Given the recent wintry weather, together with the substantial residential developments that have taken place in Harpur Hill since this image was taken, I've decided to shunt this shot forward from 8 years ago as a reminder of the rather more sleepy hamlet it used to be. The original upload has been deleted.
The main subject is the row of dwellings but, just above them, one of the few trains a day that use this active quarry line is discreetly approaching. Well, perhaps not so discreetly given a labouring locomotive and quite the climb at this point.
DBS shed 66154 is at the head of the 11.10am Tunstead - Briggs Sidings, Hindlow (6H22) 1600t loaded limestone. The train is unusually being top and tailed by unit 66238 just about visible at the back, this due to points damage at its destination caused by a derailment a month earlier.
As usual there's something uniquely attractive about a village in the snow and I snapped the train early to avoid drawing the eye too much away from the houses. Looks best full-screen, but not for everyone!

Looking north along the San Mateo County Coastline, I'm drawn to the geometric variability, caused by the ever shifting whims of the tide. The marine layer is just starting to dominate the scene, replacing the warm spaces of sunlight with moist, bone chilling air.

The upper reaches of the Rainworth Water River flowing through Fountaindale, Nottinghamshire. It’s red sandy bed is caused by a combination of iron in the water and the loose sandy soil of Sherwood Forest. The river was once much greater, but mine workings and drinking water extraction lowered the water table and it has all but dried up above this point.
The River Name is thought to mean "Water of Reghnere's Ford". Reghnere was the son of the King of East Anglia, and was killed fighting the forces of Æthelfrith of Northumbria at the Battle of the River Idle (617), somewhere in North Nottinghamshire or South Yorkshire. It is possible that Rainworth Water was originally considered the headwater of the River Idle (into which it eventually flows) and that after the battle took place (possibly somewhere near Rainworth Village), this upper section was renamed after the fallen Anglian Warrior. Further evidence of this is a tributary of the river that bore the name "Olde Idle".
It is on this section of River that Friar Tuck is supposed to have lived, and battled with Robin Hood before joining his band.
The Rainworth Water has entered modern legend as it forms the viral video hotspot of Rufford Ford, which claims many a motorist's dignity and has the dubious honour of being the UK's No.1 breakdown hotspot.

After a long delay caused by 4014 striking a tree causing a punctured cylinder, the excursion seemed to be making up time until it reached Coldstream Canyon just outside Truckee. As it was about to reach the canyon, the brakes on one of the cars close to the rear had locked up causing for an immediate halt. After a quick inspection the train was back on the move again and managed to make it to Sparks.
