Gulls or seagulls are seabirds of the family Laridae in the suborder Lari. They are most closely related to the terns (family Sternidae) and only distantly related to auks, skimmers, and more distantly to the waders. Gulls are typically medium to large birds, usually grey or white, often with black markings on the head or wings. They typically have harsh wailing or squawking calls; stout, longish bills; and webbed feet. Most gulls are ground-nesting carnivores which take live food or scavenge opportunistically, particularly the Larus species. Live food often includes crabs and small fish. Gulls have unhinging jaws which allow them to consume large prey. Gulls are typically coastal or inland species, rarely venturing far out to sea, except for the kittiwakes. R_14542
I recently spent a few days roaming the North Cascades area. I sort of stumbled upon this meadow and it immediately found a spot on my list of places to return to. There are numerous snaking water channels which were a blast to shoot. I would love to get back up there in late fall before the snows close the road. I was hoping for some nice sunset color on those clouds, but soon after taking this shot the sun dipped into a large marine layer to the west.

This also wasn't what I had intended for the this weeks theme but when I saw this busker, as I walked on my way home from work to the station I thought he looked very cool . . . almost like Jimmy Hendrix only with slightly longer hair!
On a much sadder note this was also the very location where just a week later in Melbourne, a crazed driver deliberately charged at pedestrians with his vehicle terrifying Christmas crowds and workers and seriously injuring 19 people, a couple who are still fighting for life. He has since been charged with 19 counts of attempted murder. So sad and terrifying at anytime but especially at Christmas.
I don't want to end this post on a sad note and so I want to wish all of my wonderful Flickr friends and their families a wonderful and safe and happy Christmas and I look forward to catching up with all of you in the new year as I have limited internet access at the moment.

Burning sky over a water channel at a rocky shore along the Pacific. Standing in front of the scene, observing the waves and feeling the mist, experiencing this epic moment was much more fun than taking this shot. It was a priceless experience. To preserve the authenticity, very minor editing was made to the photo. What you see here is substantially what was in the sunset.

Beagle channel - Birds (Patagonia) 20240214
The islands in the Beagle Channel are home to Rock Shags (with black necks and red eye rings); Imperial Cormorants (white-necked and blue-eyed) that fly back and forth and towards the entrance of the channel; South American Terns and other birds.
In the Battle of Britain, Hurricanes scored the highest number of RAF victories, accounting for 1,593 out of the 2,739 total claimed. By the beginning of 1941 German pilots had their measure. It did not do for a [Messerschmitt] Bf 109 to get into a dogfight with Hurricanes because the Hurricane could out-turn it, but the Bf 109 pilots’ “dive and zoom” tactics put Hurricane pilots at a severe disadvantage.
Yet those crucial months in 1939-40 were everything. Without the Hurricane, the Battle of Britain would have been lost. A total of 1,715 Hurricanes flew with Fighter Command during the period of the battle, far in excess of all other British fighters combined. Having entered service a year before the Spitfire, the Hurricane was “half a generation” older, and markedly inferior in terms of speed and climb. However, the Hurricane had proved itself a robust, manoeuvrable aircraft capable of surviving fearsome combat damage. Unlike the Spitfire, it was a wholly operational, go-anywhere, do-anything fighter by July 1940.
The crucial tactic in how Fighter Command approached the battle was exactly how to engage the massed formations of German aircraft. Hurricanes were generally directed at the bombers; they were a steady gun platform, and had a speed difference over Do 17 and He 111s that they did not have over Bf 109s. The Spitfires were directed at the German fighters.

Saw the river otters a hundred yards or so from the ocean, at Abbott's Lagoon, Point Reyes National Seashore. Four of them swam through the narrow channel between the lagoons while I was there, and I was the only person around to see them. Two of the otters got out and posed for pictures on the little beach, apparently I don't look threatening to wild animals. Feb. 2018.
Floating down the river channel s a popular summer activity in Penticton BC between Okanagan and Skaha Lakes.

Alisterus is a genus of medium-sized Australasian parrots, comprising the Australian king parrot (Alisterus scapularis), the Papuan king parrot (A. chloropterus) and the Moluccan king parrot (A. amboinensis). The three species are respectively found in eastern Australia, Papua, the Moluccas and other Indonesian islands. Predominantly of red and green plumage, the long-tailed parrots are related to the genera Aprosmictus and Polytelis. The two subspecies of the Australian king parrot are similar except in size. The male has a red head and neck, red lower parts, blue back and rump, and green wings, each with a pale-green band (resembling a shoulder stripe). In the female, the head is green, the green being continuous over the neck, chest, and back. Red plumage covers the lower abdomen, and the pale-green wing band is small or absent. Juvenile males also have a green neck and head.
Magnolia champaca, known in English as champak, is a large evergreen tree in the family Magnoliaceae. It is known for its fragrant flowers, and its timber used in woodworking. The tree is native to the Indomalaya ecozone, consisting of South Asia, Southeast Asia−Indochina, and southern China. In its native range Magnolia champaca grows to 50 metres or taller. Its trunk can be up to 1.9 metres in diameter. The tree has a narrow umbelliform crown. It has strongly fragrant flowers in varying shades of cream to yellow-orange which bloom during June to September. R_46127

Tycho Wing the fourth (1794-1852) was Surveyor to the Duke of Bedford, and made a considerable name for himself, earning the nickname “King of the Fens”. Sometimes in the company of John Rennie and Thomas Telford, Tycho surveyed the Nene River outfall and surrounding marshes. The Nene River mouth is known as Tycho Wing's Channel, and the area on the east side of the river is Wingland, or Wingfield.
