Carousels were born from tragedy: A jousting accident killed King Henri II, Catherine de Medici’s husband, in 1559, driving knights to practise a safer alternative to these tournaments, such as spearing suspended rings with their lances.
For the birth of the Dauphin, Louis XVI held a carousel festival in 1662 in front of the Tuileries. In true Sun King fashion, it was all pomp and fanfare: 15,000 guests watched knights on their horses participate in jeu de bagues competitions.
The celebration which took three months to organise lasted only three days, but the Sun King did himself proud because the memory of this grandiose fête still lives on: the location where it was held is known today as Place du Carrousel.
Looff Carousel built in 1909. I have been riding this since I was a little girl (a long time ago). Everyone runs for the outside horses so they can grab metal rings from a dispensing arm. The rings have to be quickly aimed to throw into a clown's mouth on the wall as you ride by.
What a fine ride this carousel griffin is! There is a children's carousel on the Smithsonian Mall grounds.
I cavalli galoppano veloci,
e chi corre in bicicletta;
c’è chi mangia lo zucchero filato,
e chi canta a perdifiato;
regalandoti tanta gioia e allegria.
In the Courtyard at Tatton Hall, Cheshire. I do wish they wouldn't play Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as the music stays in my head all day and I have been known to sing a long and no you wouldn't want to hear that!!!!
Better known as The Galloping Horse Ride. This popular attraction is and still is a favourite ride for all ages. This one was seen at Hull Fair waiting for customers,
