While Zelda and Josie played, and Juan catapulted unhappy birds into wooden structures, I sat under a tree and picked up where I started.

Chris was so sweet and bought me all these books I told him I wanted to read this summer.

One of them is My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult.

Oh my gosh.

It's just so....

Let me put this in an understandable way.

Relatable. Minus the lawsuits Anna is putting her parents through. Or the relationship between Campbell and Julia (which I also find intimate). But the effects everyone's actions have on each other.

First of all, the older brother, Jesse. My older brother Zack could be his twin. Zack doesn't live with us anymore but he lives about six blocks away in a gang ridden neighborhood. I worry about him so much. My dad doesn't like me visiting him, because its so dangerous. The reason Zack moved away was because of mom. I cried when he left. I miss him so much, but sometimes I see him around town, with a beer in his hand, or a needle. But he doesn't set stuff on fire.

Beside's the brother situation, I remember when my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Me waking up one night and seeing take chunks of her hair out. It scared me, because I though only boys were bald. I remember I made my dad shave my hair off, so I could be just like my mom. Some of the girls in my classroom didn't know my mom had cancer, and they called her a freak and made fun of me.

All the nights I spent in the hospital waiting room. I went there so often, everyone knew my name. My brother kept telling me she was going to die, but I told him God would never let mom die because she loved Him so much.

But then one night, mom stopped breathing. We were in the room with her. I was about to fall asleep and then a loud, continuous beep sounded. All these doctors rushed in and me, my dad, Zack, and baby Juan were forced out.

When my dad told me she had gone to Heaven, I thought he meant that she went to Heaven and will be back. So I waited. And I waited. And I waited, until it finally hit me she was dead.

I promised myself I wouldn't ever care for anyone else. I hated those people who had cancer, and survived. Why couldn't my mom survive? She wasn't a bad person. She never lied. She was always there for me. I tried to avoid the topic of cancer, or illness.

Lucky for me, I made a friend, named Claire, who's brother has been battling cancer since he was three. It annoyed me he was still alive. As I spent more time around Claire, and Jake, I realized that some people come and go, regardless of their past. Emma, just nine years old, died in a fire. A life with so much potential, just taken away. But you know, that's life. We all die eventually, some sooner than others. The important thing to remember, is that if you truly love someone, no matter whether they are with you, six blocks away, or looking down on you from Heaven, they are always with you.

If I could, I would marry Jodi Picoult. I'm not kidding. Although I prefer Chris, but you know.

If you read all this, you are crazy, because I'm pretty sure you have been killed mentally by my annoying life story paragraphs. But you are so awesome, and in the future, I think things will be less confusing, hopefully. Because if they aren't then that's just a waste.

Part of my ongoing cancer series that I want to turn into a book to raise money for a cancer charity. I used some of my left over medications and projected them in different places as a metaphor of how cancer can affect you and be on your mind no matter where you are, it can be hard to escape from that reality but it's part of the struggle to continue living your life as normal as possible despite how you may feel. I'm still trying to be one of those cancer survivors that seem to do everything they put their mind too.

Week 34 out of 52 Weeks for Dogs for my Zooie.

I really do enjoy this 52 Week Group. I am not very creative when it comes to shooting my dogs. I enjoy the fact that I have to come up with new ideas. I notice that so many of my fur kid's photos look alike. This week I followed the challange and shot Zooie outside in the backyard. He took time out from his hunting critters to give me a sweet look. My heart melts when he looks at me this way.

Master Sgt. Scott Kapanke holds some of the coins he received during his 365-day deployment with the coalition air force transition team. Kapanke was diagnosed with stage four cancer in 1995 and was medically retired while he underwent treatment. He beat the cancer and was then medically cleared to re-enlist in 1997. Since his return to active duty, he has taken a special duty assignment with the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and deployed for 365 days with the coalition air force transition team to Southwest Asia to train the Iraqi Air Force on a C-130 aircraft maintenance. Kapanke is with the 437th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron.

In the movie Crash, Don Cheadle’s character says, “You have to crash to feel anything.” That was profound for me. I needed to be hit hard to grow and heal. Having cancer is a journey that continues. There are always blood tests and medications to take. But it is a constant reminder for me to feel joy and gratitude for my health and family.

The biggest gift I have taken from having cancer is complete acceptance of self and not worrying about other people’s opinions of me. It is very liberating and was a tremendous shift in how I lived my life. A friend of mine put it very simply, “Oh, you mean you’re telling me you’re human?”

My dad absolutely loved my dog. She appreciated him too ☺️ So on his birthday, during lockdown in Michigan I attached balloons to my dog and she delivered them and a card to him since his immune system is compromised I couldn’t be near him. He was thrilled & surprised when he saw who greeted him on his birthday.

Part of my cancer series.

I got this idea while watching a show on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in soldiers, some of them on medication and on the battle field. They weren't getting the help they needed. It made me wonder how would people know if someone else needed help, if they couldn't tell by looking and the person doesn't feel comfortable asking, thought that fit in with my cancer series. People in need of help, wether their comfortable asking for it or not. There's not always a big help sign but that doesn't mean it's not needed. I remember starting treatment feeling like I can get through this on my own, then one day a friend came by to help even though I didn't want it. I would have been able to get through it on my own but I wouldn't have been as happy without her there.

Now I'm interested in turning this series into a book to raise money for cancer charity. Have something positive come out of this, and try to help others. I created a group to try and help with that goal.

Cancer Survivor: Warren Roston, M.D., Internist, Pulmonary Physician

Age at diagnosis, 55

Metastatic melanoma, 2008

I learned the importance of human connection and how to receive it. Rather than keeping my illness quiet, I reached out to everyone in the community, hoping they could give me hope and strength. It worked. I tell people now that if they know someone sick, reach out. When in doubt, make the call and just say, “I’m thinking of you.” It doesn’t matter what you say, just make the call. It was phone calls and emails that got me through the day.

Cancer Survivor: Lori Marx-Rubiner. Program Director

Age at Ddiagnosis, 36

Breast Cancer (Llobular Ccarcinoma), 2002

“Why me?” was the wrong question for me. “Why not me?” is the better question. “Why me?” keeps you stuck there. “Why not me?” puts you back into the world again. As far as I’m concerned, you’ve given up the battle when you ask, “Why me?”

I worried that after my treatments I would forget to bless every moment. I wanted to remember that every day I woke up was a day that I had not been promised, and that my child is the biggest blessing I have ever been given, even when he makes me mad. And I still realize that he needs more hugs and kisses than reprimands.
