The Canadian flag celebrated its 60th anniversary on February 15, 2025! This day marks the moment in 1965 when the iconic maple leaf flag was first raised on Parliament Hill. The flag, designed by Dr. George Stanley, replaced the Canadian Red Ensign and has since become a powerful symbol of Canadian identity and pride.
The American Snout is a rare-to-uncommon butterfly in Ontario which, like the Monarch butterfly, breeds here but is unable to survive the winter. It is a tropical butterfly, found as far south as Argentina, and its permanent range reaches only as far north as the southern United States. However, it is strongly migratory, and southern populations in the U.S. undertake large-scale migrations through most of the eastern United States and into southern Canada each breeding season. It is found regularly in the Carolinian Zone of southwestern Ontario, with strays reaching as far north as Algonquin Park, Manitoulin Island and Ottawa
The Cold Moon is the name given to the full moon in December. It's called the Cold Moon because it appears during the coldest time of the year in the Northern Hemisphere when winter is starting to set in. This name comes from Native American traditions, particularly the Mohawk tribe.
this Cold Moon will be a lunar rarity because it will rise and set at its most extreme northerly points on the horizon, a phenomenon known as a major lunar standstill.
This piece is by Fritz Rudolf Hug a Swiss painter, illustrator, and mosaicist born in Dornach in 1921 and active until his death in 1989. He was especially known for his expressive depictions of animals, often with bold brushwork and a mix of realism and abstraction. His work ranged from oil paintings and lithographs to large-scale public mosaics, and he exhibited widely in Switzerland and abroad.
The Siamese cat works
Hug created several feline portraits in the mid‑20th century, and his Siamese cat images in particular have become popular in the vintage and mid‑century modern art market. Many are signed simply “Hug” in the corner. Circa 1960s–1970s.

I think I paid $2.00 for it? We hung it up in our apartment in the 90s. I have rediscovered it and will get it properly framed.
