Union Station in San Diego, California, is a train station built by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway to replace the existing Victorian-style structure erected in 1887 for the California Southern Railroad Company. The Santa Fe Depot (as it was originally designated) officially opened on March 8, 1915, to accommodate visitors to the Panama-California Exposition. The depot was completed during a particularly optimistic period in the City's development, and represents the battle waged by the City of San Diego to become the West Coast terminus of the Santa Fe Railway systemâs transcontinental railroad, a fight that was ultimately lost to the City of Los Angeles.
In its heyday, the facility not only handled Santa Fe traffic but also that of the San Diego and Arizona Railway (SD&A) and San Diego Electric Railway (SDERy). The designation was officially changed to San Diego Union Station in response to the SD&A's completion of its own transcontinental line in December 1919. The Santa Fe resumed solo operation of the station in January, 1951 when the San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway (successor to the SD&A) discontinued passenger service, the SDERy having ceased operation some two years prior.
The historic Santa Fe Depot is located in Centre City (downtown) San Diego and is still an active transportation center, providing services to Amtrak, the San Diego Coaster, the San Diego Trolley, and the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System bus system. It was the ninth-busiest station in the Amtrak system in FY 2007.[
Originally used to prevent moisture and humidity from penetrating building facades, these tiles are now a common ornamental element of architecture in both small villages and cities around the country.
These are examples of older tiles with interesting and colorful repeat patterns.
The Plaza de Espana was built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition. Around the semi-circular plaza are a series of painted ceramic tiled benches representing each of Spain's 58 provinces. This one is for Salamanca.

A panel in the Gateway Murals. These are described in the City of Chicago Website as:
âChicago's largest work of public art to date, Riverwalk Gateway by Ellen Lanyon tells the history of Chicago and its river. The magnificent 336-foot long wall installation consists of sixteen narrative panels and twelve decorative panels. Each panel is six-feet by nine-feet, overglaze painted and fired on ceramic tile. The narratives, which are told through a combination of scenes, vignettes, and objects, begin in 1673 with the explorations of Marquette and Joliet, followed by a mural with scenes from 1782 of Jean Baptiste DuSable and 1803 when Fort Dearborn was built. Paintings record the development of Chicago's bridges and commemorate landmark events and important sites along the river and the lake, concluding in 2000 with the recreational use of the Chicago River.â
This panel depicts the improvements made along the river to support commerce in the mid 1800's onward. The improvements included bridges, wharves, and the LaSalle Street tunnel under the river.

The terra cotta block (front) is similar to some decorative elements found in Country Club Plaza. The terra cotta block in the rear was taken from a demolished building and is similar to the terra cotta that remains on 3939 Main Street. These were being sold in an architectural salvage store in Kansas City.

This panel commemorates the completion of the Illinois & Michigan Canal in 1848. The canal joined the Chicago River with the Illinois River thus providing a direct link between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes. The canal helped make Chicago a key transportation and trade center in the Midwest.
