This unusual vehicle with a split personality was prepared for the 1994 Motor Show at the NEC to illustrate the versatility of the Discovery, coinciding with the introduction of the 300 TDi engine.
The base vehicle is actually a 200 TDi modified to look like a 300 series with modified lights and dashboard but retaining its 200 TDi engine. A great deal of effort went into cutting everything in half – the winch and sunroof are particularly noteworthy! All the leftover parts were made into a mirror image vehicle and this is believed to have been scrapped.
After the Motor Show it went on a bit of a World Tour and at some point it acquired the names of a Belgian Camel Trophy team.
The vehicle runs and drives but is obviously not road legal.

We drove 3 oldtimer Landrovers from Belgium into the Catalan Pyrenees and back. Off-road, off-grid and with a minimal ecological footprint. Nobody would find traces of us sleeping next to a ravine or in a forest.

There are several parts of K317 that are not original such as the roof rack and seats. There are a few Camel Trophy parts that are missing, which can easily be acquired such as...pick ax, shovel, sand ladders and limb risers. This vehicle currently runs very well and shifts smoothly. The timing belt history of K317 is unknown to the current owner and should be replaced by the next owner. There is no heater box installed in K317 or battery kill switch. Headliner is new. There was previously a sunroof installed. An aluminum patch now covers the hole.

The Renault 4, also known as the 4L (pronounced "Quatrelle"), is a hatchback economy car produced by the French automaker Renault between 1961 and 1994. It was the first front-wheel drive family car produced by Renault.
The car was launched at a time when several decades of economic stagnation were giving way to growing prosperity and surging car ownership in France. The first million cars were produced by 1 February 1966, less than four and a half years after launch; eventually over eight million were built, making the Renault 4 a commercial success because of the timing of its introduction and the merits of its design. Although originally marketed as a small estate car, it is now regarded as the first mass production hatchback car.
