kiwi.) Meanwhile my older son came across this bug book. Buzzing Insects was written by a Local Chicagoian Tom Greve. Its all about insects that sting (and don't).
We were reading the page about a Bee and a Horse "Mimic" Fly. This little boy who just finished his appointment, as is often the case with me and kids, he wandered across the room to see what we were chatting about. He loved hearing that the look-a-like bee was actually a mimic.
My older son proceeded to explain that his huge black eyes are different from a regular bee. Also the fly has 2-wings and a real bee has 4-wings (2-pairs). His mom stood nearby - as is also the frequent case - when the kids come to talk / listen to us. We love reading these books anywhere we find them because we always find a new tidbit inside for our storage bank of bug knowledge.
