It was an intense evening...
Rapid fire from the time the doors opened for the benefit art event where 7 of us were making instant art for auction to support Artists Against Cancer.
The tickets were pricey and the pressure to create at the top of your game was high. I did my main piece (forthcoming) early on and basically spent the evening making portraits for whoever was willing to write a check.
The other six artists were drawing and painting from the three art models 2 rooms over. For the first time since I started doing this event, I never shot a single model. I did these all night.
They were done in minutes using Fujiroid* prints glued down and painted on the spot.
I'm not sure how I feel about them. I did my best. These are the only ones I had a chance to reshoot on the fly. The rest are off in the world somewhere. People kept asking me if I had fun and my response was always, "I think so."
In all honesty the highlight of the evening was meeting someone who was previously an "Invisible Friend" here on Flickr but one whose work (and spirit) I have admired for a long time.
More tales from that soon. But for now, these are the uneasy product of a totally unquantifiable night.
But thank you, Brittany... you made my night...

*Fujiroid is basically the only licensed version of poloroid still being produced. I won't call them polaroids because they're not. Polaroid ruined their world wide market through myopic idiocy and ended an era for millions of artists. Well done guys....
March 2, 2013 - The 11th annual Tubbs Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer Snowshoe Series was held in Frisco Colorado at the Frisco Nordic Center. Hundreds of people participated in 3K and 5K Snowshoe hikes to help raise breast cancer awareness, and raise funds to help find a cure. Tubbs Romp to Stomp serves to educate women about the importance of early detection and to raise funds for Komen Affiliates. I am posting a series of pictures I shot at the event that highlight the participants.

What if … I say the wrong thing?
What if … I become fatigued?
What if … my memory fails?
What if … I get confused?
What if … I make a new friend?
What if … I learn something new?
What if … someone makes me smile?
One of the side effects of chemo treatment are an enhanced desire to hide away from the world. Voices in our heads shout out all the things that could go wrong when we leave our ‘safe zone’.
Although those negative thoughts can be overwhelming, I continue to seek out the positive voices that share the benefits of social interaction, of spending time with friends, of making happy memories.
Today someone will make me smile.
Ovarian cancer usually happens in women over age 50, but it can also affect younger women. Its cause is unknown. Ovarian cancer is hard to detect early.
The sooner ovarian cancer is found and treated, the better your chance for recovery. But ovarian cancer is hard to detect early. Many times, women with ovarian cancer have no symptoms or just mild symptoms until the disease is in an advanced stage and hard to treat.
Cancer risk factors include exposure to chemicals or other substances, as well as certain behaviors. They also include things people cannot control, like age and family history. A family history of certain cancers can be a sign of a possible inherited cancer syndrome

Smoking more than one pack of cigarettes per day have a greater chance of developing lung cancer. Smoking is linked to about 80% to 90% of lung cancer deaths. Using other tobacco products such as cigars or pipes also increases the risk of lung cancer. Tobacco smoke is a toxic mix of more than 7,000 chemicals. Cigarette smoking can cause cancer almost anywhere in the body. Lung diseases caused by smoking include COPD, which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Cigarette smoking causes most cases of lung cancer. If you have asthma, tobacco smoke can trigger an attack or make an attack worse. Smokers are 12 to 13 times more likely to die from COPD than non-smokers.
Marie Curie have set this up - there are 2,100 daffodils, representing the number of Marie Curie nurses currently looking after patients suffering from cancer. I suspect everyone knows someone who has, or has had, cancer of some sort which, in my mind, makes this a good charity to support...

Jamies dad and Aidan on Christmas 2009.
He's been sick for over two months and we couldn't get a diagnosis. They kept saying a blockage or infection of the kidney. Well after losing lots of weight..being in constant pain, having a stent put in, multiple MRI's, CAT scans etc..
We found out today that he has Kidney Cancer and that it is in the lymph nodes. He will see the Oncologist tomorrow to see what stage it is and go from there.
Please, please keep him and our family in your prayers, send good thoughts, swing chickens or whatever...
Cancer is a horrible disease..but we know that with good treatment, support, love and a lot of hope and faith that we will win.
If I am not around as much..this is why. I know I haven't commented on my 365 friends' pages as i'd like to but we just have been running all over with his dad being sick..
I don't even know if I will get to continue on in my 365 since I would probably miss a day here and there..if I dont get to stay in the group, I will still follow your streams and be jealous of all of your wonderful creativity!.

When you are first diagnosed with cancer it is completely normal to feel scared, shock, disbelief, anxiety, guilt, sadness, or anger. Every person copes with cancer in their own way. It is not unusual for cancer patients to wonder "Why has this happened to me?" It is not uncommon for patients to doubt the accuracy of the diagnosis, especially if they don’t feel sick.
Many patients say it is hard to think about anything but their cancer. A cancer diagnosis affects not only the cancer patient, but also their friends and family. It is not uncommon for people to mentally shut down when they first hear they have cancer.
Personal beliefs are a major factor in determining what a cancer diagnoses means to a patient. Many times cancer means facing your own mortality. Accepting a cancer diagnosis and figuring out how cancer will play a role in your life and death can be challenging.
Deciding on a Treatment
Many cancer patients feel very anxious about choosing a treatment. Some have seen friends or family members go through rigorous cancer treatment, and are afraid of experiencing the same pain or suffering. Remember that the treatments for cancer are constantly improving, and every patient responds to treatment differently. If you or someone you love is really terrified of the treatment do some research, or ask your doctor. Often knowledge about the treatment and the cancer really helps to alleviate some fear.
Is Cancer My Fault?
Amanda Before Her Surgery
Some cancer patients feel guilty about not noticing the cancer earlier, or wondering if something they did caused the cancer. They may question their work or home environment. They may worry that their children will inherit the cancer genes.
Telling Everyone About Your Cancer
Many people with cancer wonder who they should tell about their diagnosis and when. It is normal to feel pressure to share your diagnosis, but feel free to wait until you are comfortable. There is no set time when you have to tell others you have cancer.
Cancer Support Groups
Mary Anna, Cancer Survivor
Some people are reluctant to seek counseling, but studies have shown that patients in support groups have lower stress and higher survival rates. Counseling provides emotional support and helps cancer patients better understand their illness. Many organizations and hospitals offer support groups for cancer patients, survivors, and their families. Support groups take many forms, from highly structured monthly group meetings to financial assistance. For more information on support groups in your area see our Cancer Events Calendar or talk with your healthcare provider.
If you do not want to attend a support group, find a family member or friend who will listen to you. Try to avoid people who openly feel sorry for you. Remember you need someone to help you through the hard times, not someone who will remind you how bad they are.
If you are a religious person consider talking with your religious leader. Many religious people find hope and peace in knowing how their cancer fits into the bigger picture. Prayer and meditation have been scientifically proven to help in the healing process.

The HPV vaccine is recommended for routine vaccination. HPV vaccines can be given starting at age 9 years. Children who start the HPV vaccine series on or after their 15th birthday need three doses, given over 6 months. If your teen isn't vaccinated yet, talk to their doctor about doing so as soon as possible. Early protection works best.
It's never too late to get vaccinated against HPV even in your 30s and 40s

The picture shows breast cancer cells disseminate from a tumor organoid -- a lab model extensively used to mimic a primary tumor. The cells are automatically detected and color-labeled using computer vision techniques. Different colors represent different migration programs. Image provided by Bo Sun, OSU College of Science.

For cancer patients, the immune system seems to lose the ability to find, target, and kill abnormal cells including cancer cells. Intermittent Fasting may be looked as a potential augmentation approach to cancer prevention or treatment.
Be sure to consult your medical team and your doctor first, and always practice intermittent fasting with medical guidance
