This area of the southern Yukon is not a true desert, not even a cold desert. The climate of the region is too moist. In prehistoric times lake water here receded, revealing a sandy bottom. Constant winds have continually caused the sand to shift, preventing the establishment of most plants, with the notable exception of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), here at the northern limit of its range. All losses are caused by different reasons, but a select few of them happen because something was straight out taken from us, or we were taken ourselves. Imagine being not only stripped of your clothes, your dignity, and your pride, but also being forced to go along for the ride. A ride that involves no acceptance, no going with the flow, no ability to fight, just being absolutely forced to comply with everything and everyone being taken from you.
This can all be metaphorical to describe a situation in your life, but it can also be exactly what it describes. Sex trafficking is still a very real thing and is one of the worst kind of losses you can go through as a human being. Did you know that over 27 million people a year are forced into jobs, not just sexual ones, but hard labor jobs as well? You hear about the numbers sometimes of women and girls forced to be sex slaves, but you don't hear about the number of slaves working on farms, ranches, in mines, and this doesn't even include the number of inmates locked up on bogus crimes and forced to do the jobs society has deemed undesirable. Silenced, subdued, shackled, and sometimes raped repeatedly, there are depths a person can fall into that are unimaginable while the rest of the world declares "We should do something." While sipping their starbucks, and going to get a massage on the weekend at the spa from one of the trafficked women in town.
Next time you feel like you've lost everything, just remember there's a lot further you could fall, and your situation can most likely be fixed a lot easier than some other people's darkest days.

Les incendies dévastateurs qui frappent actuellement Los Angeles ont causé des ravages considérables depuis leur déclenchement le 7 janvier 2025. The devastating wildfires currently raging in Los Angeles have caused considerable devastation since they broke out on January 7, 2025. The fires, fueled by winds of up to 100 mph, have already destroyed more than 2,000 buildings and forced the evacuation of 130,000 people in several neighborhoods, including Hollywood and Pacific Palisades. At least five people have lost their lives, mostly while trying to protect their homes!
Amidst this chaos, photographers including Swanson are on the front lines, capturing the scale of the disaster. They document not only the physical destruction, but also the emotions of the evacuees and the heroic efforts of the firefighters. The images released show landscapes ravaged by flames, as well as chaotic evacuation scenes.
These photographs play a crucial role in raising awareness of the gravity of the situation and the impacts of climate change on the region !

Nasty day on the Carolina Coast. The Hurricane Center finally came into line with the European models and now has Juaquin on a northerly heading with a predicted turn to the North East tonight. That puts the storm out further in the Atlantic away from the Outer Banks. That's the good news. The bad is that the storm has a tropical system boxed in along the coast which is causing flash flooding. Coulda been a lot worse but today is no picnic here. Cheers everybody and have a good weekend.

After a long delay caused by 4014 striking a tree causing a punctured cylinder, the excursion seemed to be making up time until it reached Coldstream Canyon just outside Truckee. As it was about to reach the canyon, the brakes on one of the cars close to the rear had locked up causing for an immediate halt. After a quick inspection the train was back on the move again and managed to make it to Sparks.
