Los flamencos mayores (Phoenicopterus) son un género de aves neognatas de la familia Phoenicopteridae. Son aves que se distribuyen tanto por el hemisferio occidental como por el hemisferio oriental: existen 2 especies en América y una en el Viejo Mundo. Can they turn their heads all the way around? Yes and no—it depends on the starting point. If an owl starts with its head in the forward position, it can easily rotate to look directly behind itself. If startled while in this position the owl can crank its head a bit further. (Some species can go a full 270 degrees from the front, but Great Horned Owls cannot.) Owls normally don't do more than look over their back under normal circumstances.
But if the owl starts with its head rotated to the back over one shoulder, it can easily turn its head back to the front and then to the back over the other shoulder. So yes, they can easily turn their heads all the way around if they start out facing backwards. This means the can see all the way around themselves without having to move their bodies at all.
On the flip side, their eyes are so large they cannot move them at all in their sockets like we can. So they NEED to be able to turn their heads farther. They accomplish this by having LONG necks (14 cervical vertebrae as opposed to 7 in humans). They just have long, fluffy neck feathers and keep their necks squished down into an "S" shape so it looks like they don't have much of a neck.
Every year breast and cervical cancers kill 625,000 women worldwide ~ that's the equivalent of SIX jumbo jets crashing EVERY DAY with no survivors. I wonder how long the world would put up with that....?

Los archibebes claros ( Tringa nebularia) son bastantes desconfiados , si además te descubren, chivatean tu posición con su reclamo de alarma inconfundible.
Este ejemplar recelaba, sospechaba de esa silueta en la orilla, pero al mismo tiempo tenía curiosidad, así que su estrategia fue sobrevolarme lo suficientemente cerca para poder mirar y lo suficientemente rápido para huir si hiciera falta.
Yo lo veía venir, así que arqueé la espalada todo lo que pude y lo esperé delante mía. Como el sol estaba ya bajo, la sombra de su cabeza se proyectó en su ala, no se por qué me llamó la atención este detalle.
Al posarse, ya a distancia, y comprobar que el bulto era más que sospechoso ( yo me había doblado para congelarlo) reclamó sin cesar y no cejó en su empeño hasta que no quedara ni un chorlitejo cerca.......tocaba esperar de nuevo, empezar de nuevo, pero la tarde me deparaba una agradable sorpresa que ya os mostraré.

Es una especie de ave piciforme de la familia Semnornithidae que habita en América del Sur.
Es un barbudo robusto, de tamaño medio con un peso entre 80 y 115 gramos. Son aves muy coloridas de una morfología inconfundible. Se caracterizan por tener un pico muy robusto con maxilar amarillo y mandíbula verde clara, ambos con puntas negras. Tiene corona, careta y un delgado collar cervical de color negro, plumas del occipucio largas y una conspicua raya post ocular de color blanco posterior al ojo.
L'inverno
Ma può mai arrivare un inverno così all'improvviso?
Sono scesa che parevo l'omino Michelin, un vento gelido che taglia la faccia e infiamma il trigemino e le cervicale, un senso di ansia ipocondriaca per malanni stagionali, ansia da Natale che fino a l'altro ieri chi ci pensava. Risultato un terribile malumore.
Però poi c'è un però.
L' inverno
I termosifoni accesi, il tepore della casa, la lampada accesa ed il divano e la copertina che non sembrano più sinonimo di vecchia e pigra ma un coccolarsi nella stagione fredda.
E anche il Natale, con le foto delle luminarie che mi manda la collega da Salerno, smette di essere solo ansia e diventa luce.
E ai malanni stagionali ci pensa la vaccinazione.

Rosi is our friends' cat. She suffers from an autoimmune disease and would scratch her wounds without a cervical collar. So it's not quite as funny as it looks.
But Rosi takes it with patience and calmness.
Solsona (1) es un municipio de Lleida, Cataluña; es la capital de la comarca del Solsonés, sede de obispado y Felipe II le concedido el título de ciudad (2), aunque, con poco más de 9.000 habitantes, a mí me parece que, tenga título o no, es un pueblo.
Este "Cap de biga" (3) (4) (cabeza de viga) me sorprendió particularmente, pero el conjunto de vigas que hay en Solsona es realmente peculiar y merece la pena forzar un poco las cervicales. Se encontraba en el carrer de Llobera (5), que es una calle de Solsona con un gran conjunto de edificios que, además, tienen un trazado que cierra la perspectiva, algo que a mi entender añade interés a la zona.

Finalmente, sabato pomeriggio, mi sono fatto lobotomizzare: quale lieta sensazione!
Temevo che l'intervento fosse lungo ed invasivo, mentre devo riconoscere onestamente che dura un istante, circa quanto un un colpo di lupara alla base del cranio, ed il dolore è tutto sommato molto discreto, fatta eccezione per quel male lancinante ed insopportabile che provo in zona cervicale ma il dottore mi ha detto trattarsi di semplice torcicollo.
Ora mi sento meglio, sono davvero un'altra persona infatti devo tornare all'anagrafe per rifare i documenti e sono stato convocato in questura per il riconoscimento. Il mio.
Ho l'agilità di un bradipo e l'acutezza di un dodo, insomma mi sento parzialmente estinto ma è solo una sensazione giacchè non compaio nella lista delle specie in via di estinzione. Ho controllato.
La cosa che mi ha colpito di più, a parte il colpo di lupara di cui v'ho già accennato, è stato notare quanto il mio modo di fare sia ora notevolmente più compassato d'un tempo, infatti le articolazioni delle gambe hanno acquistato rigidità e quando mi volto descrivo cerchi quasi perfetti. Migliorerò.
Mi sento più sereno, in armonia con ciò che mi circonda, quasi fossi parte integrante della natura. Sarà per via delle pareti della stanza che ho dipinto di grigio, tipico colore del cielo quando è nuvoloso, oppure a causa dei sessantadue orologi a cucù che ho acquistato e che ho sincronizzato su orari differenti così che potessero cantare ad ogni minuto del giorno. E della notte. Bizzarria ornitologica.
Quando Costantino mi fece notare che due cucù erano di troppo non me la presi affatto. Tanto non conosco nessuno che si chiami Costantino. Però ho provveduto a sopprimerne due scegliendoli accuratamente attraverso il meccanismo inesorabile della conta:

Si estás tumbado en la marisma esperando fotografiar pequeños limícolas cuando de repente aterriza un flamenco a 5 metros de tu posición, entonces, hacerle una foto al flamenco no es una misión sencilla.
La ventaja, la perspectiva tan baja hace que la fotografía sea mucho más atractiva. El inconveniente, tienes que arquearte y retorcer tus vértebras cervicales dentro de la red de camuflaje intentando fotografiar al flamenco de cuerpo entero

The advantage, the low perspective makes the photograph much more attractive. The disavantage, you have to arch and twist your cervical vertebrae inside the camouflage net trying to photograph the full-length flamingo.

so today i had my first cervical cancer jab. i'm not normally scared of needles but silly me decided to research the hpv vaccine and found out all the statistics of me dying or getting paralysed etc. so i was quite scared about having it. Also one of my best friends fainted after having hers, but i survived and the pain is slowly getting worse but oh well.
the teddy bear idea was hanna's (the girl who fainted) and the 'ouch' idea was my mums, she's pretty good at coming up with ideas for my 365s :') and the writing on the drawn out phone is the slogan/advert for the hpv jab for those of you who don't know :)
also i have nearly used up all my uploading space thing this month, cus silly me didn't know there was a limit!
Ejemplar de Carraleja o aceitera hembra ( Physomeloe corallifer)
Captura realizada el día 20 de Abril del 2018 en el paraje Kárstico de las Tuerces, Palencia.
Le acompaño de alguna curiosidad de la especie:
Se trata de un endemismo ibérico, es decir, sólo habita en España y Portugal. Se encuentra con frecuencia en las dos vertientes del Sistema Central, y en todo el valle del Duero. Más abundante por la zona centro. Parece que también ha sido registrado de manera esporádica en localidades del sur y el este de la Península-
Como otras especies de géneros próximos (Meloe, Berberomeloe,…) es conocida popularmente como carraleja y como aceitera. Tiene los élitros cortos, que solo cubren un tercio del abdomen. También tiene por los cuatro puntos de color rojo coral que adornan su escudo cervical (pronoto). A estos puntos debe su nombre específico, corallifer, que significa "que lleva coral". Son marcas de tipo aposemático, para advertir a posibles depredadores del peligro de consumirlos. Como en la mayoría de los insectos, las hembras son más grandes que los machos, midiendo hasta unos 3 centímetros.
Es más activa y fácil de ver a lo largo del mes de abril, del mismo modo que su pariente Berberomeloe majalis.
Como otros miembros de la familia Meloidae, si se molestan segregan una sustancia verdosa y aceitosa, que contiene cantaridina, muy irritante para la piel y que provoca llagas dolorosas. Si afecta a los ojos produce conjuntivitis.

For years we have encouraged woman to check their breasts, to check for lumps, to get mammograms, to go for cervical smears, for years we had to break the taboo!! I have ran so many races to raise awareness and money, but now all screening everything we fought for has been cancelled indefinitely!!
If we stay at home we will flatten the curve and this in turn supports each other and every woman, we can all get through this Pandemic and then we start cancer screening again. If we don't do as our governments and hospitals ask then someone you love, your wife, your mum, your daughter, your sister, your best friend won't get screened and next year we face a cancer epidemic instead!!
My mammogram was cancelled last week indefinitely. I have a small titanium plate in my right breast, I had a small tumour removed last January, I won't get my mammogram now, I won't know if its grown back, I won't know for months, how many woman right now don't know they have a tumour and need a mammogram, the art of surviving is catching it early.
So PLEASE PLEASE stay at home, support our #NHS so they can support us

Which is exactly what I didn't want.
Such a remedy is usually found by just getting close, telling one in a stern voice "just don't move" and taking the picture before the spell can be broken.
Worked like a charm.
People tend to respond, Pavlov-like, to simple authoritative commands. No matter how much they're griping, dropping the voice an octave and barking at them gives you at least a few seconds of exactly what you want.
Having a super crazy camera in hand don't hurt none, either. Polaroid = Mind Control Power.
