In the constellation Cepheus lies the open cluster IC1396, surrounded by an emission nebula that is part of a large system of HII molecular clouds. The dark nebula vdB 142, known as the Elephant's Trunk, stands out.

I combined images taken with different filters and tried merging them. I found the result pleasing and the information more complete than the individual images. 10-minute exposures were taken for each filter: 114 with the broadband SV260 filter, 61 with the dualband Antlia ALP-T 5nm (Ha and O3), and 16 with the dualband L-Synergy Optolong 7nm (S2 and O3).

To capture the stars, about an hour of integration was added in 60-second exposures with the broadband SV260 filter.

The whole thing was captured with a 150/600 Newtonian telescope equipped with a Tecnosky 0.95x corrector, a Tecnosky Vision 571C camera and an EQ6-R Pro mount, processed in PixInsight.

The spiral galaxy NGC 6946, located on the border between Cygnus and Cepheus constellation, is one of the closest neighbours of the Local Group, being its distance from the Milky Way only 18 million light years.

Due to its small inclination with respect to our point of view, it shows a detailed view of many active HII regions inside its spiral arms.

This galaxy is also known as “Fireworks Galaxy” due to the several supernova exploded in the latest 100 years (10 supernova from 1917 to 2017)

I was hoping for something more from this image, but in this circumstance I think I have really reached the instrumental limits and my elaborate limits.

The little reflection nebula, called "Iris" (NGC7023) of blue-cyan color is certainly an easy-to-photograph object, but my real interest was the interesting molecular clouds that surround it along with the obscure ones like the VdB141 called "Ghost Nebula "and that would be part of the Cepheus Molecular Cloud Complex .

I knew these molecular clouds, poorly lit and dark nature were difficult to photograph, but I expected on an integration of 6h 25min acquired in 3 consecutive nights.

Unfortunately this was not enough because two critical parameters have ruined the majority of frames: the temperature of the sensor directly affected by the ambient temperature and the poor transparency of the sky. The average nighttime ambient temperature was around 18-19 ° C and therefore the sensor temperature around 26 ° C. Too much thermal noise (you can see here single raw frame ) that cleared the little signal of molecular clouds. The unobtrusive transparency of the sky has adversely affected to a lesser extent; in fact it has made the bright sky caused by the light pollution coming from nearby cities

To highlight the molecular clouds, it is necessary to act with many successive strechs which in this case have highlighted the noise above. I had to find a compromise, making the image softer.

Forced processing also highlighted the vignetting even if treated with the flat; so I had to cut 10% on both sides of the image.

I hope this sharing can help amateur astronomers friends how to compare and make the best choices based on their setup and other external parameters.

Image of the nebulae of NGC 7822 above and Ced 214 below in the constellation Cepheus, it is a zone of ionized hydrogen emissions where you can see formations of the Pillars of Creation type, places where stars are formed.

The combination of the two nebulae appears to form the skull of an ancient primate, perhaps a Pythecanthropic with its prominent eyebrows, large eye sockets, and outstretched jaw.

The image was taken on September 10 in Cabañeros with a modified Canon 6D camera on a WO 91 Fluorestar telescope at ISO 3200 and about 3 and a half hours of shots, the image is a test of the telescope without a flattener and without a reducer / flattener (still I have not received the necessary material), but I did not want to wait to test the new toy, the typical star deformations of the refractors are observed on the edges.

Flats, darks and bias were not used.

IC 1396 is a very scattered open cluster associated with a large diffuse nebula, visible in the boreal constellation of Cepheus; it is located in a stretch of the Milky Way partially obscured by dense banks of dark nebulae, in a galactic region rich in dust and gas with associated young and hot stars.

The nebula has a roughly circular appearance: the combination of telescope and sensor used to take this image did not allow it to be taken in full, but in the image you can guess its circular shape.

The whole nebula is crossed by numerous dark spots, which on closer analysis turn out to be Bok globules, that is particularly concentrated regions of the nebula where the formation of new stars takes place.

It is therefore an H II region, and is part of a vast system of molecular clouds and OB associations called the Cepheus Cloud Complex.

A particular dark nebula that overlaps the object is also called Elephant's Trunk and is identified with the initials vdb 142.

The whole nebula complex is about 3000 light-years from the Sun.

The Ghost Nebula (designated Sh2-136, VdB 141 or IC 63) is a reflection nebula located in the constellation Cepheus.

It lies near the cluster NGC 7023. Looking at the adjacent image, the nebula's name is easily understood. The Ghost nebula is referred to as a globule (cataloged CB230) and over 2 light-years across. There are several stars embedded, whose emissions make the nebula shine in brownish colour.

@wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_Nebula

In this image, taken on the evening of August 22nd from Colle della Forchetta - Chiaves (TO), the Bubble Nebula (cataloged as Caldwell 11, NGC 7635) is visible in the upper right, and to the left is part of SH2-157 - The Lobster Claw Nebula, also known as the Lobster Nebula. The small nebula Sh2-159 is also visible in the lower right of the image.

Target Information

These nebulae are in the constellation of Cassiopeia, bordering the constellation of Cepheus. They are emission nebulae: they are H II regions clearly visible in the Hα band, where the emission is due to the ionization of hydrogen by ultraviolet radiation emitted by young, hot stars.

Note: Hα and H II are not the same thing. It's easy to confuse them because they both involve hydrogen.

The fundamental difference is this:

• H I = neutral hydrogen, meaning the atom still has its electron.

• H II = ionized hydrogen, meaning it has lost its electron → only the proton remains.

• Hα (H-alpha) = a specific hydrogen emission line, with a wavelength of approximately 656.3 nm, in the red part of the spectrum.

When a very hot, young, and massive star emits UV radiation, it ionizes H I, which changes to H II; that is, the hydrogen loses its electron and becomes H II.

Then, when a free electron is recaptured by a proton, it can pass through different energy levels. During one of these transitions, an Hα photon is emitted and recombination occurs:

H II + electron → recombination → Hα emission → red light at 656.3 nm

So: - H II describes the state of hydrogen (ionized).

- Hα describes the light emitted by hydrogen during a particular atomic transition.

The phrase: "This is an H II region, clearly visible in the Hα band." therefore indicates that the nebula is a region of ionized hydrogen and that its emission is particularly evident when observed in the Hα emission line.

The Bubble Nebula NGC 7635 (sometimes known as C 11) is a diffuse nebula whose main feature is a "bubble" of vacuum surrounded by the nebula, caused by the stellar wind from the young central star, at magnitude 8.7. It was first identified by William Herschel in 1787 and, due to its circular shape, was long mistaken for a planetary nebula. Recent studies have confirmed that it is actually an emission nebula.

The Lobster Nebula SH2-157 is a faint emission nebula located approximately 11,000 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia. This nebula contains several very compact regions, the most conspicuous of which is Sh2-157A; it is a luminous cluster visible in the Hα band.

H II + elettrone → ricombinazione → emissione Hα → luce rossa a 656,3 nm
