The Zhongtong is also sporting it Invercargill Passenger Transport fleet number 218. IPT was taken over by GoBus on 1 April 2014.

I've spotted this before but the picture wasn't fantastic; this one shows its immaculate condition much more prominently. The condition, Motorcorp Riccarton plate surrounds, headlight guards and AA stickers strongly suggest an older owner, probably from new. CarJam suggests it hasn't even reached 100,000 km yet.

The Dennis Dart is a rear-engined single-decker bus manufactured by Dennis (later Alexander Dennis) in Guildford, England. More than 11,000 were produced during 18 years of production.

Most were purchased by United Kingdom operators, although examples were sold to America, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The Dennis Dart was conceived when Hestair Group (owner of Dennis and Duple) decided to produce a bus between a minibus and a full-sized single decker.

It was launched in 1988 and was originally offered with the Duple Dartline bodywork. It was 2.3m wide and was initially available in the length of 9m, but later available in lengths of 8.5m and 9.8m. It was powered by a Cummins 6BT engine and coupled to the Allison AT545 gearbox (the same engine and gearbox were also used in the MCW Metrorider, latterly the Optare MetroRider).

This model was sold to London Buses and to some operators outside London. Soon after it was launched, Duple was sold to Plaxton and the Blackpool plant closed. Plaxton decided not to acquire the design rights of the Duple Dartline and it was sold to Carlyle Works, who continued producing the bodywork from 1991. Production passed to Marshall of Cambridge in 1992 who bodied five Darts to this design. In 1993, Marshall updated the design to the C36 and later, the C37.

In 1990, Wadham Stringer became the next builder to body the Dart with a body called the Portsdown, but it was sold in small numbers and replaced by the UVG Urbanstar in 1995. In the same year, Wright bodied the Dart with the Handybus. In early 1991, Plaxton launched the Pointer (which was initially designated as Reeve Burgess Pointer as it was built at Reeve Burgess's plant, until later in the same year when it was transferred to Plaxton's Scarborough plant). Later in 1991, East Lancs bodied the Dart with its EL2000. In the latter half of 1991, Alexander launched the Dash. Another contender entering the market at the same time was the Northern Counties Paladin. Initially, it was built with a design of a barrel shaped windscreen with quarterlights (which were mainly sold to Warrington Borough Transport), later models had a deep double-curvature two-piece windscreen. It was phased out when Plaxton bought Northern Counties in 1995.

As the low floor buses became more popular in late 1990s, orders for standard-floor Dart dropped heavily and production ceased in 1998, with the final five delivered to Jersey Motor Transport. - Wikipedia

LEYLAND PANTHER BUSES

The Leyland Panther was a rear engined single deck chassis introduced in 1964. The PSUR1/1 was a stepped chassis designed for bus bodies. The PSUR1/2 was a straight through chassis designed for coaches.

However one of the Luxury Landliner coaches was built on a bus chassis. Initially the O.600 engine was standard with the O.680 option. The PSUR1B from 1970 had the O.680 engine as standard. Air suspension was optional. I believe all the New Zealand Panthers had air suspension.

Snapped at the Dee St. CBD terminus outside Reading Cinemas.

The Invercargill Bus Smart service was launched on the morning of Monday, December 3, 2012. There are four looped routes beginning and ending at Bus Smart Central (outside Reading Cinemas in Dee Street). The rebranded buses offer features ranging from free Wi-Fi to 10 per cent fare discounts for people who use the new Bus Smart Cards.

The services that replaced the 10-route system which included the Purple Circle buses and the Freebie bus, are:

- Waikiwi Link

- Windsor Comet

- Heidelberg Star

- Kew Connection

The city’s bus service is funded equally by Invercargill City Council ratepayers and the New Zealand Transport Association (NZTA) and a recent review found it was no longer cost-effective.

Council Roading Manager Russell Pearson noted: "The new service offers a cost-effective solution, focusing on increasing passenger numbers and keeping costs down. The new system is also a lot simpler with four bus routes that will go past bus stops every 45 minutes."

Bus Smart is the result of collaboration between the Council and Invercargill Passenger Transport (IPT). The work has involved rebranding and new bus routes, timetables, signage, bus stops and shelters.

The buses are driven by drivers in Go Bus uniforms.

Initiatives to encourage more people uses buses include:

- Free Wi-Fi aboard the buses.

- A texting service that allows people to text a bus stop number and receive the next two estimated bus arrival times.

- Bus Smart Cards: these allow people to load credit on to their cards to pay bus fares - and to receive a 10% discount. There is a one-off $5 fee for the card. Cards can be "topped up" at the Council Aministration Building (cash or Eftpos - no credit cards) or by bus drivers (cash only).

- Holders of Super Gold Cards will travel free during off-peak hours (they will also need to hold a Bus Smart Card, but when they use it during off-peak times, no fare will be deducted from their card).

- Audible bus stop information and large flat-screen displays screens on the buses. The screens will also display news, weather and information about the Bus Smart service.

- Low-access floors make it easy to step on and off a bus - and means the buses are wheelchair accessible.

- Bike racks. All Bus Smart buses are fitted with an outside rack capable of holding two bicycles.

INVERCARGILL CITY COUNCIL TO SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP FOR BUS SERVICE

The New Zealand Transport Agency has suggested the Invercargill City Council get advice on the Bus Smart service to lift passenger numbers.

Passenger numbers have continued to slide since the Bus Smart service was introduced in 2012.

At a meeting of the council's community services committee on Monday councillors said the service could not continue the way it was.

Cr Lindsay Abbott said the NZTA had looked at the council's passenger numbers and had suggested they get independent external advice.

The report to the committee said the external independent advice would assess the suitability of the current bus routes, which have operated for three years.

Further analysis of passenger type trends by route and times was being undertaken to define where changes had occurred.

Cr Lindsay Thomas said he would love to see the passenger numbers go up but council needed to find a way to do it.

Invercargill City Council roading manager Russell Pearson said the extra help would be to make sure the council had taken the best opportunities.

He said at present, the council did not have any way to encourage residents to take a bus when driving was so cheap and fast.

"The usage is really to do with the cost of petrol, because it's cost effective at the moment for people to bring their cars."

In March councillor Lindsay Thomas said the council had failed to maintain bus passenger numbers. - Stuff, 20 April 2016

NZ Department of Education Bedford VAS/PFK: The Bedford VAS was bought widely in the late 1970's and early 1980's by the Department of Education for use as a school bus. Numbers 200-390 had NZMB bodies with front door only and providing capacity for 56 or 60 primary school children. Numbers 391-418 had CWI bodies providing capacity for 46 primary children. Those licenced to carry adults are designated B29F. In the late 1980's a change of government policy meant the Department of Education ceased operating buses and the fleet was sold off to contract operators. Many continued to operate in the department's red and yellow colour scheme. Prior to the privitisation of the 1980s Department of Education buses and Post Office trucks were used by Justice Department in the weekends for groups serving periodic detention. Justice had to buy buses and trucks, frequently the vehicles already used. This move to increase state sector efficiency resulted in 2 fleets of vehicles - those used by Justice in the weekends and school buses and Telecom trucks used only during the week.

Uzabus is affiliated with seven passenger transport companies combining over two centuries of quality community service in the Manawatu, Horowhenua and Bay of Plenty areas and 30 years touring the South Island.

- Madge Coachlines: Madge Coachlines have a history of over 90 years service to the Manawatu and Horowhenua regions operation School, Urban and Charter services. Since 1920 the company has the reputation as “The regions carriers of distinction”. From humble beginnings the company’s fleet included an extended Model T Ford and an Indian steam bus. Madge have progressed with the times to luxury Tour coaches to meet today’s high standards of passenger transport.

- Bayline: On the 12th January 2015, Tauranga based company Bayline Coaches joined the Uzabus group of companies bringing with it a range of quality vehicles and a skilled team to further compliment the services Uzabus currently offers. Bayline Coaches started as Tauranga’s first motorised passenger service in 1919 and today is one of the largest passenger transport operators in the Bay of Plenty. The Company has had a succession of name changes over the years – trading as Tauranga Bus Service from 1946, Tauranga Mount Maunganui Bus Company in 1969 and Bayline Coaches since 1986. As the latest addition to the Uzabus group of companies Bayline brings with it a wide range of quality vehicles and a skilled team to further compliment the services Uzabus currently offers.

- Palmerston North Coachline: Established in 1991, Palmerston North Coachline has a proud history of providing quality tour coach services. The company originally specialised in charter services before expanding its offering to include school contracts. As the Palmerston North Coachlines fleet grew, so did its reputation for quality service and competitive quoting. In 2003 Palmerston North Coachlines joined the UZABUS Fleet and now offers a wider range of coaches for the benefit of passengers.

- Transbay Coaches: Prior to its renaming in 1995 to Transbay Coaches, the Whakatane bus company was the first major passenger transport enterprise in the Eastern Bay of Plenty. The company now provides school bus transport and charter services to a wide range of schools, community groups, private and corporate organisations. Travelling some of the most beautiful coastline in New Zealand, it’s easy to see why scenic and mystery tours are popular Transbay Coach excursions.

- Ranui Buses, Opotiki: Ranui Buses Opotiki joined the UZABUS Fleet in 2008 following 15 years of service to the local community operating school, charter and orchard transport services. The company now utilises systems and vehicles from the UZABUS Fleet, offering improved service and safety to all its customers.

- Kawerau Coaches: Kawerau Coaches joined the UZABUS Fleet in February 2014. Amazingly, this car still comes up on Carjam! I'd like to think this will be restored at some point, but if it were road-registered as is, it would be fantastic.

Vanguards are very hard to find here. They were revolutionary cars but not many of 'em sold here sadly.

ARDERN HOPES KIWIS WILL MAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORT MASK WEARING 'NEW NORMAL' AS MANDATORY RULE REMAINS

Source: 1 NEWS, 22/2/2021

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern this afternoon announced that Cabinet has decided to continue to make face coverings mandatory on all public transport, across all of New Zealand and regardless of Covid-19 alert levels.

It comes as Auckland will join the rest of New Zealand at Alert Level 1 at 11.59 tonight.

Ardern re-iterated some of the public transport face mask requirements at this afternoon's press conference.

"In small passenger vehicles such as taxis and Ubers, all drivers must wear a face mask, not mandatory for passengers but encouraged to do so," she said.

"People will be allowed to remove their face masks to eat, drink or take medication on public transport journeys if eating and drinking is allowed on the public transport."

In terms of exemptions, children under 12 and those who have a medical reason for not wearing a mask are not required to wear them.

"Drivers cannot stop people from boarding public transport who are not wearing a face covering as some people will have legitimate reasons not to. However, they will encourage members of the public to wear them," Ardern said.

She again reminded people to be kind to public transport workers, who are just doing their jobs.

"Aucklanders have already been wearing face masks on public transport since late last year and I hope we can make it a part of normal life."

Ardern says the order will be kept under review as vaccines are rolled out and may be updated at a later date.

MANDATORY MASKS ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT – EXPERT REACTION

Press Release: Science Media Centre, Monday, 22 February 2021

The nationwide rules around wearing face masks on public transport at Alert Level 1 will remain in place permanently.

It comes as Auckland joins the rest of the nation at Alert Level 1 at midnight on 23 February 2021. It’s been a week since the Alert Level went up in response to community cases of COVID-19 detected in South Auckland.

The SMC asked experts to comment.

Dr Joel Rindelaub, Aerosol Chemist, University of Auckland, comments:

“I support the move to require masks on public transit across the country. Public transport involves high-risk areas where distancing from people outside your bubble is not always possible, so it is a wise move to take a cautious approach. We have MIQ facilities across the country, so it would make sense to similarly require masks on public transit across the country.

“According to the latest data we have, widespread use of masks can help reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission in the community, even if the masks themselves aren’t 100% effective. Wearing masks is particularly important in indoors areas where there is less air ventilation compared to outdoors. In fact, most super spreader events have happened in indoor environments. Thus, wearing masks is a very useful tool in places like public transport, where a small enclosed space with minimal air flow allows for the transfer of tiny aerosol droplets between passengers.

“Proper mask wearing is also important, especially remembering to cover the nose. Since the nasal cavity has many sites where we know the coronavirus likes to attack (ACE2 receptors), it may be a key area for infection and it could be related to loss of smell and taste that so many COVID-19 patients experience.”

Professor Shaun Hendy, University of Auckland, comments:

“Aucklanders have all been on that roller coaster again with Ashley Bloomfield this last week, so today’s announcement that we can hop off for now will come as a relief for many.

“The week started with the announcement that there were new community cases with only a weak link to the border, much like the Auckland August cluster did.

“The whole genome sequencing then told us that there was no direct link to any known case at the border, but also that we were dealing with one of the new, more transmissible variants.

“However, a massive test and trace effort quickly contained the relatively small number of secondary cases and gave reassurance that we were not looking at the edges of a much larger cluster like the one we uncovered in August.

“Given that the cluster now appears well contained and there is no evidence of any larger cluster, it is appropriate that Auckland has moved to Alert Level 1. This case has shown us that we can’t be complacent – COVID-19 will continue to surprise us – but it also shows that when our community is vigilant and our systems are working well that we do have the measure of this virus.”

Conflict of interest statement: “Shaun Hendy leads Te Pūnaha Matatini’s COVID-19 modelling programme, which receives funding from MBIE’s Covid Innovation Fund and the Tertiary Education Commission.” - Scoop Media / Science Media Centre, NZ

Snapped at some stage during the 1990s showing the 1980 Mercedes-Benz 0303 ex Auckland “Peanut” laying over at the Porirua Station stop. This bus was acquired by Mana in 1992 and was used on Schools and Charter work. Body work was by NZ Motor Bodies and was a 41 seater.

Last recorded as going to Tavs Coachlines in Waiuku in 2003 and rego. has been on hold since 2007.

A CARJAM search reveals that registration RJ4501 is not now assigned to any vehicle.

Between 1977 and 1980 Auckland Regional Authority acquired 96 Mercedes Benz 0303 buses with New Zealand Motor Bodies DP41D bodies. These buses were used for longer services and charters although in busy periods they could be found operating on many shorter servces (eg Onehunga) as well.

The first of these was number 1001. At the time ETA Foods who made peanut butter and marketed nuts had an advertising campaign around the theme of 1000 peanuts in every jar of peanut butter. Chief character of the ads which appeared on TV and in print media was an animated peanut called Peanut 1001. The connection between 1001 and peanuts in popular culture was so strong that the series became known as ARA "peanuts".

In 1985 bus 1010 was converted to a tag axle bus. 18 more were converted to tag axles for the 1990 Commonwealth games with capacity increased to 49 seats. Conversions were done at the ARA North Shore depot. These buses were disposed of in the early 1990's. Some were sold before ARA became Yellow Bus Company in 1991.

I don't think this shape of Cedric was readily available in New Zealand, which CarJam backs up - this was first registered here in 1968.

1969 Mitsubishi Colt 1100F

Like a number of Japanese manufacturers, Mitsubishis started appearing overseas in numbers during the 1960s. One such vehicle was the now-rarely seen Colt Fastback, of which a few came here to New Zealand, distributed by a Palmerston North based agency, a few years prior to Todd Motors taking on (and making a success of) the selling of Mitsubishi products.

This early Mitsubishi fastback was encountered in the Christchurch Bush Inn carpark. While Carjam says the bodystyle is hatchback - and models of this Colt could be had with a rear hatch - this car had a separate boot.

After taking the photo I spoke with the owner of the vehicle. Being one of the only models of its type in Christchurch, it was in fact imported from Australia in 2010.

Proper autoshite, and apparently, according to CarJam, has travelled 600,000 kilometres... Somehow I doubt that! But it would have done a hefty mileage without a doubt. This is the oldest Sierra I have seen for ages, and sadly most of them look like this now, especially the wagons.

The saloons were considered more upmarket here and hence are kept in better condition.

Spotted while doing Christmas shopping, just in case anyone is interested to know how I ended up in this car park...

A tired ol' bus I spotted in Picton in 2014.

It was badged as an Isuzu... however CarJam said HL6544 was a "1975 Bedford VAM, White with Red, Heavy Bus/Service Coach".

What gives...?

Lachlan at the NZ Omnibus society tells me that "...the Carjam listing is indeed correct. This was a VAM new to the Auckland Regional Authority as No.798 with NZMB body. A lot of this batch were re-powered with Isuzu engines, hence the badge.

After the ARA, it went to Nelson Suburban and looks to still have the remnants of their colour scheme. Last listing I have was as a caravan in Picton with expired COF in 2001, so it's interesting to see it is still there!"

Eastbourne Bus Company No. 11, a 1989 Isuzu ECR570, snapped in Kent Tce., Wellington, during the early 1990s. In July 1994 it became Cityline No. 11 and was fitted with Austral B45F bodywork. NZ’s $10 MILLION INVESTMENT

Published: 19 January 2016

A $10.5 million investment from ManaBus.com will see 15 new buses, including 13 double-decker coaches come into service in New Zealand’s North Island.

One new coach hits the road this week (No. 9), while the remainder will be delivered over the next 12 months, courtesy of Kiwi Bus Builders.

"Kiwi Bus Builders is known for quality builds, is reliable and has an innate understanding of all of the many bus building rules that differ from country to country," ManaBus.com CEO Sheryll Otway says.

"With such a large contract we were determined to ensure we utilised local nous and that the local market benefitted from the investment."

The new Euro 5 coaches offer more spacious layouts including scenic top deck seating, table-equipped areas and reliable Wi-Fi.

The new double-deckers take 65 passengers and include a new layout including a power source and USB outlets at every seat, on-board toilets and full wheelchair access.

The investment comes on the back of a successful year for ManaBus.com, which launched in November 2014 and has since taken a quarter of a million passengers around the North Island.

The organisation also acquired South Island inter-city operator nakedbus.com in May last year.

Much of the success has been due to smart marketing strategies, offering one fare on each service for just $1, for passengers who book well in advance.

"We do not plan to increase the average prices for the new fleet," Otway says.

"The $1 fares are absolutely a success as it has given a lot of people the chance to travel."

ManaBus.com announced an increase in the frequency of travel around the North Island to meet demand, ahead of the bust summer season in September last year.

I took this photo 5 years ago of the Bedford specifically - a rare automatic model as it happens - not noticing the Corona Coupe next to it at the time! I was just browsing my upload folders and couldn't believe my eyes when I realised it was another Corona.

According to CarJam it had its registration cancelled earlier in 2011, and it appears to also be a VX model like my 1987. Should investigate this one...

Snapped at 10.40am, the 23 seater shuttle that departs from the InterCity bus stop outside the Southland Museum in Invercargill at 10.45am daily and runs via SH6 from Invercargill to Queenstown passing through Winton, Lumsden and Kingston, a service which offers a journey time of 3 hours 30 minutes.

This can include a bus change on a stop-over of 30 minutes in Mossburn after turning off SH6 and travelling on SH94 from Lumsden. Understand it returns to SH6 from Mossburn on SH97 to continue on to Queenstown. Fares are $48 one way for adults.

This is in sharp contrast to the Invercargill-Queenstown service offered by InterCity which runs via SH1 to Dunedin and then State Highways 8 & 6 to Queenstown (from Milton) with a travelling time of some 8 hours and involves bus changes at Gore (the Te Anau-Christchurch InterCity service) and Dunedin (Dunedin-Queenstown InterCity).

Tracknet is a bus company that operates between Queenstown, Te Anau, Milford Sound and Invercargill.

Tracknet connects Southern cities with Fiordland’s Great Walks including the Milford, Routeburn, Kepler Tracks and also the Hollyford, Greenstone and Caples Tracks.

Since 1988 Tracknet has had a policy that only utilises a vehicle which has enough seats to do the job. Therefore they do not always require 45 seat vehicles and their associated unnecessary use of fossil fuels.
