The summer of 2021 was a boiling hot one. It actually lasted up until the first week of December. Solution? Sleep through it.
Locality: Near Luna Lake, Arizona
One upon a time, many years ago, a volcano erupted and created a lava flow in northeastern Arizona. As the lava cooled, gas pockets were formed in the cooling magma. Many years after the lava solidified to form basalt, groundwater began percolating through the cracks and voids in the basalt. Because of the abundance of calcium in the basalt minerals, that groundwater was able to transport copious amounts of calcium carbonate. Under the right conditions the calcium carbonate formed large calcite crystals in many of the gas pockets in the basalt. These calcite crystals were very well formed and averaged about an inch or so in size. However, things changed and the groundwater began to transport silica in solution. Most of the calcite lined pockets were then filled with quartz, most in the form of agate, but some were filled with agate and then quartz crystals lined the final bit of the opening to form geodes.
Sometime after the first agate was deposited over the calcite the chemistry of the groundwater changed to the point that the calcite crystals were dissolved and removed. However, since the agate was formed over the calcite crystals the shape and size of the calcite crystals were preserved as casts in the agate. That is what is pictured here.
Working closely with an Arab production firm and a regional satellite broadcaster, USAID’s Office of Middle East Programs helped produce a full season of a compelling social drama, The University, for youth audiences. The drama follows the lives of a group of friends as they deal with the pressures of life and school in a globalized society.

90 Second Film
This film was made a part of my continued research of emotion and memory. I shot a number of short films after deciding that I wanted to give my subject a more tangible reality. I also wanted to continue to experiment with mood. This film for me shows the still cup at the front of the film as if it had been washed up on the shore like a message in a bottle. There is a feeling of loneliness and abandonment as if the cup has been taken out its expected setting and left.
Fred got his cast off! The leg is all abraded, weak, and painful. He can't step on it! He is back on cage rest so he doesn't have problems... It will take a few weeks to get strong and flexible again. This is the one that had a surgical reduction of an ankle dislocation resulting from what we guess to be an unfortunate encounter with a car...
Cast B 1973
As a fellow percussionist and also sound engineer, I took special notice of this picture.
This is from Cast B 1973, the year after I left UWP.
In 1972, UWP used Bozak sound columns for the PA system. Each column had six woofers and twelve tweeters.
But this picture shows a big departure and improvement, with horn-loaded PA speaker cabinets as seen on a large box behind the xylophone player.
By coincidence, a little later on I used the similar Cerwin Vega V30 speakers with an UWP offshoot band I played in called Klender & Winchester. It was a total blast!
