Newman's boyhood copy of the Catechism of the Church of England

From Wikipedia: The Grand Marian Procession is intended to promote religious catechism through publicly parading images outside the Manila cathedral on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

In addition, the Cofradia is known for selecting more than ninety of the most prominent and liturgically inspiring Marian images in the country, most notably the ones featured, as the canonically crowned images in the Philippines, such as the Our Lady of La Naval de Manila and Our Lady of Manaoag.

WELS Multi-Language Productions (MLP) is partnering with the Bethany Lutheran College Fine Arts department to produce illustrations of Bible stories and Catechism lessons for use in world mission fields. Fourteen ELS/WELS artists came together alongside Rev. Dr. Terry Schultz, Artistic Development Missionary for MLP, to illustrate 54 Biblical accounts for use in Zambian Sunday Schools. Church leaders in Zambia plan to distribute these illustrations for use as inexpensive, impactful visual aids in Sunday School classes.

The “Images of Grace,” exhibition is available from August 31-September 27, 2022 in the Ylvisaker Fine Arts Center Gallery. A special gallery reception was held on September 1 at 7 p.m. (pictured). It include a panel discussion with Rev. Dr. Terry Schultz; Rev. Larry Schlomer, WELS World Missions Administrator; Professor Andrew Overn, Art Director; and various contributing artists.

This exhibit represents the beginning of an ongoing project and partnership between Bethany’s Art Department and Multi-Language Productions.

This handy lil book is the Youth Catechism of the Catholic Church, or the YouCat. Besides being a sunny, egg yolk yellow and having a little flipbook animation at the bottom corner of each page, Pope Benedict XVI put this together for teens and the youth so they would have a better understanding of the Church. It is in question and answer form and separated into four parts: What We Believe, How We Celebrate the Christian Mysteries, How We Are to Have Life in Christ and How We Should Pray. There are many saint quotes and Bible verses included as well. It's a really nifty book and you should pick up a copy. :)

Fun fact: this picture took about 20 tries. Literally.

At the Consecration, say: "Flesh of Christ, hail, sweet oblation, Sacrifice for our salvation ; On the cross a victim slain. Bread of angels, ever living. Health and hope to mortals giving." ~ The Catechism Explained.

Superior Performance.

Joe was born in Aurora, Illinois but his parents, Tim and Mary Collins, raised Joe and his younger sister, Nancy, in South Beloit, just a short distance from Viking Lanes. Joe became exposed to bowling at the early age of five, when his Dad would stop by Viking Lanes and let him bowl for fun after church and catechism. With his early exposure to bowling he spent many of his growing up years at Viking Lanes with George & Junice Nelson, Viking Lanes owners.

He bowled in the Youth leagues through high school, posting 5 league championships in the youngest division and two straight league championships when he moved into the older junior division. As a junior bowler he attended a few state tournaments and bowled in the junior city tournaments.

Joe continued to fine-tune his bowling skills and in 1981 he rolled his first 300 game in the Kings & Queens league at Viking Lanes. He has rolled 5 additional 300 games along with a 298 and 299. He has bowled over 150 – 700 series. During his bowling career, Joe attained a high average of 224 and a high series of 790.

After placing in the top 20 of the finals in the Daily News tournaments on numerous occasions, Joe celebrated victory in 1987 when he won the Daily News tournament with a total pin count of 4,590. The 2nd place competitor was no less than our other inductee tonight — Dave Pollentier. Competition was close right down to the last frame...at the end only 5 pins separated 1st and 2nd AND only 11 pins to third place. That same year Joe won the city tournament All Events Scratch and Handicap division. In 1993 Joe was honored as Division I Bowler of the Year for the 1992-93 season.

Joe placed in the Pabst/Pepsi tournament finals 4 times and in the finals at the Viking Spring Shootout numerous times with a best of 2nd place. Over his bowling career, he captured many high league average awards as well as league championships.

Joe has participated in 12 Wisconsin State Tournaments and two ABC National Tournaments. Throughout his years of bowling he held various league officer positions, serving 5 years as President of the Rockton Men’s League.

During Joe’s bowling years he found time to enjoy other joys of life...he and Jan were married in 1983. Joe spends much of his time now with family and friends. He and Jan have a son Gregg and his wife Theresa – grandsons Tyler & Aaron and daughter Denise – grandchildren Ashley, Alissa, & Jacob. Joe has picked up a few other relaxing hobbies such as fishing and golf.
