Sligos Cemetary on the Pawnee National Grasslands. This is an old cemetary used by those coming west across the plains, and is full of mostly children. The overcast sky and storms made the perfect backdrop for the gateway entrance.
Good news! You can now find me on SmugMug !
Not my best lighting :) oh well.
Some of the earliest settlers and pioneers in Illinois are buried here. They were moved from various places around the village of Kaskaskia to this nice river bluff spot in the late 1800s. There was flooding that caused the Mississippi River to change course, pouring into the Kaskaskia river channel. The village of Kaskaskia (the first capital of Illinois) was slowly wiped out due to the river change, but the old cemetaries were moved here before that occurred. Strangely, there is now a chunk of the state of Illinois that is across the river on the Missouri side.
In Newington cemetary I came across this wreck, along with other vans,trailers...some actually on graves !! unbelievable

A personal favorite of mine. Amazing how nice a picture can come out when you are using your camera properly.
this cemetary was so peaceful to ride through...hot summer breeze blowing through the huge trees, casting shadows on gravestones hundreds of years old
This building was located in the Frankfort Cemetary and had ornate columns and lattice work. There were pews inside, so I assume it is a chapel for services.
I find it ironic that many cemetaries are very beautiful, with many flowers and trees, when after all, after you have passed this earth, you have no use for them.....I guess the beauty is for the living that come to visit their loved ones.
Cemetary for veterans, Hamilton, Ontario.
All that's missing is somebody doing something in the bottom left corner-ish...
Some more pics of Maple Hill Cemetary. I wish I cold spend more time there. Im sure there are stories unheard.
