Memorial with statue. 1884. By JE Boehm, sculptor. Dressed granite. Square plan. Stepped base to vermiculated plinth ramped in to polished pink granite chest with moulded white granite cornice and sloped in as base to large bronze statue of Sir Francis Drake with globe under his right hand and his left hand on his sword. Low perimeter fence with granite plinth and chains between turned cast-iron stanchions. (The Buildings of England: Pevsner N: Devon: London: 1989-: 665).
When it was decided to erect a national monument to Sir Francis Drake there was a poor response in terms of hard cash. The first list of subscribers was published on Thursday June 23rd 1881 and showed that only £513 12s had been received by the Honorary Treasurer, Mr William Derry. The largest donations, of £50 each, had been given by Sir Francis Drake (not the original one, of course, but a later relative) and Mr Derry himself. The Mayor of Plymouth, Mr F A Morrish, gave £25, as did the Reverend T A Bewes and Mr Burnard.
While arguments raged about what to do, the Duke of Bedford paid for the statue to be erected at Tavistock. It was designed by Sir Joseph Boehm RA and the Duke later gave him permission to make a replica for a much reduced sum. It was this 10 feet high bronze replica that was placed on Plymouth Hoe and it was unveiled by Lady Fuller Drake of Nutwell Court, Honiton, on February 14th 1884. A chair made from the timbers of Drake's ship the "Golden Hind" was used at the ceremony.
Lady Drake was the wife of Sir Francis Fuller Drake, a representative of the female line of Drake's brother, Thomas.
The statue was cast and erected under the supervision of Mr Moore of the Thames Ditton Foundry. The pedestal of Aberdeen granite was designed by Messrs Hine and Odger, of Lockyer Street, Plymouth, and was erected by Mr Samuel Roach, also of Plymouth. Students from the Royal Naval Engineering College had time off between 10.30am and 2.30pm to be present at the unveiling ceremony. There were about 6,000 people present, with several bands, guards of honour naval reserve, highlanders and marines, 2,000 school children, the fire brigade and three fire engines. A salute was fired from 17 guns on the Hoe, the noise and smoke being blown on to the crowd.
At the time of the 400th Anniversary of Drake's circumnavigation of the globe the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Mr Ramsey Thornton, received from the Sir Francis Drake Commission of California a plaque commemorating Drake's landing somewhere in Marin County, California, in June 1579. Ten members of the Commission and their families arrived in Plymouth on Tuesday August 2nd 1977 and presented the plaque to the Lord Mayor at a special banquet.
The plaque was subsequently added to the base of Drake's statue and reads:
FRANCIS DRAKE SAILED FROM PLYMOUTH ON DECEMBER 13, 1577, TO
BEGIN THE "FAMOUS VOYAGE" DURING WHICH HE TRAVERSED THE STRAIT
OF MAGELLAN AND DISCOVERED DRAKE PASSAGE SOUTH OF CAPE HORN.
DRAKE THEN SAILED THE GOLDEN HINDE NORTH AND IN JUNE 1579
LANDED IN CALIFORNIA; HE TOOK POSSESSION OF THAT REGION FOR
QUEEN ELIZABETH NAMING IT NOVA ALBION. HE RETURNED TO PLYMOUTH SEPTEMBER 26, 1580, HAVING CIRCUMNAVIGATED THE GLOBE. DRAKE
WAS KNIGHTED ABOARD THE GOLDEN HINDE AT DEPTFORD IN THE
PRESENCE OF QUEEN ELIZABETH ON APRIL 4, 1581.
THIS PLAQUE WAS PRESENTED AUGUST 5, 1977, BY THE STATE OF
CALIFORNIA SIR FRANCIS DRAKE COMMISSION IN COMMEMORATION OF
THE QUADRICENTENNIAL OF DRAKE'S VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD.
The Plymouth statue is the exact replica of the one of Sir Francis erected at Tavistock.
I participated in a greenhouse shoot a few days ago where there were many rather exotic plants growing. This thick leaved succulent was just begging for some special processing.
Oops, Katie fell and fractured a bone in her wrist. She will have a cast for a few weeks.

One upon a time, many years ago, a volcano erupted and created a lava flow in northeastern Arizona. As the lava cooled, gas pockets were formed in the cooling magma. Many years after the lava solidified to form basalt, groundwater began percolating through the cracks and voids in the basalt. Because of the abundance of calcium in the basalt minerals, that groundwater was able to transport copious amounts of calcium carbonate. Under the right conditions the calcium carbonate formed large calcite crystals in many of the gas pockets in the basalt. These calcite crystals were very well formed and averaged about an inch or so in size. However, things changed and the groundwater began to transport silica in solution. Most of the calcite lined pockets were then filled with quartz, most in the form of agate, but some were filled with agate and then quartz crystals lined the final bit of the opening to form geodes.
Sometime after the first agate was deposited over the calcite the chemistry of the groundwater changed to the point that the calcite crystals were dissolved and removed. However, since the agate was formed over the calcite crystals the shape and size of the calcite crystals were preserved as casts in the agate. That is what is pictured here.

This film was made a part of my continued research of emotion and memory. I shot a number of short films after deciding that I wanted to give my subject a more tangible reality. I also wanted to continue to experiment with mood. This film for me shows the still cup at the front of the film as if it had been washed up on the shore like a message in a bottle. There is a feeling of loneliness and abandonment as if the cup has been taken out its expected setting and left.
