The purpose of this trip was to set up a temporary medical clinic in the rural village of Ekumfi Obidan in Ghana. These people did not have access to modern healthcare. Interestingly enough, Ghana has a fledgling government run universal healthcare system. One must purchase a card every year to be covered. The card costs around the equivalent of U.S. $7 per year, but many of these people still cannot afford that. Throughout our stay, we saw over 700 patients; a large percentage of whom were afflicted by malaria or parasitic worms.
Sperry Rail Service is an outside contractor that the railroads hire to check their rails for any flaws or defects that could cause any kind of a problem. Sperry Railcar #138 is working westbound (railroad orientation) through Park Ridge on 12-02-1976. At this point in time the NJ&NY Railroad has been passed on to the Erie,then the Erie Lackawanna,and then Conrail. Some points of interest in no particular order: View is looking north towards Montvale.Telephone booth still stands next to the boarded up windows of the depot and no crossing gates yet,just flasher signals.On the flagpole 3 flags fly,the American,the American Bicentennial,and below it maybe a POW flag. Bratt& Doxey has a carload of building materials sitting next to its unloading door.The siding track to the right of the Sperry Car served Quackenbush Lumber for many years where an unloading ramp allowed lumber to be taken off of rail cars.One or more of Park Ridge's fire trucks were delivered by rail here.Burroughs Corporation is on the left with a full parking lot of employee vehicles.The guy on the Sperry Car is photobombing before it existed.A 64 Ford Falcon? is in front of "Tale of the Hare" pet shop on Park Ave with the All Sport sport equiptment store to the right.A NJ Bell or NJ Telephone truck is in front of Cyclesport and a large residential building can be seen in the distance on Hawthorne Ave. A cream colored 1976 Olds Cutlass Supreme is parked on Broadway facing the photographer. We took Carl (from the movie UP) and enjoyed magical adventures with him on our most recent check-in to Walt Disney World. Here he is enjoying arriving to the resort and checking-in.
