Giraffes, despite having such humongous necks, actually have the same number of neck vertebrae as a human. There are only seven vertebrae in mammal necks, meaning that the giraffe has vertebrae that are nearly a foot long each! Their cervical (neck) vertebrae have actually just extended in length, instead of adding more bones into the anatomy. This elongation is responsible for the neck becoming so long.

.. is an amazing thing. Very flexible in many directions! In comparison, the mobility of our cervical spine is rather poor...

Unfortunately, I have got problems with my cervical spine (blockade)-caused by a fall when skiing..Thanks to a good Physiotherapist I feel better meanwhile. But sitting for a longer period in front of my PC is strictly forbidden...

I will catch up as soon as possible. Thank you for understanding.

See you soon and thank you for your friendship :-)

Primate DNA is only five percent different from ours. Like us, they feel jealousy, envy, love, shame, grief, depression... They are very social beings, they are sensitive and each one has a different personality, according to the experts, as happens in humans. They develop tools for specific purposes, which involves reasoning, anticipating the future and acting with the tool. They adopt orphans, which demonstrates social bonds, empathy and altruism. They have self-awareness, cooperative problem-solving and learning by example and experience, so they have symbolic capacity and a culture of their own, which they pass on from one generation to the next. Chimpanzees even surpass humans in certain memory tasks. An ape at the age of two is able to do small sums and use tools, while a two year old does not even know how to do sums or reason the why of the tool. They give pets to their children and they even learn words in sign language, being able to establish a conversation with their caregiver. They are able to teach their offspring sign language so that they can communicate with their caregivers. And so on. And they share a very important trait with humans, a trait not found in any other animal... laughter.

This image is dedicated to Bobby. Bobby was a chimpanzee used for decades as a laboratory animal at the Coulston Foundation in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He was born in captivity and at a very young age participated in biomedical experiments. By the age of 19, he had been anaesthetised more than 250 times and biopsied as many times. His life was spent in solitude inside a tiny metal cage. His body was bruised and scarred. In a deeply depressed state, he was incessantly self-harming, a clear sign that he intended to end his life. In 2002 he was transferred to Save the Chimps, a chimpanzee sanctuary in Louisiana, USA. Dedicated to Jeannie. Jeannie was in the service of science for nine years. At the age of six, she began her career in the pharmaceutical laboratories of Merck, Sharpe and Dohme. Shortly afterwards she was donated to the Buckshire Corporation and ended up at LEMSIP, Laboratory for Experimental Medicine and Surgery in Primates in New York at the age of 22. During that time she participated in several invasive experimental protocols including repeated vaginal douching, multiple cervical, liver and lymph node biopsies. She was infected with HIV and hepatitis C, and participated in rhinovirus vaccination protocols. She was anaesthetised more than 200 times. She died at the age of 31 at the Fauna Foundation, Canada's only primate sanctuary. Dedicated to Newt. Newt was born in 1979 at LEMSIP. At the age of four months he was sold to the Southwest National Primate Research Center in San Antonio, Texas. Newt was HIV-positive and was widely exposed to hepatitis B virus. Before he was four years old, he began intermittently self-harming. In 2003 he had his canines removed. Newt's clinical reports indicated that he had bites and lacerations on his hands, fingers, thighs, arms, legs, wrists and scrotum. A psychiatric report determined that Newt was in a profound state of insanity and derangement. He was attempting to commit suicide and end his life. This image is dedicated to all primates who have suffered psychological and physical torture, deprivation of liberty, abominable experiments and death in scientific laboratories, pharmaceutical, automobile, cosmetic, aeronautical, aerospace multinationals... and dedicated especially to Bobby, Jeannie and Newt.

We are the prehistory that will have the future. We are the remote annals of man. These years are the past of the sky. These years are a certain agility with which the sun draws you into the future. They are the truth or the end, they are god. We are left, those who can smile in the midst of death, in full light.

PS: When I look into the eyes of an ape, all I see in them is sadness and eyes that ask me, why, why? And I can only lower my gaze to the ground, while I shed some tears and feel a deep shame... shame of being human... a "Homo stupidus".

Covão d'Ametade is one of the most beautiful places in the Serra da Estrela, it is a circular area, in the shape of an amphitheater, surrounded by granite slopes, very abrupt, monumental and overwhelming, reducing our smallness and at the bottom of which a accumulation of sediments, which make possible the development of tree vegetation.

Once a cervical pasture, today it represents a depression of glacial origin that was wooded over time with birches on the banks of the river Zêzere. It is a paradisiacal scenario.

It is in Covão d'Ametade that the river Zêzere takes shape, in the small plain originating in glacial sediments. It is a very attractive area due to the surrounding vegetation mostly composed of birch trees, a plant that has the particularity of creating an ecosystem with a great biodiversity. Although the place is close to 1500 meters of altitude, it is just not accessible on the coldest winter days. This place is sought after by winter and mountain sportsmen who choose to start their hikes and climbs along the caves and rock formations that end up next to the Cântaro Magro in this area. There are three Cântaros that rise around Covão d´Ametade: the Cântaro Raso, further south; the Cântaro Magro, central and emblematic of the entire Serra da Estrela; and Cântaro Gordo, to the north.

Phoenicopterus

Taken within the Mabula Game Reserve, Ouklip, Limpopo Province, South Africa.

Number of Vertebrae:

Despite their long necks, giraffes have the same number of cervical vertebrae as humans—seven. However, each vertebra is elongated, measuring about 25 centimeters long, contributing to their impressive height.

Weight and Support:

A giraffe's neck can weigh around 270 kilograms (600 pounds), supported by a robust skeletal structure and powerful neck muscles that help manage its balance and movement.

Giraffes can safely eat from spikey bushes like acacia trees due to their long, flexible tongues and thick saliva. These adaptations allow giraffes to strip leaves from spiky branches without causing harm to their mouths.

The tongue's prehensile nature enables them to hold leaves securely, while the saliva helps lubricate the spines, making it easier to swallow. This unique feeding behaviour is a key adaptation that allows giraffes to thrive in their natural habitat.

Reticulated giraffes can reach a height of up to 560 cm, a shoulder height of up to 330 cm and a weight of up to 900 kg.

Despite their extremely long neck, giraffes have only seven cervical vertebrae.

The small "horns" on the head of the giraffes are also striking. These are bone cones that are covered with skin. Male giraffes use these horns in intraspecific fights, which is why the upper edge of these bone cones is mostly rubbed bare.

Female giraffes, on the other hand, have dark tufts of hair on these horns.

At the end of the visit to this beautiful church (slightly larger than a chapel) where every square inch of the walls is beautifully frescoed.

Tired of standing up for an hour and with cervical arthrosis put to the test by the photos on the ceiling, that armchair suggested to me for a moment the idea of a comfortable break.

I just took this picture.

😔 I write this with a heavy heart. The last couple of years have found me with a progressively degrading spinal column (4 hernias spread across my cervical, dorsal and lumbar regions) as well as hip and shoulder joint problems. I am to the point where I can no longer work and even photography is painful... although I still try.

If it were just me, I would never ask, but I have 2 young daughters that look to me for support, so I have to swallow my pride... If you are in a position to help, I have setup an account to accept donations, even as little as $5. Anything would be greatly appreciated. See my "About" page on Flickr for the link.

Thank you. (╥﹏╥)

°°°°°°°°°°°°

Hunting mainly by ambush, it feeds primarily on small mammals (shrews, voles), small birds caught in flight, as well as insects, amphibians, and reptiles. It has the particular habit of storing food in its nest. It is quite aggressive and territorial, and adult birds avoid encountering each other.

The pygmy owl can turn its head very flexibly thanks to 14 cervical vertebrae, twice as many as humans, giving it exceptional observational ability.

A re-process of an old photo, given I haven't uploaded anything in something like a month. I've been caught in the middle of exam period so bear with me! My final exam is advanced cranial and cervical anatomy on the 20th of November, after which I'm freeeeeeeeeee! Summer, here I come!

He must have just caught it, cause it was still alive. He would normally sever the cervical spine using his tomial tooth, but I guess he hadn't got .around to it yet. Light was a bit challenging, but was actually lucky to get the eyes in the light. Bg is pacific ocean.
