In the last week or so, I've been hearing in the distance what sounded like a baby bird call, a call that I couldn't quite ID. In fact, some of the time I kind of wondered if I was hearing the cries of a particularly obnoxious human baby in a distant dwelling.
All became clear today when I heard the sounds much closer, and spotted the bird up in a nearby tree: a juvenile channel-billed cuckoo calling out for its host mum. I got a few photos of the juvie, then the rotten bird moved to a position where I couldn't see it. But I could still hear it. Calling incessantly. For what seemed like ages. I began to think that maybe its host parents had abandoned it (I would have!). Then the sound changed, and I dashed out onto the balcony in time to see the host parent (currawong or magpie ... I didn't manage to spot which it was) flying away with the juvie in hot pursuit.
