These were planted by the previous owners. Perhaps more than 40 years ago. Not unheard of but quite rare to last this long.
A single shot from earlier this year. This may be a "basic" green grasshopper, but even the most basic grasshoppers still look pretty cool to me :)
One thing I love about macro photography is how different things are from one year to the next. Last year I went to the same area of this park on almost the same day, and I found hundreds of caterpillars of many species. This year, I think I probably saw fewer than 10. The winter was apparently much warmer, so I assume the caterpillars all had moved beyond that stage of life by the same point in time given that spring started earlier. The overall biodiversity was much greater than the prior year for the same reason, though, so the trip allowed for more interesting subjects than I anticipated.
