This is the camel, a two-humped one that occurs in Central Asia. In the desert of Saudi Arabia, participants in the Dakar rally will see the dromedary, a one-humped camelid found in the Middle East.

I met this animal at the Dutch Dakar.

Another sandstorm,

thorns for lunch,

water water

whither art thou?

and whoever thought

camel races sport

have never run

in desert heat,

alas miles and miles

on burning feet,

no oasis in sight

nor shade tree

only sore hoofs

endless drudgery

(yes, it’s hump day)

and now identity crisis:

my ancestry DNA

came back – not a camel,

I’m a dromedary.

When it rains, lots of temporary lakes are formed everywhere in the desert. Animals, including camels, find plenty of water and grass. This is like paradise to them. We have received more rain this year than usual, by the way.

The dromedaries at our local zoo are quite comical and seem to know how to ignore the camera pointing at them... they will strike a pose however, when given the chance, lol

On our visit to Fuerteventura we made a fantastic camel ride through Montaña Colorada and Calderon Hondo volcano, dating from about 50,000 years, in Lajares (La Oliva).

The volcano Calderón Hondo is one of the seven volcanoes of the Bayuyo in the best state of conservation. During the tour it is possible to climb it and also look into its crater. From its summit, at 278 meters above sea level and on the edge, you can admire a large crater 70 meters deep and very nice views of Fuerteventura.

"Just like a caravan of camels walking in the desert, be durable against the adversities of life and walk with decisive steps."

There wasn't much in the way of sky colour the morning I shot at Camel Rock in Bermagui on the NSW Sapphire Coast in April, but the morning light on the rocks still made for a satisfying shot.

Happy Halloween! Since we are in Mongolia, what could be better than taking on the role of a camel herder! It was a cold morning in the Gobi Desert as evidenced by the camel's breath. Fortunately, we warmed up quickly as we climbed the steep dunes with the camels. Immediately after I snapped this shot, the camel came up and kissed Evelyn on her shoulder. What a memorable morning we had with these magnificient animals!

This adorable dude camel was such a poser.

Where they once walked in the sands of the outback these camels now walk on the sands of Lighthouse Beach.

A popular tourist attraction the intrepid thrill seeker can take a 30 minute ride on a camel along the beach.

These three camels were enjoying a much deserved day off and were at home on the range.
