This inflatable colon was on display at Henry Ford Hospital as a part of Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.

Tamoxifen is a type of cancer medication used to treat and prevent breast cancer. Although this drug is one of the less expensive cancer drugs, comprehensive health coverage can help ease the cost burden just when you need help most. Unfortunately, many insurance companies do not provide adequate coverage for cancer treatments. If you have breast cancer, you might have already discovered that insurers do not like to pay for cancer-related expenses. Although Tamoxifen will not bankrupt you like some other cancer drugs, you should still be prepared to fight for your right to coverage.

Before filing a claim, read your health insurance contract. There are two sections that you should look at very closely, the schedule of benefits and the section called limitations and exclusions. The schedule of benefits is a long list of procedures that your insurance company will pay for. Although your insurer might not mention specific drugs, you should make sure that cancer treatments are eligible for coverage. You should read over the limitations and exclusions section for much the same reason. You should not try to file a claim if cancer treatments are listed under exclusions. Doing so would be a guaranteed waste of time. If you have any questions about Tamoxifen coverage, talk to your insurance provider for clarification.

Start by reviewing your own insurance company's policies regarding cancer and preventative treatments. If you start out by knowing what they allow or expect, you will have less let-down and struggle later. If they don't cover treatments like Tamoxifen, find a company that will. In many cases, you can even talk to the drug company about getting on a program that will help you afford your medications. Of course, having private health insurance is always going to be easier and less hassle. Private insurance companies aren't out to get you. They are just out to make a profit.

When it comes to maintenance treatment and ongoing care for things like cancer and other chronic diseases, insurance companies lose a lot of money. If they spend months paying for expensive prescriptions that you need for your situation, they are losing profits because you are ill for a longer period of time. In most cases, insurance companies deny these medications because it simply costs them too much money to pay for them. Take the time to find out about cancer treatment options and prescription coverage when you are looking at health insurance so that you don't find out that you aren't covered when it is already too late.

A friend of a friend has been battling cancer, which started out as melanoma. His wonderful group of friends will be holding a benefit dinner to raise money for his wife and young daughter. The theme for the night is "Hunt for the Cure" because Hunt is their last name. I made 50 of these packages to sell and hopefully this will help a little.

This was my first attempt at RI transfers...it was definitely a time-saver and I'll be trying it again soon. Black is the colour for the melanoma awareness ribbon.

Photo: As the sun was setting I headed to a favourite park forest near my house. It was incredibly windy that evening. When branches began intermittently falling from the sky, I decided to for the safety of my equipment and myself, it was best to leave.

My April blood test results were not good. My cancer levels (M protein) increased from 13 to 20. Quite a jump. It seems that Ninlaro (chemo), which I added to Pomalyst (chemo) in January, has not been as effective in reducing my cancer levels or keeping them stable compared with Pomalyst + Dexamethasone (steroid), which I stopped last July due to eye damage.

This update which should have been posted a week ago was delayed as my memory card reader broke and it took a few days to purchase a new one. This week my mind has really been wandering. I’m not in pain or getting headaches, it is just that I’m easily distracted with a very short attention span. So doing tasks that involve concentration for a extended period of time is really challenging. It is all good though, I’m happy that I’m well enough to do what I love.

M protein (g/L) (0 = no cancer detected)

Apr = 20

Mar = 13

Feb = value missing (believe similar to Jan)

Jan 2018 = 13 (began Ninlaro chemo - Jan 8th)

The goal of multiple myeloma treatment is to improve survival, by reducing the cancer cells (myeloma) in the immune system as much as possible for as long as possible. The more myeloma (m protein > 0), the greater likelihood of cancer symptoms affecting my everyday life.

My Myeloma Specialist follows my blood test results and I expect to be contacted if we need to immediately meet to discuss a change in treatment. I remain hopeful for better results from my upcoming monthly blood tests. Thanks for your support and positive energy.

Not about to let cancer get me down!

To recap: On Sunday, April 22nd, I completed Cycle 42 Week 3. I have Multiple Myeloma and anemia, a rare cancer of the immune system. It is incurable, but treatable. Since February 9th 2015, I have been on Pomalyst and dexamethasone chemo treatment (Pom/dex). On July 16th, my dexamethasone treatment ended, due to eye damage, as reported by my Glaucoma Specialist, from long-term use. On January 9th I began Ninlaro chemo as my cancer levels have been steadily rising.

Argonne's Center for Nanoscale Materials Scientist Elena Rozhkova, along with researchers from the University of Chicago, have developed a way to attach a antibody to nanomaterial titanium dioxide and kill brain cancer cells.

Above: The bare titianium dioxide nanoparticle bonds with an antibody and attaches itself to brain cancer cells. When exposed to concentrated white light, the titanium dioxide creates free radicals of oxygen that causes the cancer cells to die.

CAMP HUMPHREYS – More than 350 people, dressed is various shades of pink, turned out to help Army Community Service’s Exceptional Family Member Program and the Girls Scouts join forces, Oct. 21, to host the “Breast Cancer Walk to Raise Awareness,” at Zoeckler Track.

With October being National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Takesha Green, the Camp Humphreys Exceptional Family Member Program manager and the event organizer, said she wanted “to provide a platform for our community that would bring awareness to not only Breast Cancer but cancer as a whole.”

Leslie Edens, the wife of Brig. Gen. Timothy J. Edens, the 2nd Infantry Division assistant division commander for support, provided opening remarks and then helped lead the first lap of walkers around the track during the “silent lap.” With the completion of the first lap, Staff Sgt Jorge Jimenez, of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Battalion (Attack), 2nd Combat Aviation Brigade, played music throughout the remaining laps.

Green said that she wanted every “woman, man and adolescent across all age groups aware of the importance of breast health and screening exams.”

Today, with advanced medical treatments and early detection, breast cancer is no longer considered a death sentence. There are more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors in the United States alone. And with early detection the survival rate is over 90 percent.

“This event was more than I could have ever imagined,” Green said. “It kind of took on a mind of its own. The overwhelming support from the community and throughout the Peninsula was mind blowing. I had to pause for a minute just to take it all in. I couldn't have asked for better weather and greater community support. The vibe alone was just amazing.”

Whether they were running or walking, “people were enjoying themselves and having a great time,” she added. “This event definitely exceeded my expectations.”

This is a photograph from the Lucan Harriers Athletic Club "Tom Byrne Memorial" 5KM Road Race and fun run which was held in Lucan, Co. Dublin, Ireland on Sunday 11th May 2014 at 11:00. The race invited runners, joggers and walkers of all levels including those training for the Women's Mini Marathon, Parkrunners and Fit4Life Groups. The weekly PARKRUN which is held in Griffen (www.parkrun.ie/griffeen/) was cancelled this weekend to allow runners to take part in this race instead. The race started outside SuperValue Lucan. Passing by the Lucan Harriers Club House the race proceeded into Griffeen Park where the participants completed about 2.5KM of the course before returning back on the road to the finish on the Lucan Harriers track. Thankfully the unseasonally cold and wet weather didn't dampen the atmosphere and over 200 people participated in the event. Well done again to all at Lucan Harriers AC for a superbly organised 5KM event. The race commemorates one of the founding members of Lucan Harriers AC - Tom Byrne.

We have an extensive set of photographs from today in the following Flickr Album: www.flickr.com/photos/peterm7/sets/72157644652669113/

The majority of this race is run within Griffeen Valley Park which is managed by South Dublin County Council. The entire Park consists of over 200 acres. Griffeen was developed during the 1980s and comprised of a series of public open spaces from around the Lucan area. The River Griffeen flows through the park as it flows to meet the River Liffey in Lucan Village.

When you click on either of these you will be presented with the option to download the image. Remember just doing a right-click and "save target as" will not work on Flickr.

I want get full resolution, print-quality, copies of these photographs?

We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs

We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?

The explaination is very simple.

Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.

ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.

Creative Commons aims to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!

My Oct blood test results show my cancer levels (m protein) have spiked to 29 from 21 in late September.

I spent about 5 minutes trying different self-portrait ideas, before I was too fatigued to continue and had to leave to rest at home. Although my disease causes chronic fatigue, it has felt more pronounced, like having a full brain, making thinking and physical activities much more challenging.

At this rate, I expect that my November blood test results will also increase and that in December chemo treatment will begin again. Not going to panic. Just staying calm and positive.

Happy November!
