We all enjoyed our drinks while standing on the bow, watching how the captain navigated us back through the Lemaire channel.

This is as close as I could get so I'm not sure what its current use is

Scorpion Canyon Campground, Channel Islands National Park

When one has achieved the age of 3/4 century, things take longer, and everything is heavier than it used to be, but apparently it does not inhibit curiosity.

Although I was not 75 years old until today, we had a family party on Easter Sunday, an Easter Birthday Party!

Todd and Lauren presented me with a new pond liner for the upper pond. The old one had outlasted its advertised lifespan by several years, and I had tried in vain several times to patch it.

As soon as a patch would seal a leak a new one would appear in another place (I suspect that the pond's popularity with hoofed wildlife may have contributed).

While moving away the hundreds of limestone rocks surrounding the old liner in order to install the new one, I exposed the underside of this rock that had resided in various locations around the grounds for as long as we've been here. It's local, having been picked up from the debris left after the sewer line was installed.

I have handled this rock many times, I'm sure, but this is the first time I can remember ever noticing the underside. I have always used it with the other side up. The presence of the channels and perforations set off my imagination. Did these channels appear before the stone was formed far beneath the ancient seabed, or were they carved through the stone by living roots long after the stone was formed?

I have read, while trying to satisfy my mind about the formation of flint in limestone, that it may have been cast in burrows of long-extinct sea animals.

I must assume, that at my age I'll probably never be completely satisfied with the answers of all the wonderful mysteries of this wide, wide world, but it's always my pleasure to wake up each morning with the knowledge that I'll probably learn something that I had never noticed before.

Sunrise over the Barwon Heads boating channel. The sun has flared a bit and destroyed all the highlights. I'll try again a bit earlier next time.
