MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS

One in five Canadians will experience a mental health problem or illness in their lifetime; mental health problems or illnesses also indirectly affect many Canadians through a family member, friend or colleague.

Stigma or discrimination attached to mental illnesses presents a serious barrier, not only to diagnosis and treatment but also to acceptance in the community.

Approximately 70 per cent of mental health problems and illnesses have their onset during childhood or adolescence. Identifying the signs early and getting connected to tools and support is the most important way to prevent problems from becoming worse. Mental health problems and illnesses can be treated effectively.

These statistics were compiled from information available through the following websites: Mental Health Commission of Canada, Canadian Mental Health Association, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

MINDCHECK.CA

Mindcheck.ca features the personal accounts of Kevin Bieksa, interactive quizzes and information, and connections to resources and local services. To broaden the reach and increase public awareness and support for mental health issues, BC residents had the opportunity to add their video to the “In One Voice” campaign within the site by recording and uploading a pledge.

By enhancing mental health literacy, this partnership has helped improve early recognition of mental health concerns, encourage the use of effective self‐care strategies, and facilitate navigation of mental health services in BC.

On Friday the 24th June I went for my 3 month checkup. I was all clear which was a massive relief... 3 months prior to this they discovered a malignant lump in my bladder which they removed. I think it was this discovery that started me balancing my work and social life a bit better, and led to my hobby of taking photographs for pleasure rather than just to record events... resulting in my recent activities on Flickr :-)

More often than not, I’m great about being on top of the things I need to stay on top of and handling the tasks that need handled ASAP.

Growing up and going to the dentist when I should have, however, wasn’t one of those things. And at times, my teeth and dental health paid for it.

You see, I come from a family that didn’t focus so much on dental health as they probably could have. We went to the dentist often when we were little, but once we hit high school, things dropped off. And then, once I had graduated and was on my own, I took that same approach to the dentist as my parents did and just never went for a long stretch of time.

Before I knew it, I had some #toothaches that seemingly came out of nowhere but happened, without a doubt, because of my neglect to my #dental #health. I finally made the call to the dentist to set up an appointment after 10 long years of not visiting my dentist.

Needless to say, I wasn’t surprised to hear them tell me that I had developed 6 cavities and a minor case of gingivitis. And that wasn’t even counting the wisdom teeth that needed to be taken care of sooner or later, one of which was experiencing some significant tooth decay.

Anyway, after getting my six cavities filled across two different #appointments, I felt a lot better and on top of things with my teeth than I had in over a decade. And the funny thing is, doing this inspired me to keep going back, to stay on a schedule with my appointments, and to do the right things day in and day out with brushing, flossing, and keeping my #gumline clean and #healthy.

It’s funny how one thing can lead to another, leading to an entire snowball effect with health and happiness. I wouldn’t necessarily say that I wasn’t happy before my trips to the dentist, but such things can make you feel a lot more confident in yourself and happy with how things are trending. And then, the next thing you know you’re staying on top of other things in your life you’ve been putting off and things just end up being so much better than they were beforehand. All it takes is a little bit of effort, some good news, and holding yourself accountable and the pieces just sort of fall into place for you.

G. had his blood pressure taken for the first time at his recent pediatrician visit. How much did he love watching that gauge go up as the nurse squeezed the bulb?! She even let him pump it himself at the end, which was so great. No better way to get a kid's buy-in.

Our son has been going with us to the dentist all his life and is now in the chair as well. No fear!

She knows she's about to get three vaccination shots. She handled it very well.

Grace had her 4 year checkup today. I was so not prepared for this. **Sniff, sniff** My baby's not a baby anymore. I just need to accept it and move on. This appointment was like a physical even down to the paper exam gown. She passed all the tests with flying colors. She can hear, see, is not color blind, has good blood pressure and can jump on one foot. As the doctor and I joked, passing all of these tests clearly makes her a genius. Genius, not so sure but she definitely holds my heart in her hands.

We offer muffins, games, and free gyno checkups. :)

It's that time again. Teeth cleaning for everyone. I had a shot similar to this earlier, but since I was sick all day and this was the only decent shot out of the 5 I took today, here you go. Day 282 done. Now off to bed.

It is not a sight you may be familiar with. A roadside checkup for elephants in Sumatra. The traffic stops and the crowds grow to watch these amazing animals receive a checkup by the road side. Taking the weight, girth and height of the elephant helps determine the dosage of medication from vitamins to worm medication. Just like us humans the animals also need to have checkups and be kept in good health.

This is the life of the elephants that are now part of the elephant camps across Sumatra. They all take the same route, starting from wild elephants their habitat is reduced to the point where they have no place to go. Replaced with oil palm plantations, illegal logging and various other forms of unsustainable income that destroys the natural habitat of the endangered species of Sumatra. Thus resulting in elephants (and other species) entering nearby villages, destroying crops and often ending in the death of elephants when in conflict with us humans.

The elephants that do survive conflict are captured and end up in the elephant camps across Sumatra, a program specially designed to provide homes for “pest” elephants that are caught in conflict.

This is the unfortunate reality these amazing animals are faced with and will continue as long as we keep our course for “economic stability”.

I am just one individual doing what I can to help. We can all help more than you know be it big or small. If you want to assist me and my work see the link in the my bio where you will find my projects that help provide a better life for the individuals in these camps and the work to help protect the last remaining wild habitats across Sumatra.

Thank you and any comments are always welcome.

Great day today! After a dental checkup and several hours of nappage to combat recent lack of sleep and an achy bug, I set out to catch up on my photogging. After snapping some photos at Castle Otttis and a county park at Vilano Beach, I ventured west to exchange equipment with a coworker. While waiting to meet her in a church parking lot, I engaged a family of stuffed scarecrows in a photo shoot. The lady seemed a bit shy, hiding behind her straw hat... but I managed to get a smile from her!
