Howrah bridge in Kolkata must be one of the busiest in India and possibly in the world. A fascinating piece of architecture. Underneath flows the Hoogly running to the bay of Bengal.

People around the street.

Calcutta (Kolkata) generates around 4000 MT of waste everyday and the local municipalities collect round 3932 MT of solid waste per day on an average. The ragpickers of the city are one of the key resources who help in keeping the city clean by assisting in the recycling process. (Source: www.kmcgov.in)

 

Sadly these ragpickers are paid way below minimum wage & such gruesome poverty level has forced them into drug addiction, its hard to come across any ragpicker who is leading sober life.

Having been invited to join the 'double-decker buses outside Britain' group, I had to come up with something that qualified for submission! An Ashok Leyland articulated double-decker crossing a remarkably deserted Howrah Bridge, Calcutta, 30th August, 1991.
