The Pia Glacier is located in a fjord of the Beagle Channel and descends from the Darwin Mountain Range. It’s similar in area to Chile’s capital city, Santiago.

Burning sky over a water channel at a rocky shore along the Pacific. Standing in front of the scene, observing the waves and feeling the mist, experiencing this epic moment was much more fun than taking this shot. It was a priceless experience. To preserve the authenticity, very minor editing was made to the photo. What you see here is substantially what was in the sunset.

In the Battle of Britain, Hurricanes scored the highest number of RAF victories, accounting for 1,593 out of the 2,739 total claimed. By the beginning of 1941 German pilots had their measure. It did not do for a [Messerschmitt] Bf 109 to get into a dogfight with Hurricanes because the Hurricane could out-turn it, but the Bf 109 pilots’ “dive and zoom” tactics put Hurricane pilots at a severe disadvantage.
Yet those crucial months in 1939-40 were everything. Without the Hurricane, the Battle of Britain would have been lost. A total of 1,715 Hurricanes flew with Fighter Command during the period of the battle, far in excess of all other British fighters combined. Having entered service a year before the Spitfire, the Hurricane was “half a generation” older, and markedly inferior in terms of speed and climb. However, the Hurricane had proved itself a robust, manoeuvrable aircraft capable of surviving fearsome combat damage. Unlike the Spitfire, it was a wholly operational, go-anywhere, do-anything fighter by July 1940.
The crucial tactic in how Fighter Command approached the battle was exactly how to engage the massed formations of German aircraft. Hurricanes were generally directed at the bombers; they were a steady gun platform, and had a speed difference over Do 17 and He 111s that they did not have over Bf 109s. The Spitfires were directed at the German fighters.

The dial and on switch to an antique television set with a UHF channel positioned to channel 5. Everyone basically watched the same programs, listened to the same news broadcasts, and politically were less divided.

Rainbow lorikeets are true parrots, within the Psittacoidea superfamily in the order Psittaciformes. The rainbow lorikeet or lorikeet (common name) is a species of parrot found in Australia. It is common along the eastern seaboard, from northern Queensland to South Australia. Its habitat is rainforest, coastal bush and woodland areas. They are true parrots of medium-size, with the length ranging from 25 to 30 cm, including the tail. The weight varies from 75 to 157 g. The plumage of the nominate race, as with all subspecies, is very bright. The head is deep blue with a greenish-yellow nuchal collar, and the rest of the upper parts (wings, back and tail) are green. The chest is orange/yellow. The belly is deep blue, and the thighs and rump are green. In flight a yellow wing-bar contrasts clearly with the red underwing coverts.
Gordonia is a genus of flowering plants in the family Theaceae, related to Franklinia, Camellia and Stewartia. Of the roughly 40 species, all but two are native to southeast Asia in southern China, Taiwan and Indochina. They are evergreen trees, growing to 10–20 m tall. The bark is thick and deeply fissured. The leaves are alternately arranged, simple, serrated, thick, leathery, glossy, and 6–18 cm long. The flowers are large and conspicuous, 4–15 cm diameter, with 5 (occasionally 6-8) white petals; flowering is in late winter or early spring. The species are adapted to acidic soils, and do not grow well on chalk or other calcium-rich soils. They also have a high rainfall requirement and will not tolerate drought. 35143

I’ve never shot aerial photos of the salt marshes lining SF Bay this time of year; I prefer to wait ‘til later in the season when the waters turn magnificent hues of red and orange as the salt concentration increases. One nice (and unexpected) bonus of shooting the channels in April is the growth around the edges.
After an early morning passage of this famous and very scenic channel, suddenly the sun came out and the clouds disappeared. A magic moment...

Longdendale Trail, Peak District, Derbyshire
Longdendale Trail is an English long-distance trail which follows
the alignment of the former Woodhead railway line which used to run between Manchester and Sheffield (and closed east of Hadfield in 1981). It has shallow gradients and a smooth surface that makes it popular with families and cyclists.
There are 300 kilometers of rivers and streams in the Peak District National Park. According to locals, ghosts of Roman soldiers have been seen wandering the area – marching straight through hillsides – and there are regular sightings of flashing lights streaking up the valley.
