Cloe was soaking up the moonlight as we were on our first model night shoot, back in June 2010. She found a comfortable log to rest against for the one minute exposure. f5.6 at 100 iso. 20mm.

If you look close to her raised leg you will see the mosquito that was sucking the blood out of her, but she didn't flinch...

ps. I have been sitting on this one till I learned how to process it properly...:D

What happens when you mix 4 photographers a box of steel wool and the kitchen whisk together? Well in our case some fun pyrotechnics on the bridge of course..I'm sure the neighboring cottages wondered what was going on. Then again it was midnight:D....

f5.6 1 minute 200 ISO...

Ok so here it is.... my first attempt at model photography. Heather was just super at allowing US to photograph her for an afternoon. I learned a lot about the lighting, natural, and flashes and reflected. Also the camera settings for people are a whole lot different than for landscapes;-} I found settings I have never used before. She was so patient with us, because she already knew how to pose and find the light, from being on the show "Canada's Next Top Model the first season" I can see where I made all my mistakes, and learned a lot. Thanks Heather!!!!!!!

I really like this shot. It shows me the greatness of this 50mm f1.4 lens; low light shooting and wonderful bokeh-maker..

Yeah, BIG thanks to dump9x for giving me chance to explore this lens. I'm getting used with manual focusing and fixed focal length..

Probably saving more from now on, and find this lens on the used market. Or, buy the new AF-S 35mm f1.8 with the same price range, that will fully compatible with my D40x.. Any suggestions?

Thought tonight was going to be a bust, but the rain stopped and we headed to Erieau to see if the clouds were still hovering about. Well we were treated to a light show as well. Warm breeze for the better part of the evening and then suddenly a cooler breeze made it's way to our spot.

Tried a few shots at ISO 500 13 seconds to catch the lightning and the lit up clouds against the dark sky. The full moon up to the right gave just the right amount of ambient light for the water. Not a wasted night after all...

Another from a summer shoot with Heather. This old house would have Holmes on Homes at an impass I think. The exposed brick behind the plaster added such a textured feel to the scene...That old steel bed was just a bonus in the room....

Lighting details by Bob

Heather made explore again ;-}

Bob and I getting in a beautiful sunset from the Yacht Club veranda in Rondeau Park.

Decided to catch the moonrise from the western side of the bay this night.It was a really windy night and you could feel the vibration in the tripod. Didn't seem to bother the capture though. You're looking at the lights from the cottages in Rondeau Park. The cottage where we were standing is in a small hamlet called Rondeau Bay Estates. Classy huh???

15 minutes f5 100 ISO....

Experiment number one....A set of 139 images compiled in startrails de. Something a little different using waves in the daytime, instead of the startrails at night ;-}.....

We took a ride up to Grand Bend yesterday and did the cruise along the lake back to Sarnia and decided to stop and get a shot of the Bluewater bridge. Well it happened to be sunset too and it was just tooo good to walk away from. 5 shot bracketed ...

Bob and I need to go back there for some night shots.....

The moon finally made an appearance from the mud of the clouds. And a treat to a halo just added to the shot...2 minutes f4 100 iso...

As a side note while waiting for the moon to make it's appearance, there is a local bar to hang out in, so needless to say we were not without entertainment. They make a great Long Island Ice Tea. The waitress asked me what kind and she listed off all the white liquors. I just said Ok everything but the vodka :D......

(I stole the title;-}) whoo hoo #3 in Explore

Taken at 1:45 pm, harsh sun, minimum clouds, little wind, and just learning about reflectors and lighting. Tried to blind poor Heather with the gold 5 ft reflector, but I did like some of the results from it. Remember this is a new learning curve for me...Needed a flash on her right side, or have her turn a little more to the reflector. And look she's smiling too.......Bob and I had the greatest day shooting Heather and I hope to do it again now that I can see all the mistakes I made....

I was inspired by a show called "Naked in the House" where several photographers have a specified amount of time to take as many photos as they can of a naked model in an unusual location.

And before you ask "Mom" Kayla was wearing her bikini, just a placing of her arms and legs gave the illusion......

3 snooted flashes one upper to the right another mid to the left and one on the floor.

This was actually Bob's idea ;-}

Local college students were at our favorite beach tonight getting in just one more campfire before the cold settles in. They were amazed at how much light the near full moon gives off. The sat pretty still for this 2 minute capture.

Came across yet another deserted home on #3 highway. The rolls of hay or straw (never could tell the difference) were just shining under the full moon as was the house itself..

We used to tell the kids the rolls were giant marshmallows fields ;-}

The fog was rolling in heavy this night and we had a short time span to capture the image before we and our cameras were wet with the dew.

After a day out getting some snow shots we stayed for the sunset in Erieau. I did a 3 bracketed shot and blended in PS. Tried a few actions just to bring out the details. Also I was undecided if it needed a crop or not? Also flickr seemed to oversharpen when I uploaded it.

A night on the beach was the perfect time to celebrate the long awaited spring. A full moon was the light of the night. This was the last stop of the night after an evening of shooting. 1 a.m. 60 seconds f4 iso100..

Hello Darkness

The sunsets seem to be getting a little more interesting this summer. Chloe on the rocks with the sun setting on Lake Erie.

This bit of web caught my attention during the shoot with Heather. Thought it would be a good one to post just before I go off on a holiday to get some more pics from Tobermory. Yay can't wait!!!!!!! See ya in a week!!!!!!!

Always check to see if you returned to 100 ISO after doing a set of 30 at 800 ISO...Because on a 62 minute exposure of the moon rising it tends to blow out just a tad...Not to mention, the 62 minutes more, in dark frame to realize I had done just that..

..And this was brought down 2 stops in Lightroom...sigh....

So Shotzy if you are seeing this "been there done that"...

Apparently it pays to go back into the archives. I had totaly passed over this one because of the soft focus on Sarah. Buttt a little B&W a touch of split toning, and I kinda like it..

Might have to revisit some others :D...Full moon on the beach...

Had the best night out with the boys

Cale Bob John

Cale was the new guy so he was elected/volunteered to go inside and flash the walls for this shot. We started out the day specking out a gravel pit, with 22 rifle bullets flying over the car. Not at us in particular just some kids doing target practice in the yard :-}, went to Erieau for a bite to eat, caught the sunset over the lake, around to Erie Beach for the moonrise, along the shore of the lake for some pyrotechincs, and finished up the night at this old house for some fun shots and star trails. At quarter to 3 we decided to call it a night. Great times....More pics to come...

More fun in the sun with Kayla. Taken from the beach where we have done many a night shoot. Silver reflector to bring up the high sun shadows, and not much else to do in processing. She is a real trooper, the water was a bit cool this day.....

Whilst searching for pebbles the other week we found a huge amount of water worn glass at Half Moon Bay, Heysham. We collected as much of it as we could and then pondered some ideas for how to use it.

Although I usually only use natural materials I felt that water worn glass found on the beach still fell within my self imposed rules for my land art. There is so much glass on that beach that I think making a sculpture from it would communicate how much of it is there and what different colours are present. Also the fact that it is water worn means that making a sculpture is possible as the glass is easy to handle.

Half Moon Bay sits along the edge of Morecambe Bay, a massive natural feature which means that the coastal drift is prevented and the pebbles don't keep travelling along the shore as would happen on open coastlines. My theory then is that there is so much glass there as it has become trapped and has no open coastline on which to spread and is therefore much more concentrated than on other coastlines. When we were on the east coast earlier in the week there was some glass there but not much. That is another reason I have drawn the conclusion I have.

Secondly most of the glass is clear (or milky because of the water wear), with lesser amounts of green, brown and then very little of blue and light green. This is reflected in the different amounts of glass piled on each rock. Finally the glass on the left was stained pink by using the iron rich rock present there, crushing it to a powder and then staining the glass.

My first idea was to pile up the different colours between two rocks to make a stained glass window effect, but it kept falling down and I couldn't predict where the sun would strike it the best and the tide was coming in fast. So eventually I decided to pile them on rocks so they would catch the sun and reveal the colours.

Despite not using natural materials, for me this sculpture has all the elements I want in land art. It reveals to me an aspect of that beach, making me wonder why there is so much glass there. How clear glass is common yet blue is very rare. My ideas were constrained by what the material would allow me to build, the incoming tide had a bearing on how long I had and the movement and position of the sun were important to the final effect.

That is what Land Art is all about for me.

Has to be be viewed on black to see the sunlight properly.

The elusive Christmas Snowflake Fairy is a favorite of mine for many years now. She pops into our home around this time of year to brighten up the room. She has an un-canning way about her, as she changes from blue to green to red to white. She makes it very hard to capture a picture of her. But as luck would have it the new digital's have made it much easier to see the little Lady as she passes through. It seems when she comes out, the snow comes with her. ... Keep a watch, she may be floating somewhere in your home over the holidays.

She wishes everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year.

Taken on an excursion with Renn Pauline and Bob at Burnt Point. Super night out even though the clouds caused some breaks in my star trails.

Out with Bob and John on a Saturday night. I finally got a shot of the moon. Used the Tokina 80-400, trying to get the seagulls across the slip. Gave up on that as they would not co-operate and stand still, so I pointed it at the moon with the setting of 400mm F5.6 100 ISO and 1/200 sec. Woo Hoo I got one.......

That's how many images it took to get the effect I wanted for this. Learned a lot;-}

Happy Valentines day to everyone.......

So you're out doing a shoot on the beach, with one off camera flash and two remotes controlling it. You're too slow on the trigger and miss the flash, what do you do???? Well in this case you post an awesome silhouette!!!! Thanks Kayla for an awesome day. And Bob for getting ahead of me with the remote ;-}.

Sept 3 12:04 a.m. while taking a long exposure on the final days of summer I happened to capture this bright streak of orange across the night sky. It lasted for about 4 seconds and at the end it burst into a large ball of light and disappeared, unfortunately out of my camera sites. It wasn't a plane because there was no noise and it traveled way to fast.

f4.5 30 sec. iso 800 in the BNLH :D

From early last Saturday morning at 7:30 am brrrrr. We caught the sunrise over the mountains of Lake Erie. I zoomed in a bit 108 mm because you could see the ice had caused mountain regions on the horizon. You could hear the ice cracking as the waves or currents were moving under it. Also way out the seagulls were beginning to fly and you could hear their call as they moved along. Made for an interesting way to start our day.

Walking out the pier in Erieau on a bright Sunday afternoon, the ice shifting as it begins it's spring melt. The aqua colour under the ice intrigued me, was it the sun shinning through or the algae stuck to the bottom??? Again with the Pentax 80- 200

And a HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our Daughter Lisa!!!!

This little Jack in the pulpit was growing in a friends garden, and I just had to have a pic. of it.

This little girl was wondering why she can not catch the light.

Photo taken @ 2012 Illuminate Yaletown

Both Kayla and I had to wait for Bob's computer to be repaired that is. His crashed last Friday and we had to share mine for the week. Not an easy thing to do when I had all these fantastic pictures of Kayla from the last photo shoot with her.

Off camera snooted flash from behind and to the right, with natural light from the broken window of an abandoned house visited before.

Found that metering in the shadows was not that easy. Had to go to manual to set the desired results. (I've been an AV priority girl)

A bit about Kayla, flawless skin!!!! No gaussian blur needed, very patient, new to modelling, and best of all available!!!!

Beyond the Black, 22.10.2022 - Offenbach

So out looking for another place to catch the March full moon and remembered that there was a cool white birch in this cemetary. Well why not, after all it's only 12:45 am, and I'm sure no one will notice, except perhaps the neighbor, but I'm pretty sure he was fast asleep by then, right Dane....A bit of a breeze moved the tops of the branches giving it just a bit of character....While walking through couldn't help but notice some solar lights at some sites, soooo is this for our benefit or the ones that creep up from below??????

f5.6 6 minutes...100 ISO

With the final of the 5 wind turbines erected near Ridgetown, the farmers are getting the corn off to the driers. It was such a clear blue day I couldn't resist getting the giant in the perfect light. Funny how they look so much bigger in the daylight ;-}

Went out last night to get the rising moon at the neighbors back yard. Had everything set up for the one to 2 hour exposure evening, coffee in the thermos, lawn chairs to sit a spell, warm coats in case it got cooler, hotshots to attach to the lens to keep the moisture at bay, (hence the oval cropping managed to get the edges of the packets in the image ;-}) Should have been perfect.

BUT wouldn't you know if you're that prepared something had to go wrong.....25 minutes into the shoot and the fog just rolled in over the bean field and covered the moon and us with a blanket of moisture...

Still for a 25 minute exposure I think it turned out pretty good. Will go back and try this again sometime.

Thanks to Kevin and Kathy Dilliott for the use of their back yard.....

28 minutes f4 iso100

The sun had risen and we still had coffee so why not get a few shots of the area were were in. A beautiful cove called Dunk`s Point or Burnt Point.....The islands in the distance started to shine in the early morning sun. Ahhhh the stillness of it all....

There is just something about her eyes....Another from the shoot this summer. Did a little playing with the colours, but her eyes just stood out...Natural sunlight through the barn doors F5.6 250mm, apparently I was playing with the big lens ;-}

Wow how time flies. It has been a while since my last post but seems like just a few days. Out for the Canada Day celebrations in Erieau. Looked like we were in for a storm just before the show when the winds whipped up and took out some trees in the village. But karma stepped in and all calmed in just in time. Beautiful night on the beach...
