In old downtown Chicago Heights, which was dismantled in the 1970s so city officials could establish a slum, an art gallery has opened. This was parked out front.
There was a time at SRS when carpools were more common. Shelters were built, and still remain, at which carpoolers could wait for their rides. A shuttle was in service for those that missed their carpools.

My carpool and office mate Ella admiring a very big fish in the tank at Happy Fish Restaurant. I get the feeling eating this particular fishy is not exactly cheap.
My last day in Ljubljana. Plan was to go on the 15th all the way to Brno, in Czech Republic. But for some lazy reason, I didn't call my carpool ride until it was to late and this one was full by then. Plan B was then to hitchhike all the way in one day. I didn't wake up so early and had some trouble with the keys. All my stuff was had already been packed and brought by airmail to Lisbon, I just had some small backpack for the final week. This one I brought in my trip.
.
I attempted to hitchhike first to Maribor, then towars Vienna and finally Brno.
.
But it didn't start well. After 1h, nobody stoped for me for Maribor. I gave up, called my friend and went on the first available bus.
.
In Maribor I got a ride to the petrol station already in the highway heading to Austria and then some retired croatian couple drove me all the way to Vienna. They're some of the nicest people I've met, really happy couple. Their son had a really good croatian restaurant in Vienna, where I had dinner. They even called him on the way to check the buses from Vienna to Brno that evening. There was one at around 10pm.
.
they gave the station address and I went there. Little do they knew this ticket had to be bought online. I realized this fact after arriving in a bus station somewhere in a shady dark corner of a shopping mall, with no apparent ticket office. There I've met a big group of australians who told me this. Apparently, the bus was already full. I become friends with them and entered the bus, taking a seat and pretending to fall asleep. Of course, someone would notice. The moment finally came. A guy came with the ticket supervisor, looking for the place (he couldn't find because all of them was full). They then approached me and asked me for my ticket, which, of course, I didn't have. I said I thought I could buy in the bus. This one, was already moving and leaving the station. The supervisor shouts out loud to stop and kicks me out badly. I felt a bit embarassed, but I had to try. Lesson leaned.
.
My plan was going bad again. I stoped to assess my situation. I could try to go to the northen part of Vienna, where the hitchhiking spot was and try to do it, although one of the hitchhiking rules is never to do it at night.
.
I tried to stop some cars and after a shady guy that I could'nt understand offered me a ride that I refused, I decided to spend the night by the road, near a tree and some bushes. It was the first time I slept on the street. It was cool. Fortunately an hot summer night.
.
Next day early in the morning I started pimpin' again. My main concern was that I had a visit to the legendary Tugendhat House, in Brno, at 11 in the morning, something I had booked 1 month in advance and just couldn't miss.
.
First ride was a taxi. A turkish fella dropped me by the highway junction. Then my first truck ever. An austrian driver that couldn't speak a shit of english. Somehow we got along. He offered me some loquats as we tried to communicate with signs.
.
He dropped me some kilometres further in the highway. Then a car with a lady, that dropped me already in the national road, near the border with Czech. Perfect hitchhiking spot, in a long straight segment of the road, with plenty of space to stop and for me to be seen. Not long after, another truck stopped.
.
This time the guy spoke well english (for what I suppose are truck driver standards) and we had a pleasent ride. He dropped me in the suburbs of Brno right on the bus stop of the bus to the city center. Imagine a truck stopping right in front of the bus stop, people watching and all, and some guy just jumps out of the door, says goodbye, packs his stuff and joins them in the stop, as nothing had happened.
.
I then caught he bus and arrived at the main staion in the city centre. It was almost 11! I asked some infos on how to go to Tugendhat. I misunderstood the numbers and lost the tram, had to wait another 5 minutes. This could be fatal. Fortunately it was still on time. The tram left on the main street uphill and Tugendhat was on the top of another side street. It was 3 minutes to11. I ran with my bag, everything, tired of bad sleeping night and sweating and smelling like shit. But I didn't care. I just ha to get to the place. And I arrived right on time. Just dropped my bag and started this architectural journey as if the last two days had been completely normal.
.
What a day.
did i mention that Rome is full of scooters? and i mean they're everywhere! i have one of my own too -- a Honda Elite 150. but my scooter has been sitting in my garage these past four years, unused since my friend Rick died in a motorcycle accident in 2002. i just didn't have the heart to ride again after his accident. but after Rome, i'm starting to rethink that.
Will fill in description later...carpool is on the way and it is a pain to get to Flickr from work now. :(

Work started in August 2009 on this project to extend the Puget Sound HOV system into Pierce County. Crews are widening the freeway in the median to accommodate HOV lanes, or carpool lanes, in both directions of I-5 from Port of Tacoma Road to the King County line.
