My best friend's three month old son had to go to the hospital yesterday. His three month checkup revealed that his weight was far lower than it should be. They call it "failure to thrive" which is a pretty damn scary term.

Fortunately, he's doing great and it's really looking like it might just be that he needs to be taking formula in addition to being breastfed. They're taking no chances, of course, and running all sorts of tests and keeping close track of all intake and output to rule out anything else as a possible cause. Fingers crossed it's just that he needs more calories than he's been able to get from the breastfeeding so far, since that's easily fixed.

In any case, this all meant that he had to get an IV in the head. IN THE HEAD! Isn't that crazy? Apparently it's easier to do it that way for babies or something? Seems unpleasant, but it IS kind of badass. He'll certainly have a great story to tell his friends when he's older, about how he had to get a head IV when he was a baby.

Just remember that the next time you whine about getting a little old blood draw. At least you don't need a HEAD IV. ;-)

Reviews of costumer for full body checkup

I had my 6 month checkup with my oncologist this morning and as I pulled into the parking lot at his office there sat this nice looking classic Ford truck. (One classic lookin’ at another! Yeah, right Dave). When I went in I asked who it belonged to. But no one was sure. But I did get a few quick pictures of it. On the front it shows it has a V8 engine. I figured it’s probably no earlier than a 1932 model since 1932 is when Ford came out with its first V8. (Not the juice. It came out the following year).

But poised where he was, I’ll bet this “ole boy” was watching and checking out every vehicle that came through! I think he may have trembled some when I drove in with an F250 diesel. He sure was lookin’ green with envy though.

BTW, my doctor said that my labs came back with no sign of cancer whatsoever. Praise the Lord! The chemo is doing its job. But I know who’s really in charge! And it ain’t me!

Everyone have a wonderful day!

I go to the dentist once every 6 months. Its routine, plaque cleaning, cavity check, etc. This year I had to replace a broken tooth filling.

Smoki is protesting his Vet visit by sleeping in the doghouse on the deck every night and not coming inside. We have countered his protest by hiding the food dish so only Squeaky can get it. We will see who wins.

My boys are at their semi-annual dental checkup and cleaning. Mom is settling in, grabbing a magazine to read while I wait. (I'm so lucky they don't just carry the style and feel horrible about yourself lady magazines and actually carry intelligent content like Smithsonian and Kiwi.) Meanwhile my older son came across this bug book. Buzzing Insects was written by a Local Chicagoian Tom Greve. Its all about insects that sting (and don't).

We were reading the page about a Bee and a Horse "Mimic" Fly. This little boy who just finished his appointment, as is often the case with me and kids, he wandered across the room to see what we were chatting about. He loved hearing that the look-a-like bee was actually a mimic.

My older son proceeded to explain that his huge black eyes are different from a regular bee. Also the fly has 2-wings and a real bee has 4-wings (2-pairs). His mom stood nearby - as is also the frequent case - when the kids come to talk / listen to us. We love reading these books anywhere we find them because we always find a new tidbit inside for our storage bank of bug knowledge.

I Can See Clearly Now

September 29, 2009

by Yadira Galindo

At eight weeks old, our not-so-little panda cub now has both eyes open. According to our veterinary resident, Amanda White, DVM, his eyesight isn’t acute enough to see us plainly, but during today’s checkup I could see clearly that pandas rule.

When keeper Kathy Hawk walked in cradling the cub in his blue blankie, I couldn’t help but be all smiles. I’ve been at each of the previous four exams helping to document his progress for you to see and for our own work, of course! Each week he looks different – usually a little rounder – which makes me grin from ear to ear. The cub mesmerizes me, and, like today, I sometimes forget I should be writing down important data like his weight. He was a whopping 6.4 pounds (2.9 kilograms) today, which is an increase of less than one pound from last week, but it shows around his midsection, his face, his paws…really, it shows everywhere. He measured 19.68 inches (50 centimeters) long, but it’s his overall girth that seems to make him look gigantic compared to the previous veterinary exam. Maybe it’s all fur. Yeah, that’s what we’ll blame it on!

Today it was his eyes that kept catching my attention. Those sleepy, dark little eyes that looked at you but had a soft gaze. Amanda says he can see, as evidenced by his squinting at her light. Still, it will take a little more time for his eyesight to make out shapes and track movement. All I know is I couldn’t take my eyes off him, especially the two or three times he yawned, opening his mouth so wide I could almost see down his throat. No sign of teeth yet, just the pink gum line.

For the first couple of minutes he seemed sleepy, barely keeping those precious eyes open, and was yawning. He waved a little paw here and there as he was flipped around for a look at his underside or a paw. Halfway through the exam he seemed to have a lot more to say and began to grunt and make a few soft objections. The Panda Team tried to comfort him by massaging his back (they were really trying to feel his backbone, but he’s so robust, it’s almost like he doesn’t have one!). This usually relaxes him but not this day. He kept on protesting. Taking a cue from him, the team speeded up their exam. I looked up at a monitor to see what mom, Bai Yun, was doing, and she kept glancing at the den door. She was obviously hearing his little complaints but I think the bamboo was extra fresh and she kept eating, that is until the little guy felt the prick of his first vaccination and let out a big yelp.

I don’t know about everyone else in the room, but I held my breath and immediately looked over to see that Bai Yun had made her way to the den door, wanting to get in and check on the cub. It was the first of a series of vaccines and he’s quite fine. But when a panda says, “I’m done,” well, the exam is immediately concluded so that Bai Yun could comfort her little fellow. Clearly it’s the pandas that run these checkups. We’re just along for the ride.

What if you woke up one day and saw the world with blurry eyes? A diabetic could experience a medical condition called Diabetic Retinopathy. Of all the complications that diabetes may cause, this is the one that scares me the most. I had a thorough eye checkup, and thankfully, both my eyes turned out to be ok. I hope that they continue to stay healthy.

There is no cure for diabetes, yet, but until then, we will continue to see far and wide, and enjoy the many sights and sounds that this world has to offer...

I roll up my sleeve at my prenatal checkup for my regular high blood pressure analysis and also hold my breath a bit, being afraid that the analysis will certainly be raised after the shock that was seeing my weight on the scale. ‘ 110 over 60, looks wonderful!’ the clinical assistant reveals and I […]
