After the finger grooving, I join my 8 fingers sideby side and push the clay from the top center to the bottom. At the bottom, near the bat, my finger tips are used like knives to cut the clay off the bat. I may have to rewet, regroove, and resmooth a few times until I get the shape I want. I try to keep as much of my hand in contact with the clay at all times. This takes much less stregnth than pushing the clay from the top and sides.

More in an occasional series* of "Stuff in my house". This time a little ceramic zebra, also brought back from somewhere exotic by my parents.

Vintage ceramic tea birdhouse, made in Japan, originally probably a little toothpick holder and repurposed by me as a planter for my "Vintage Planter Series".
I designed and hand stitched this felt plant especially for this little birdhouse, with 4 leaves and a flower, and I needle felted some undyed merino roving wool for the soil.

This little ceramic birdhouse was made and hand painted in Japan, probably in the 30s.
Its motifs of vines and birds are truly adorable and unique, I haven't seen another one quite like it.
These “novelty” ceramics were wildly popular and made mainly for the US market.
I have curated a small collection of such items to create my "Vintage Planter series - Ceramic & toys".
