The fort was really just used as a warehouse until someone came along wanting to take over Saint Augustine, then it would become protection for as many as 1,500 people. Hurricane Irma flooded the moat at the Castillo De San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida. Afterwards, the water was so still and clear that I could see both a perfect reflection of the coquina wall and the underneath grass that normally would be there.

Here is where they would keep an eye out on the ships that were making their way into the port. They could be seen well before the fort was in range, meaning that the fort was always ready when someone tried to come and invade.

At the end of the Revolutionary war, Florida was returned to Spain in 1784 until Florida became a US territory in 1821. Became a National monument in 1924.

I am not sure what this is. It was along the bay outside the fort in Saint Augistine. I image it was a dock of some sort where they could park a ship as they were unloading supplies, or maybe just something to keep the earth from washing away.

Happy Wall Wednesday!

Castillo de San Marcos was for many years the northernmost outpost of Spain's vast New World empire. It is the oldest masonry fort and the best-preserved example of a Spanish colonial fortification in the continental United States. It protected St. Augustine from pirate raids and from Spain's major rival, Great Britain, during a time when the Florida-Georgia-Carolina coastline was an explosive international battleground.

▶ "The Castillo de San Marcos (Spanish for "St. Mark's Castle") is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States; it is located on the western shore of Matanzas Bay in the city of St. Augustine, Florida, built by the Spanish to protect the city.

The Castillo is a masonry star fort made of a stone called coquina (Spanish for "small shells"), which consists of ancient shells that have bonded together to form a sedimentary rock similar to limestone. Construction began in 1672 and was completed in 1695, though the structure would undergo many alterations and renovations over the centuries. Native Americans from Spain's nearby missions did most of the labor, with additional skilled workers brought in from Havana, Cuba."

In 1924, the Castillo (then named Fort Marion) was declared a U.S. National Monument. In 1933, the National Park Service assumed responsibility. In 1942, the original name, Castillo de San Marcos, was restored.

She was built for war, sturdy walls, tall towers and had many guns, She was ready to protect the town from anything that came into the bay... Or was she? She never saw battle, and from my understanding all she really did was store goods along as soldiers for many years. Either way, she stands strong to this day and is an awesome visit if you get to Saint Augustine. They neat thing if you look at the map and where she sits, if you were an incoming ship and you thought you could enter the waters of Saing Augustine, By the time you saw San Marcos sitting on the shore, it was too late. The inlet is narrow there and she is a bit hidden from the mouth of the inlet, the position of the fort would make it pretty easy to defend.

The Matanzas River at St. Augustine was the main entrance to the historic city, America's oldest port. River was traditionally considered the "backdoor" to the city of St. Augustine, and control of the river was considered a strategic necessity for the early Spanish colony at St. Augustine.

It is a narrow saltwater bar-bounded estuary sheltered from the Atlantic Ocean by Anastasia Island. The Matanzas River does not flow in one direction, as it is tidally influenced by the two inlets. The river has a tidal range of up to 6 feet (1.8 m).

At the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, FL.

When the British attacked St. Augustine in summer 1740, they expected a quick and easy victory. They underestimated the strength of the Castillo de San Marcos and the courage of its Spanish defenders. After besieging the town for 38 days the British gave up and returned to Georgia.

Photographer's notes:

☞ How to capture an image of a tourist-heavy 'honey-pot' location? Take a non-'snapshot-y' image? I don't know the answer but, in this case, I opted to take a photo with very little of the Castillo. I framed up two palm trees to the right of the southeastern bastion of the star-shaped fortress (just out-of-frame) with a portion of the fortress' low-slung seawall (that holds back Matanzas Bay) just visible beyond. And, considering the 'rule' of odds, I should point out there is a third tree in the frame, if only partially visible in the distance.

☞ On 11 July 2022, Flickr's editors selected this image for inclusion in Flickr's Explore feature.

☞ Thank you to fellow Flickr-er Scott Zona for identifying these as Sabal palmetto trees, Florida's state tree.
