Greek soprano Maria Callas (orig. Anna Cecilia Sophia Maria Kalogeropoulou) was born in New York on 3rd Dec 1923 and studied at the National Conservatory from Sept 1937 and later at the Athens Conservatory with Elvira De Hidalgo. She made her opera debut on 2nd April 1938 as 'Santuzza' in Cavalleria Rusticana at the Olympia Theatre in Athens.
She sang at the Verona Arena in 1947 and at La Scala 1951 to 1958 & 1960 to 1962. In the USA she made her Metropolitan debut in 1957/58 and appeared there again during 1965. she sang at Chicago 1954 to 1956 and Dallas 1958/59.
She appeared at Covent Garden 1952/53, 1957 to 1959 and during 1964.
She starred in the 1969 Pier Paolo Pasolini film 'Medea' for which she was paid $65,000 plus expenses. This was filmed in and around Italy, in Syria and Turkey.
Maria Callas died in Paris on 16th Sept 1977.
Of my two calla lily shots, I finally decided I liked this one better. Let me know if you disagree. I just thought this was a little more interesting composition, even though I really like the profile shot against the sky too. I just like the curl of this one and the detail.

Sie ist die einzige Art der Gattung Calla und der Unterfamilie Calloideae. Der botanische Name wird gebildet aus dem griechischen Wort, kallos = schön und palustris aus dem lateinischen Wort paluster = sumpfig
Die Drachenwurz wird im Gegensatz zu den meisten anderen Blütenpflanzen durch Schnecken bestäubt.

Calla (Bog Arum, Marsh Calla) is a genus of flowering plant in the family Araceae, containing the single species Calla palustris. It is native to cool temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, in central, eastern and northern Europe (France and Norway eastward), northern Asia and northern North America (Alaska, Canada, northeastern contiguous United States).
It is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant growing in bogs and ponds. The leaves are rounded to heart-shaped, 6–12 cm long on a 10–20 cm petiole, and 4–12 cm broad. The greenish-yellow inflorescence is produced on a spadix about 4–6 cm long, enclosed in a white spathe. The fruit is a cluster of red berries, each berry containing several seeds.
The plant is very poisonous when fresh due to its high oxalic acid content, but the rhizome, like that of Caladium, Colocasia and Arum, is edible after drying, grinding, leaching and boiling.
The genus formerly also included a number of other species, which have now been transferred to the separate genus Zantedeschia. These plants, from tropical Africa, are however still often termed "calla lilies", but should not be confused with C. palustris.
