The Castillo de San Marcos (St. Mark's Castle) is a stone fort adjacent to the old town of Saint Augustine, Florida. Early in the 16th century, Spanish Conquistadors had claimed Florida for Spain, but there was no further action until 1565. In that year, a Spanish expedition founded the town of Saint Augustine and the fort of San Marcos. Wooden defenses gave way to a stone castle built in 1671-1695. The castle was modified in the 18th and 19th centuries, to become the structure we see today. I visited this place on May 10, 2016.

The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States (Castillo San Felipe del Morro in San Juan, Puerto Rico is older). Located on the shore of Matanzas Bay in the city of St. Augustine, Florida, construction began in 1672, 107 years after the city's founding by Spanish Admiral and conquistador Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, when Florida was part of the Spanish Empire.

History tidbit: (courtesy of Wikipedia) The Castillo de San Marcos site is the oldest masonry fort in the United States. Construction begun in 1672 by the Spanish when Florida was a Spanish territory. Construction lasted twenty-three years, with completion in 1695. The Castillo is a masonry star fort made of a stone called coquina, Spanish for "small shells", made of ancient shells that have bonded together to form a type of stone similar to limestone.

The city of St. Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565. Over the next one hundred years, the city was defended by nine wooden forts. Following the 1668 attack of the English pirate Robert Searle, it was decided by Mariana, Queen Regent of Spain, that a masonry fortification be constructed to protect the city. In October 1672 construction began on the fort that would become the Castillo de San Marcos.

The Castillo is a masonry star fort made of a stone called coquina, literally "little shells", made of ancient shells that have bonded together to form a type of stone similar to limestone. Workers were brought in from Havana, Cuba, to construct the fort. The coquina was quarried from Anastasia Island across the bay from the Castillo, and ferried across to the construction site. Construction lasted twenty-three years, being completed in 1695.

Spanish Saint Augustine had for defenses the nearby Castillo de San Marcos (St. Mark's Castle) and a log wall around the town itself. The log wall is long gone, but segments have been rebuilt, as we see here. The stone castle still is here. I visited Saint Augustine on April 10, 2018.

An amusette was simply an oversized musket on a swivel mount. In the field, the piece was carried in the handcart we see here. In a castle, the swivel mount would be inserted in sockets prepared along the wall to shoot down at attackers.

The castle lasted so long due to the solid stone blocks it was built of. These blocks were made of the local sand mixed with seashells, all cut and set by hand!

The sign reads: "During the First Spanish Period, prior to 1763, this site was occupied by the Christian Indian village of Tolomato, with its chapel and burying ground served by Fransiscan missionaries. The village was abandoned when Great Britain acquired Florida. In 1777 Father Pedro Camps, pastor of the Minorcan colonists, who had come to St. Augustine after the failure of Andrew Turnbull’s settlement at New Smyrna, obtained persmission from Governor Patrick Tonyn to establish this cemetery for his parishioners. Father Camps was buried here in 1790; ten years later his remains were re-interred in the “new church,” the present Cathedral. The first bishop of St. Augustine, Augustin Verot (d. 1976), is buried in the mortuary chapel at the rear of the cemetery. The last burial took place in 1892."
