( Amongst the top French cellists, to me personally, Tortelier ranks lowest, and then comes Fournier, albeit I had spent most time on the latter. I prefer Maurice Gendron and Navarro. All four of them taught at Paris Conservatory at roughly about the same period.)

* Annie Fischer was the idol of, amongst many others, Richter. She compares favourably in many respects even with Horowitz, not to mention Richter. Likewise, Ghena Dimitrova compares favourably with Caballe:

A Cellist’s Cello, Poem by Katherine Scogin

“Her soft expressions forever changing,

As the leaves of autumn do.

A sweet voice forever crooning,

Under a favorable moon.

Smooth, polished, delicate to my taste,

Her soul confident of the notes that shall be found.

Enjoy her splendor this nightly morn,

For when dawn arrives,

This sainted music may have gone.”

I set out to shoot a still life with lots of 'props' and ideas ... but so often I wind up shooting the little throw-away scraps that I just can't quite consign to the bin ... yet!

I do it so often that I've named the folders I shoot this way as "Odds and Sods". Finally I've decided to celebrate my "Odds and Sods" and post rather more of them than I usually do!

This is one from my latest O&S folder ... and the way the feather caught in the petals of the hydrangea made me think of a cello player.

Then I heard about an event on Monday .... and as we were celebrating 4 weeks since our first vaccine, it struck a chord. Do watch it - I think you will enjoy it ...

Tribute to cellist and composer Pau Casals, sculptor Josep Viladomat (1940)

ENGLISH

The idea of placing a monument dedicated to the musician arose with the arrival of democracy in Spain, when the mayor of Barcelona Josep Maria Socías i Humbert decided to return the name of the avenue dedicated in 1934 to the cellist and composer to its original name , since during the Franco dictatorship it had been renamed Avinguda del General Goded.

(My translation)

“The Cello is like a beautiful woman who has not grown older, but younger with time, more slender, more supple, more graceful.” -Pablo Casals (Cellist)

“To the whole world you might be just one person, but to one person you might just be the whole world.” - Pablo Casals

This is, by far, my favorite downtown, Houston sculpture. “The Virtuoso” created by David Adickes includes the disembodied hands and head of a cellist. The sculpture is located outside the Lyric Center on the eastern corner of Smith and Prairie streets adjacent to the Theater District.
