SOME THOUGHTS ON THE REBUILDING OF BUSES .....
Nissan Diesel New Zealand has drawn criticism from some quarters of the bus and coach industry over the prototype used for the development of the school bus replacement exercise. It has been interesting to note that some of these comments come from BCA members whose livelihood is not derived from the operation of a school bus fleet.
It has also been suggested that the use of such a vehicle undermines the "pride" of the industry. With NZ being regarded overseas as the dumping ground of the Pacific "pride" could hardly be considered a component in providing a service to the Education Dept. School bus operators I'm sure, would gladly welcome additional recompense if this was an additional reward to the already meagre returns.
It has been suggested that the level of work done to the Wanoa vehicle was insufficient to justify classifying the bus as remanufactured. To clarify this, I note the following:
In the case of the body it was entirely stripped down, inspected and approved by the local VSR inspector, given rollover approval and reskinned. One wonders how many operators of imported buses go through this procedure before putting them into service. After aU the reason these vehicles are making their way to NZ is because they are failing to gain M.I.T.I. approval and are approaching the end of their economical 12 year domestic life. And the reason for replacement - corrosion within the monocoque frame and/or body unacceptable to local Regulations.
The chassis is made of 450 grade steel, plasma profile cut and folded to NDNZ design and assembled to suit the particular wheelbase and componentry being used. As the latter varies from vehicle to vehicle the design is changed accordingly. In order to satisfy the regulations axles and steering componentry is crack tested and issued with the appropriate certificates and items such as shackle pins and bushes, wheel bearings and brake linings and the like all replaced with genuine new parts.
Taking the above into consideration it has nevertheless been expressed by some that the particular vehicle used denigrated the industry and undermined the image the association felt was its due. During the presentation of the vehicle at the Palmerston North Seminar, we were at pains to invite members present not to look at the product but to consider the concept. In hindsight it might have been more prudent to have exhibited the vehicle with a new fibreglass front and made it more cosmetically acceptable. If we could be held to account it was perhaps our injudicious use of the particular vehicle in question. However for the purposes of the exercise there was little point in using a later model bus as the impact and intricacies of the work involved and procedures required to be followed would not have had such a dramatic effect.
One wonders who it was in the association who came up with this years conference theme "Thinking outside the square" when a novel approach to an increasing problem is offered as a viable and cost effective alternative and is met with such immediate criticism from within. - Sourced from The Omnibus Bulletin, August 1998.

MOTORHOMES SET FOR JUBILEE
January 20, 2016
Levin will become the motorhome capital at Easter when more than 800 motor homes are expected to converge on the town.
The Levin Event Centre will be nose to tail with motorhomes and caravans as about 1500 members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) come together for the association's annual convention, which this year is also its 60th jubilee.
Helping organise the event for the last four years, NZMCA Wellington committee member Christine Miller said it was important to get a venue that could accommodate all the motorhomes as well as provide facilities big enough to accommodate the trade and market stalls.
"We had looked at Trentham Racecourse but one of our committee ladies from Levin suggested [here] and we all came up to have a look. The Event Centre had everything we needed. It's a very smart venue and means we don't need to hire a marquee," she said.
While members can expect a fun-packed four-day event that includes entertainment, bands, workshops, local sight-seeing excursions, children's programme and even something laid on for pets, members of the public are welcome to drop in over the Saturday and Sunday, said Mrs Miller. "We've got a huge variety of market stalls from food, crafts and jewellery to dog accessories as well as trade stalls that will include the latest caravan and motorhome models. People are welcome to have a look around and chat with members about this fantastic lifestyle."
She said there are more younger families joining the motorhome travel trend.
The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association has 63,000 members currently who spend more than $650 million annually for the New Zealand tourism industry.
Levin and Foxton were officially recognised as Motor Home Friendly Towns (MHF) by the NZ Motor Caravan Association last year and Horowhenua District Mayor Brendan Duffy expected Shannon would receive MHF status in time for the Easter gathering.
To achieve MHF status, a town must provide certain amenities, including access to a public rubbish dump and drinking water, refuse and recycling facilities, medical facilities, shopping for groceries and vehicle servicing facilities. Almost 40 towns nationwide are designated motorhome-friendly.
The New Zealand Motor Caravan Association convention will be held from Thursday March 24 to Monday March 28. Open public days are Saturday and Sunday, 11am-4pm.

Meanwhile in news published by the Gisborne Herald at the end of November, residents and visitors to Gisborne are set to benefit from an increase in bus services between here and Napier after bus company InMotion announced it was adding more routes to two of its operations.
ManaBus.com and nakedbus.com chief executive Sheryll Otway said it would start a new Gisborne-to-Napier bus route, with four buses running daily.
“We are very excited to add the Gisborne-Napier route to our network and as we are in growth mode, we’re certainly looking forward to adding additional services to our current network.”
Buses will depart from the Gisborne i-Site at 10.30am and arrive in Napier 3½ hours later, with return trips leaving Napier at 3pm.
The route will operate alongside the Gisborne-to-Rotorua route and a good take-up of services is expected.
Napier services will also be extended to two buses a day between Napier and Wellington.
Tourism Eastland chief executive said having more buses would have positive benefits for visitors and travellers, as well as the continued operation of the Gisborne i-Site, which already acts as the main Gisborne ticketing agency for Nakedbus, Intercity, Interislander and Bluebridge, as well as Kiwi rail services around the country.
“Our team are often run off their feet with ticketing services and this plays a key role in maintaining the i-Site operation.
“The link south with other Nakedbus and Manabus services will give our team more options for the customer and that can only be a good outcome.”
Mr Perry said additional coach services would be great . . . “particularly at peak times when there have been occasions in recent times when seat availability has been stretched.
“Of course everyone knows that a bit of competition is healthy and I am sure the customers — the domestic and international travellers using the service will benefit.” - Gisborne Herald 30/11/2015
Quite a neat little thing with some snazzy 90s decals; this one was imported from Japan in 1998. CarJam suggests this one had only done between 103 and 107k at the time of this photo.

An incredible car; not only is it an NZ new 216 Tomcat in immaculate original condition, but CarJam would suggest this car had travelled between an astonishing 20 and 22k from new when I took this photo 5 years ago. Surely this must be worth some money? The condition, NZ new status (most of these here were Japanese imports), low mileage and automatic transmission tends to suggest to me an older, long-term owner.
Only 4,321 of these rare classy sedans were made over a 5 year period, with a 2.3 straight six (not a 1.2 as suggested by CarJam.) Armstrong Siddeley actually developed some unusual coupe utility versions for the Australian market in particular.
A blast from the past.

Snapped on Marine Parade in Napier on 14 October 2013, a web-sourced view of one of the two US school buses that had been converted for a Napier City Council initiated Art Deco tourist service – this one named Belle - which began in April 2013 but canned in May 2014, the last services operating on Sunday, 4 May 2014.
Napier Mayor Bill Dalton said at the time that lower than forecast passenger numbers combined with high maintenance costs meant the service was not a viable venture for the council to continue operating.
DECO CITY BUSES TO BE DISCONTINUED
Napier City Council Media Release
At a Council meeting last week Napier City Council passed a resolution to discontinue the Deco City Discoverer bus service and put the buses up for tender.
The two customised Art Deco-style buses, Veronica and Belle, will complete their last circuit of Marine Parade, Ahuriri and Westshore, on Sunday, 4 May 2014.
Napier Mayor Bill Dalton says while the feedback from patrons has been positive, lower than forecast passenger numbers combined with high maintenance costs mean the service is not a viable venture for Council to continue to operate.
“The school holidays will provide an opportunity for people to take a ride on the Deco buses if they haven’t done so already,” Mr Dalton says.
“There are lots of interesting things to see and do enroute the buses and the commentary provided on-board gives patrons a great overview of the history of Napier and Ahuriri.”
The buses will be put up for tender late May 2014.
NAPIER MAY SELL 'ART DECO' BUSES
22 March 2014
Napier City Council is considering selling its Deco City Discoverer buses after only a year in operation.
The buses began operating last year.
It bought two old American school buses in 2012 for $800,000 and a further $200,000 was spent converting them to art deco style. More money was then needed to fix several mechanical problems.
The buses began operating in April last year and have since struggled for patronage.
A report to the council's Finance Committee is recommending they be put up for tender.
Council chief executive Wayne Jack said the buses have also been unreliable, with higher than expected maintenance costs, and the council has lost about $200,000 due to lack of patronage.
"They have been very popular for charters and use in weddings so I think (for) a private operator there is an opportunity there. But using it on a daily basis really hasn't worked." - RNZ News

Quite a good looking car in silver with the vinyl roof. CarJam says this was imported in 1983, probably from the UK.
The 1992 MAN 10.180 in AOA Tiger Tea livery - similar to that once sported by Dunedin trolleybus No. 10 - snapped during a visit to Dunedin (reckoned to be in January 2003) standing outside the then Citibus Newton Ltd. depot, a bus which now, according to Carjam, is a motor caravan.
