The main cathedral in Pienza was hard to photograph being half in and half out of the light. Very beautiful in its simplicity, The spire of the church can be seen in the previous image.

The Duomo (Cathedral), which dominates the center of the piazza, has a facade that is one of the earliest designed in the Renaissance manner. Though the tripartite division is conventional, the use of pilasters and of columns, standing on high dados and linked by arches, was novel for the time.

The bell tower, however, has a Germanic flavor as is the layout of the Hallenkirche plan, a "triple-nave" plan where the side aisles are almost as tall as the nave; Pius, before he became pope, served many years in Germany and praised the effects of light admitted into the German hall churches in his Commentari.

Works of art in the duomo include five altar paintings from the Sienese School, by Sano di Pietro, Matteo di Giovanni, Vecchietta and Giovanni di Paolo. The Baptistry, dedicated as usual to San Giovanni, is located next to the apse of the church.

Salisbury Cathedral, formally known as the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is an Anglican cathedral in Salisbury, England, and one of the leading examples of Early English architecture.[2] The main body of the cathedral was completed in only 38 years, from 1220 to 1258.

The cathedral has the tallest church spire in the United Kingdom (123m/404 ft).

As we entered this deadly silent cathedral, the only people within there too, this magnificant light shone down - a magical moment.

This sculpture next to Chichester Cathedral is Thresholds by Diane Maclean. We went to have a look at them on the recommendation of Flickr friend, Sarah Cowell. It took several attempts to get everything in this shot and have it lined up straight!!

Have a lovely weekend, everyone. xox

Cathedral, Brussels, Belgium,, 12 May 2023

I took this shot not only for the organ pipes, but for the colors and qualities of light that the interaction of cathedral and sun create for the people inside. If its magical for us, think what it must have meant to the poor and simple folk of a previous era. (Author Robert Bloch had some interesting thoughts on this in his memoirs, ONCE AROUND THE BLOCH). UPDATE: Checking my PITKIN CATHEDRAL GUIDE, I find that the organ was placed at the crossing of the cathedral by sir George Gilbert Scott during his restoration of the church during the late 19th century (pp. 6-7).

Strasbourg Cathedral or the Cathedral of Our Lady of Strasbourg, also known as Strasbourg Minster, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Strasbourg, Alsace, France.

At 142 metres (466 feet), it was the world's tallest building from 1647 to 1874 (227 years), when it was surpassed by St. Nikolai's Church, Hamburg. Today it is the sixth-tallest church in the world and the highest extant structure built entirely in the Middle Ages.

The cathedral has its origins in AD 672 when St Etheldreda built an abbey church. The present building dates back to 1083, and cathedral status was granted it in 1109. Until the Reformation it was the Church of St Etheldreda and St Peter, at which point it was refounded as the Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity of Ely, continuing as the principal church of the Diocese of Ely, in Cambridgeshire. It is the seat of the Bishop of Ely and a suffragan bishop, the Bishop of Huntingdon. Architecturally it is outstanding both for its scale and stylistic details. Having been built in a monumental Romanesque style, the galilee porch, lady chapel and choir were rebuilt in an exuberant Decorated Gothic. Its most notable feature is the central octagonal tower, with lantern above, which provides a unique internal space and, along with the West Tower, dominates the surrounding landscape. Ely Cathedral is a major tourist destination, receiving around 250,000 visitors per year, and sustains a daily pattern of morning and evening services.

Over the next few days I'll be sharing a few shots from a visit to Chichester Cathedral a couple of weeks ago.

Chichester Cathedral isn't that big but it is rather beautiful inside, although It's one of those buildings that isn't entirely symmetrical and it's a bit higgledy-piggledy in places. I really loved the chandeliers hanging in the nave though, they added a nice touch.

With this virus thing and the weather I haven't been out to get any images over the last couple of weeks and I don't know when I'll be out again at all. The world has gone a little bit crazy, hasn't it?

I hope everyone is keeping safe and well? Hopefully, this will all be over soon enough and we can start trying to rebuild our lives, a lot of people have been affected by this and it's going to take a long time for us all to get back to normal.

Matera, Basilicata, Italy

The cathedral was built in Apulian Romanesque style in the 13th century on the ridge that forms the highest point of the city of Matera and divides the two Sassi, on the site of the ancient Church of Saint Eustace, protector of the city. Construction began in 1203, the year in which Pope Innocent III raised Matera to the rank of an archdiocese in union with Acerenza as the Archdiocese of Acerenza and Matera, and was completed in 1270.

The original dedication was to Santa Maria di Matera, as recorded in a contemporary notarial document. Then, on the evidence of a will of 1318, it was entitled Santa Maria dell'Episcopio, and from 1389, the year in which Pope Urban VI (already Archbishop of Matera), instituted the feast of the Visitation, it was dedicated to Santa Maria della Bruna, also a protector of the city. Finally, from 1627 Monsignor Fabrizio Antinori, archbishop of Matera, dedicated the cathedral to the Madonna della Bruna and to Saint Eustace.
