More than at any other beach I've observed, the sand here clings to high tide water in pools, and slowly returns it to its source as the tide recedes. This toing and froing mainly occurs through six inch deep channels in the wet sand. As the moving water travels quickly through these channels, small waves are created and the surrounding sand moves causing the channels themselves to gradually move and reshape.

On our approach to Petermann Island, we sailed through the Lemaire Channel. It's majestic 600 foot basalt cliffs were covered in snow. The channel's smooth black water reflected the mountains and it was filled with growlers, bergy bits, and brash ice.
The mountains either side of the Lemaire Channel rise more than 800 metres above the water and easily dwarf a cruise ship
