As part of the workshop segment regarding making connections about the impact of our choices, these volunteers had to stand barefoot on top of a milk crate for several minutes, to simulate the conditions that battery hens must endure.

This was our "Change the World" event...a "FREE GARAGE SALE!"

Attached are some pics of the event...it was so well received. We met lot a

really great people. We had twelve long tables that were "FULL" of items

donated by Church Members and friends...plus larger items in the middle of

the tables on the ground. People could not believe it was free...they tried

to give us money, but we told them this was our gift to the community, and

told them about the "Change the World" project. Most of the people that came

really benefitted from the project; you could tell they really needed the

items...we'll do this again. We even met some people that work construction

on the new ExxonMobil project in Hawkins that wanted to donate items to the

sale...we'll catch them on our next sale. BLESSINGS, BLESSINGS, BLESSINGS!

It was cold and windy, but a great day. We had two small boxes of items

leftover...which we took to Hawkins Helping Hand.

On May 7th around 30 people of all ages helped out in Glidden, Iowa (the

littlest helpers stayed at the park to pick up sticks and plant flowers in

pots to take around). Our church took the lead on the event this year,

though members of other churches (including the Presbyterian pastor), and

girl scout leader were involved with us in the planning. The children and

youth cleaned a lot of windows in the homes of elderly community members,

helped a 99 year old man plant his garden, cleaned flower beds and yards.

The adults cleaned gutters, cut down a bush that was blocking the main

entrance to a house, then replanted limited growth decorative bushes in its

place, fixed a set of crumbling porch stairs, and placed a grab bar to

assist a woman who had nothing to hang onto when opening her outside door.

After spending the morning working we had a meal for the volunteers and the

elderly people we had helped. The day was an amazing witness to the love of

Christ that exists in this community! Talk has already begun about next year

focusing on bathroom safety for the elderly.

Sinclair & Sinclair vs Sinclair - A new feature here in the pages of Art Young's Good Morning!

CAPTION: "The shops show the same standardized, nationally advertised wares; the newspapers of sections three thousand miles apart have the same “syndicated features”; the boy in Arkansas displays just such a flamboyant ready-made suit as is found on just such a boy in Delaware, both of them iterate the same slang phrases from the same sporting-pages, and if one of them is in college and the other is a barber, no one may surmise which is which." - Sinclair Lewis in his novel Main Street (1920)

The Daily Good Morning (To Laugh That We May Not Weep) - Sinclair & Sinclair vs Sinclair

We introduce today...

• Sinclair Lewis - Grand satirist, capitalism criticizer, novelist, short story writer and playwright - Nobel Prize for Literature winner, author of such acclaimed novels as Main Street, Babbitt, Arrowsmith, and the prophetic for our times, It Can't Happen Here.

• Upton Sinclair - Prolific novelist against capitalism, dedicated Socialist, muckraker for Appeal to Reason - the magazine known for publishing the writings of Eugene V. Debs & Mother Jones & Helen Keller, author of The Jungle, The Brass Check, Oil!, The Flivver King, and Pulitzer winner.

• Sinclair Broadcasting Group - The media company in the news for having news anchors in over one hundred stations read the exact same script about "real journalism" and "fake news".

These photos were taken during our Stop Hunger Now food packing day,

where members of St. Matthew's and the community packed 40,000 meals

in an effort to end world hunger. Working with Stop Hunger Now, an

international hunger-relief agency, St. Matthew’s members and

community volunteers directly impacted the lives of thousands for only

25 cents per meal. (The church raised $10,000 for Stop Hunger Now

during a special Lent offering.) Stop Hunger Now coordinates the

distribution of food and other lifesaving aid to children and families

in countries all over the world.
