(This is so unnecessarily long, I'm so sorry. Please feel free to skip to the end)

I posted two months ago that we were taking Pansy here and her brother Tyson to the PSPCA to get checkups and shots up to date. We asked about her weight loss and were told it was likely worms and/or her age and pretty much brushed off. We had to go back a month later anyway for a second round of shots, so we heard what we wanted to hear, I think.

So we brought them back on February 25th and had them give both dogs de-wormer medication as a precaution and brought a stool sample from Pansy. They saw no evidence of worms, but said she could still have them. We then asked for blood work to be done just in case. We had to be really insistent about it, and I think that is because the PSPCA is not used to people wanting to spend any "extra" money (and to be truthful, the cheaper rates was why were were there in the first place).

They said the blood work would take a couple of days and someone would call me. It was a Wednesday, so I gave them until the Monday following before calling. It was the day of a big snowstorm here, and nobody answered the phones. I called again the next day and left a message with someone.

I called back a week later and left a message on their machine with two phone numbers where I could be reached. I called again when it was 2 weeks past and spoke to man who I left my numbers with and expressed angst that it had been so long. He promised me someone would call me back THAT DAY.

I called again Friday...two and a half weeks after the appointment...and explained to the woman who answered how long I had been waiting for a call, and that I would not be getting off the phone until someone came on and told me what the results were. She was super nice (thank you Mary!) and told me to hang on. 10 minutes later she came on to reassure me that I was not forgotten and she was still getting me someone. 10 more minutes and the vet came on.

The vet came on and told me that Pansy's blood work was ABNORMAL. Her kidneys "are not functioning right," and that's about as much as I could understand. Unfortunately this Dr. had a very thick Indian accent coupled with NO bedside manner, and it was so hard to understand what he was saying. I got that Pansy could get an X-ray with them but that an ultrasound would be better, and they don't have an u/s machine. I was and am SO FURIOUS at them for making me hunt down the results...I had assumed they must have been normal for them not to return my messages (3! messages).

My BFF Cecily was a vet tech for many years (many years ago now, but still), so I asked her if I could have the results faxed to her directly. She reviewed them and talked with her vet to make sure she was reading the numbers right, and called me back. My understanding is that Pansy is possibly in early renal failure, but that we can manage it with diet and medication and she can still live a long time.

Of course we go into panic and all sorts of worst-case scenarios, but we are trying to stay calm and take things one step at a time. The first step is to call tomorrow to get her an appointment at our local vet to review her blood work and decide if an ultrasound is an urgent necessity, or if we can try diet/medication and see if there is any change first. The one place I called that has an u/s machine and is supposed to be very affordable said the ultrasound costs $360.00, but that included their $40 consult with a doctor. I'm certain we won't find cheaper than that.

Keep her in your thoughts, will ya? xoxo

After successful swimming lessons and healthy checkups, three male otter pups are now on exhibit at Oakland Zoo. They were born to Ginger, river otter, on the morning of February 24, 2013 at Oakland Zoo. Each baby weighed approximately 0.3 pounds at birth or about 136 grams. They now weigh around 4.5 pounds. The pups are named Kohana (swift), Hinto (blue), and Shilah (brother).

We're at the local clinic for Aaron's latest round of vaccinations and shots.

I went to my primary care physician's office for a planned checkup. I was greeted by a smiling mascot... I was impressed by the perfect teeth and the happy toothy smile...

"If you can keep your head while all those around you are losing theirs and blaming it on you..." "You are a man, my son..." Or words to that effect...:)

Here it is:

"If..." by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you

Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,

But make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,

Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,

Or being hated, don't give way to hating,

And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;

If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster

And treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,

And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,

And lose, and start again at your beginnings

And never breathe a word about your loss;

If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew

To serve your turn long after they are gone,

And so hold on when there is nothing in you

Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,

Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,

If all men count with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,

And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

These days’ people are interested in getting dental insurance and it can include x-ray, dental checkups regular visits for cleaning of teeth and teeth whitening kit. The dental insurance plans are becoming very common because people want to maintain their dental health. The big firms provide their employer a chance to select dental insurance benefit plans for coming year. In other words, it is a good opportunity for you to utilize the benefits of dental plans and for taking care of the smile. By choosing such plans that will cover most of the dental issues can help to prevent diseases as well. For instance, you can avail the options of discounts plans which are cost effective.

The Holiday Rush Isn’t Only at the Store

If you have to stand in line on Black Friday and you end up wasting your precious time for getting the dental appointments at the last minute, it is not worth the effort. One can utilize the family dental plan which can be used for treating the dental diseases. Similarly, extended hours on Saturday and Sunday are another option. This way, you don’t have to wait to get treatment for dental problems. The dental procedures, for instance, root canals, dental implants, and dental bridges need more than one sitting to complete by your dentist. So, if you want to take good holiday pictures smiling confidently at the formal office functions, select the right dental insurance plan for yourself.

Winters expose the teeth to the dental issues like bridges and crowns, which may need restoration. The change in the temperature can make your teeth vulnerable and cause cracking of the protective layer of the teeth. It can cause serious issues, especially if they are not treated in time. The regular dental check-ups are the best way to address the prevailing dental issues. One can make the careful decision of choosing such insurance plan, which is not overpriced for you. You can also choose dental insurance plans by taking assistance from the help lines and also take appointments if you don’t want to talk on a phone.

The dental plans have provider networks; this means they have a network of dentists. And they allow you to pick dentist of your choice from the given options. The big dental insurances have a big network, and you have more options to select different plans depending upon your need. UDP is a Washington’s largest network consisting of 3,400 dentists and your coverage is not limited to the state, but you can avail it outside the state. In some cases, you are allowed to utilize the facility of non-network dentists by paying roughly ten percent more amount of money in addition, to money paid for the dental plan.

The dental health can get costly as you grow older. However, this dental coverage is likely to be appropriate for you and your family. Of course, it is your right to ask your employer if they offer you any dental coverage, but it is not mandatory. If the firm is not giving any plans for dental insurance, try to search online for the best plans to suit your needs by talking to the providers. Before picking any dental plan, learn about the policies and opt by making sure that the package includes all your visits to the dentist, because in some cases, it may increase the total cost.

When you are choosing any dental plan, it is significant to critically review the basics of the plan in addition to terms and conditions given by the provider of the network. The dental plan should cover all the services, rates, and every dental provider is different when it comes to small details. Therefore, it is necessary to review every aspect of your plan along with the coverage and payment options offered by the dentist and dental company, as it could help to save money. One can consult the dentists to get a rough estimate of annual expenditure on dental plans before picking any one option.

If you are thinking that you can get insurance plan according to your lifestyle, it is important to know that every plan has a probation period. So, you need to have a dental plan that is just not limited to dental emergencies. While purchasing the dental insurance, think about the waiting period to make the right choice. The waiting periods of dental insurance varies from, for example, one year if it is your first time. Though you can become insured, however, it may not include treatments like crowns or root canals, however, after a certain period of time, you can get insured. Hence, you can stop paying for any minor issues like dental filling.

The dental insurance companies know when you need a filling or a crown. But you will probably have to wait for 12 months, and then you can restore it afterward. If you are concerned about losing your tooth and suffer the discomfort, you can try home remedies. The best way to plan ahead for most people does save money on the dental expenses as compare to not planning. The brushing and flossing on daily basis are also better ways and you can use an inexpensive electric toothbrush in addition to getting professional cleanings every six months from your dentist. The high-quality dental plan can last for years. Therefore, it helps you in saving money for the future expenditure.

The dental insurance covers a certain percentage of all your dental expenses and you pay the small amount in form of a monthly fee. The dental insurance companies divide the dental plan into two parts including the dental care services and benefits. It includes both dental offices and dental insurance firms and you are expected to pay separate fees for both the services. This fee is used to ensure smooth transactions between the patient, doctor, and insurance company.

To conclude, one can say that in order to keep your smile intact, you can invest in dental plans for managing your dental issues in an effective manner. One can select those dental insurance plans which may cover a good range of dental issues. However, if you spend money on one plan, it could cost you a lot. Therefore, you can get the insurance of your family members as well. To put simply, the dental plans are useful for those who want to ensure the dental health before developing a serious dental condition.

My oldest girl, Jenna, got her first checkup today. She was SOOO funny. She was so excited to take her xrays. Dr. Claiborne mentioned that we wished that all her patients were that eager.

This photo is actually the result of four or five photos taken during two trips, over a three week period. I had thought it would be cool to purposely make a sign for an eye doctor intentionally blurred, just for the fun of it. But easier said than done. My first was too clear, and my second one so blurry that you couldn't even read it. This one... was JUST RIGHT!

Kikuchi Sensei!!

Giant panda #TianTian had a full preventative veterinary checkup yesterday. Veterinarians did not find anything abnormal, but he may be starting to show some changes that are normal for an older bear, like some weight loss and possible arthritis. He has lost some weight during the past several months, but his behavior and appetite are normal, and he weighs 260 pounds. In addition to the X-rays, blood sample and urine sample that veterinarians collected, they also performed an ultrasound to look at his abdomen and organs. They also performed acupuncture and laser therapy—both are complementary treatments. The acupuncture may help Tian Tian’s overall muscle tone, and the laser therapy may help some suspected arthritis in his left shoulder. If the panda team notices any more changes in Tian Tian during the next few months, this exam will give them a good reference point for comparison. Tian Tian recovered from the checkup and is back at the panda habitat. #PandaStory

After my dehydration syncope episode in Jerusalem a month ago, I was concerned enough to get a large blood test work done upon my return to Helsinki last week. Yesterday i had an appointment with my doctor to hear the results. All is well, thank goodness. I am a healthy person :-) She thought the problem was my low blood pressure.

"And so what do we learn from this?" she asked me with a big smile and answered: "Drink more water and eat more salty stuff !"

I wish all problems were as simple to solve.

A home energy checkup is a great way to save money on energy costs while improving the comfort and efficiency of your home. This simple action can help you reduce your energy usage and recommend home improvements and routines that can enhance your home and put money in your pocket.

In this photo set, Peter Waring from Healthier Dwelling did a full home energy assessment, checking our house for leaks. It appears we have a lot leaks, which will require us to seal our home, to reduce our overall energy consumption and carbon emissions. Stay tuned for more developments on this front.

This is just one of the climate actions we are taking this year, to make a green change in our lives: switching to 100% renewable electricity, getting an electric vehicle, biking more often, canceling long flights, converting gas appliances to electric and eating a plant-rich diet.

In just six months, we have reduced our carbon footprint by half, and we hope to reach zero emissions by the end of next year. This is just one of the ways we are trying to help solve the climate crisis. Besides taking action in our own lives, I have also started Green Change, our new climate action network in Marin, to help others go green with us.

What exactly is infertility?

The problems with either conceiving a child, or with carrying out the pregnancy to its eventual fruitful end, fall under the definition of infertility. Infertility is the incapability of an individual to become pregnant, in case of females, or the incapability to induce pregnancy, in case of the males. The inability of an individual to carry out a pregnancy to its full term is also dubbed infertility. How does one recognize infertility? What are the signs of infertility?

Signs of infertility are not always evident. Most people go through life without knowing there is a problem with their reproductive systems, attributing failed pregnancies to providence. In fact, miscarriages are the most common indicator of infertility. Signs of infertility in women:

In women, the signs of infertility are more readily recognized as compared to men. Endometriosis causes the lining of the uterus to grow outside the uterus.

Bacterial infections may begin around the uterus and spread to other reproductive organs, resulting in infertility. Fibroids in the uterus are indicative of infertility. Tumors in the cervix often cause stenosis, or narrowing of the cervix, which is a common indicator of infertility.

Ovulating before the tenth day and after the twentieth day of one's monthly cycle, pre-menstrual spotting, menopausal symptoms, etc. are indicative of luteal phase defect, and thus in turn are signs too.

Irregular menstrual cycles are the most common indication in females that they might have some problems with fertility. However, an irregular menstrual cycle is not conclusive in itself, but it is definitely one of the signs of infertility.

Issues regarding body weight are often indicators of being infertile. For a woman, being too thin, or anorexic, will definitely hinder pregnancy, since the body does not have the proper nutritional requirements, or the required strength.

Alternatively, obesity can also be a sign. Obesity is accompanied by hormonal imbalance, which affects the reproductive system and pregnancy. Signs of Infertility in Men:

Like females, in males too, either obesity, or anorexia, is an indication that he is infertile. Apart from these, anatomical defects may also be signs of infertility. Undescended testicles, or damage to scrotum and the gonads, are possible indicators too. Wearing tight undergarments, or exposing the testicles to heat, may render the person unable to produce the required number of sperms, or unable to produce sperms altogether, resulting in infertility.

Determining the signs of infertility:

There are many medical procedures for detecting the signs that help to determine whether an individual is infertile or not. Doctors usually prescribe one or more of the following medical tests:

. Hysterosalpingography. A dye injected into the vagina is monitored to check for blockage in the fallopian tubes or uterus.

. Laparoscopy. If disease and other physical problems are present in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or in the uterus, infertility is suggested. This may be detected through laparoscopy.

Infertility is a problem which can be solved if it is addressed in the holistic way, which is, using a multifaceted method of healing. Getting regular health checkups, taking supplements to combat existing problem, exercising and stress reduction techniques are only part of the holistic solution to infertility. The holistic approach is not only a surefire way to increase your chances of conception it also guarantees a safe and healthy pregnancy.

This article is based on the book, "Pregnancy Miracle" by Lisa Olson. Lisa is an author, researcher, nutritionist and health consultant who dedicated her life to creating the ultimate pregnancy solution guaranteed to permanently reverse the root of infertility, help you get pregnant quickly and naturally and dramatically improve the overall quality of your life, without the use prescription medication and without any surgical procedures. Close-up of little boy opening his mouth during dental checkup

We took him in for his two-year wellness check. He did great, and even had fun some fun with the doctor. And, praise God, the kid is healthy!

Why I'm Proud of This Photo

I always default to shooting in landscape, but there was too much in the frame that was a distraction. I like the vertical composition much more, and I was careful to make sure the lines from the window weren't too distorted.

Endoscopy training

We undertake its trainings both as an endoscopist and as a patient.
