Caltagirone liegt an der Strecke Catania - Gela im Gebiet der Monti Erei und die Stadt, die bekannt ist für ihre Keramikwerkstätten, zieht sich malerisch über drei Hügel. Die Herstellung bunter Majoliken geht in Caltagirone auf die arabische Zeit zurück und ist heute noch der wichtigste Wirtschaftszweig.
Vorwiegend wird Keramik mit traditionellen Formen und Mustern hergestellt, aber an einem Haus in der Neustadt bekommt man auch ganz modern gestaltete Kacheln zu Gesicht.
Built in the 1890's, this church is decorated with colourful ceramic tiles from the Zsolnay factory. It was built by Samu Pecz in a neo-gothic style.

Pack of three leaf tiles, two grape and one Geranium, mixed colors of red, green and yellow. These were pressed from the leaves of my grape and geranium plants for first firing, then hand applied high fire glazes before re-firing.

Das kleine Palazzolo Acreide besitzt die schönsten Stadtpläne und Wegweiser weit und breit.
Palazzolo Acreide liegt am Rand der Monti Iblei etwa 40 km westlich von Syrakus, zu dessen Provinz es gehört. Die Stadt geht auf das antike Akrai zurück, das von Griechen von Syrakus aus 664 v. Chr. gegründet und von den Sarazenen im 9. Jh. n. Chr. zerstört wurde. Im 12. Jh. wurde eine Burg gebaut, um die sich später eine neue Ortschaft entwickelte.
1693 zerstörte ein schweres Erdbeben neben Catania auch Palazzolo Acreide und mehrere Städte und Ortschaften im Val di Noto und forderte viele Menschenleben. Danach wurde Palazzolo Acreide im spätbarocken Stil vorwiegend aus dem hellen Kalktuff der Umgebung wieder aufgebaut und gehört heute zusammen mit den damals ebenfalls zerstörten Städten im Val di Noto zum UNESCO-Welterbe.
Auf einem Hügel südwestlich der heutigen Stadt befindet sich das Ausgrabungsgelände des antiken Akrai mit dem Teatro Greco, den Steinbrüchen Intagliata und einer hellenistischen Nekropole.

Die im 16. Jh. erbaute Kirche der Rosenkranzmadonna wurde zusammen mit dem benachbarten Dominikanerkloster beim Erdbeben von 1693 zersört. Die Kirche wurde danach in sehr einfachem Stil wieder erbaut und fällt durch das farbige Kachelmuster ihres Glockenturms auf.
Das heutige Aussehen der Stadt Ragusa wurde nach dem verheerenden Erdbeben von 1693 bestimmt. Die Oberstadt, Ragusa Alta oder Ragusa Sopra genannt, in der vor allem der Landadel wohnte, entstand nach den Kriterien barocker Stadtplanung, während die Unterstadt, Ragusa-Ibla genannt, zwar ebenfalls im Barockstil wieder aufgebaut wurde, jedoch folgte man hier dem mittelalterlichen Straßenraster. Ragusa-Ibla hat daher bis heute mit seinem Gewirr von verwinkelten Gassen und Treppen einen völlig anderen Charakter als die Oberstadt.
Auch in heutiger Zeit besteht bei den Einwohnern noch eine enge Bindung zwischen der Stadt und dem landwirtschaftlich genutzten Umland, die auf die bäuerlichen Traditionen und die im 15. Jh. eingeführte Erbpacht zurückgeht. Hieraus entstand über die Jahrhunderte eine homogene Kultur und ein sehr starkes Identitätsdenken der Ragusaner, so dass die Stadt mit ihrer Provinz oft als Insel innerhalb der Insel bezeichnet wird.

"Two special features grace the rim of the Great Lobby...the marble and iron staircase and the original Lodge elevator, an art deco masterpiece. The interior of the elevator walls are walnut with quarter sawn, face matched grain and marquetry panels...an inlay using vari-colored woods. This is the only known surviving, period art deco elevator still in use."
