Winston has a friend help him out. It was worth the risk. It was so rare, having homemade chocolate chip cookies in this house.

Whenever I spot a pollinator at an unnatural angle to a flower, I know what I'll find if I check it out. Several times this year I found crab spiders with prey much larger than they were, and I wondered how this works. Web-spinning spiders have the advantage of silk helping to hold the prey, but crab spiders don't use silk in the capture process. As you might guess, the spider snatches the unlucky victim with its two long front pairs of legs, but still, couldn't a bumble bee six times the size get away from that hold? I guess they must be super fast with the bite as well, because it's the venom that does the trick. Very potent and fast-acting, it quickly immobilizes even large prey – but thankfully isn't harmful to humans.

A Yellow-crowned Night heron is in a bit of a quandary as the canoe slips ever closer to his position. I always try to leave the birds as I found them in nature and was able to back away and allow him to go about his business. Photo taken on Horsepen Bayou.

A toy mouse for a change, slightly drier and less tasty than the mice Sethi usually catches. Kind of strange too not to hear the humans bitching and moaning about the "poor mousie" and calling the efficient mouser a murderer. We will be back to that tomorrow morning (at the latest).
Sad ending for two beautiful lacewings. But that is nature.
