The third generation Caprice was launched for the 1977 model year, very much dowsized from the earlier generation cars, while increasing headroom, rear passenger leg space and boot capacity The Project was developed under the working title Project 77 and cost GM some $600 million The introduction of such a small full-size car was considered quite a risk for General Motors. To help ensure the car was a success, preview clinics were held by Chevrolet which returned very positive results and the 1977 car became the best selling car in the US, compared to the earlier Capricebeing only third best seller. The 1978 and 1979 model year cars had only minor revision with the front and rear being refreshed
The 1980 Caprice Classic saw its first major revision since the 1977 downsizing. To further improve the fuel economy of the car, efforts were made to reduce weight and improve aerodynamics. The Caprice received all new exterior sheet metal, without drastically changing the look of the car. To improve aerodynamics the hood was tapered lower, while the trunk area was higher. The grille was now an egg crate style while the tail-light panel featured three separate square lights per side. All the doors and components within were redesigned to be lighter, including the window crank mechanisms, Greater use of aluminum including in-bumper reinforcement and in-sedan/coupe radiators helped to further reduce the overall weight of the vehicle. 1980 models were approximately 100 pounds (45 kg) lighter than 1979 models.
1986 marked the first major exterior restyle since 1980. The front fascia was restyled to have a more aerodynamic look. . A new smaller sleeker grille with prominent vertical chrome divider bars replaced the egg-crate style used in 1985. The rear taillights were restyled to look more modern and detailed, but continued to have three lights per side. The sheet metal remained unchanged; however, the new front and rear restyles updated the appearance of the Caprice.

Here's a real oldie but goodie, made back in the day when a big wagon didn't mean an SUV! This Caprice station wagon is a 1985 model.
The full-size Caprice - named for a swank New York restaurant - was Chevrolet's top-line model. In 1985, the car was in its third generation, which had debuted for 1977, and a fourth-generation front drive Caprice had been planned for 1983, but the big rear-drive car got a reprieve when fuel prices came down after the 1979-80 oil shock. While the sedans had six-cylinder engines for 1985, the wagon, which obviously needed more power for hauling purposes, got a 305 V-8.
The Mark 3 Caprice lasted until 1990. The fourth-generation (and last) Caprice was a new design on the same platform.

This is a shop unit complete with FSD markings. Since it just sits at the Brooklyn Bridge entrance, it really doesn't need to be a new car. Still the Chevy looks quite good.
These big Chevrolets were quite popular in NL in the 70s and 80s. They were very useful as a taxi.

"Three-box" Chevrolet Caprice Classic in final 1987-1990 form. This model was first introduced in 1977 and was replaced in 1991 with a much rounder, more aerodynamic shape. This Caprice is painted in San Diego Sheriff's Department's "Duffy Green," named for Sheriff John Duffy, who had the fleet painted his favorite color. Duffy is gone now and the Sheriff's cars are now black & white.

The Chevrolet Caprice is a full-sized automobile produced from the 1965 to 1996 model year. Introduced in mid-1965 as a luxury trim package for the Impala four-door hardtop, Chevrolet offered a full line of Caprice models for the 1966 and subsequent model years, including a "formal hardtop" coupe and an Estate station wagon. The 1971 to 1976 models are the largest Chevrolets ever built. The downsized 1977 and restyled 1991 models were awarded Motor Trend Car of the Year
The Second Generation Caprice was launched as a complete redesign in 1971 on a longer 121.5 inch wheelbase and featuring bold, Chrysler-like fuselage styling. The new styling was highlighted by a Cadillac-like "egg-crate" grille with a "Caprice" emblem in the center and brushed metal trim surrounding the taillights on the rear deck.
The cars were renamed to Caprice Classic for the 1973 model year. The 1973 facelift included a new cross-hatch grille, 5 mph (8 km/h) energy absorbing front bumper and revised square taillights, again mounted in the bumper. New emission standards added EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valves to engines, and horsepower ratings were reduced. The standard Turbo-Fire 400 cu in (6.6 L) two-barrel was now rated at 150 hp (112 kW) while the only optional engine was the Turbo-Jet 454 cu in (7.4 L) V8 produced 245 hp (183 kW) with dual exhaust
The 1974 models featured a new grille. The taillights were moved above the new 5 mph (8 km/h) rear bumper. New thick "B" pillars and fixed rear quarter opera windows were new on two-door coupes,
The 1975 models received a revised grille and taillight trim and six-window styling on four-door models. The dashboard, radio and climate control graphics were revised; the speedometer read up to 100 mph (160 km/h), and had smaller numbers for kilometers per hour. The Caprice convertible would be discontinued after the 1975 model year along with its full-size B-body counterparts including the Oldsmobile Delta 88, Buick LeSabre, and Pontiac Grand Ville. Just about 8,350 Caprice Classic convertibles found buyers in 1975.

A Chevrolet Caprice Classic as built from 1977 until 1990 as part of General Motor's B-cars. Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac offered versions of the same car. Altough downsized compared to their predecessors these cars are still huge by today's standards. It has a 5.7 litre V8 engine with 173 PS.
1995-1996 Chevrolet Caprice Classic, in Virginia City, Nevada. Presumably former Nevada Highway Patrol? Auto historians would also be interested in the Dodge Tradesman on the left and the Daihatsu Rocky in the back.
Not to be confused with the PPV "re-boot", the original Chevy Caprice was a very popular police car in the United States.
From the old boxy style, with plenty of straight lines, to the bubble style 4th generation Caprice Classic, it gave the LTD and "Crown Vic" a run for it's money, so to speak.
