This question requires using calculus to discover the position equation and acceleration equation using integration and differentiation from the velocity equation
My calculus class is currently learning about the optimization of functions of multiple variables. At the end of lecture today, the professor gave us something to think about before the next lecture.
He said, "We're going to define a function H and call it Happiness. We want to maximize our happiness, which may seem difficult, but fortunately, our happiness is only influenced by three different variables.
"The first is beer." The lecture hall explodes in laughter.
"The second is gasoline." The lecture hall continues to laugh, but this time more in confusion as to how gasoline can bring us happiness.
"And finally, the third is rice." The lecture hall once again explodes in laughter; the professor has just finished telling us that as long as we have unlimited amounts of beer, gasoline, and rice, we can have an unlimited amount of happiness.
Unfortunately, we have a budget, represented by the dollar sign, which is why we have to optimize our happiness based off our personal desires of beer, gasoline, and rice.
"If you're thirsty but don't have a car, then a lot of gasoline will won't do anything for you, but beer will make you really happy. If you're really hungry, then the rice will make you happy."
I think that is one of the funniest real-world connections any of my math teachers have ever made before.

Along the Mekong River in Phon Phisai, there are many gazebos. In some of these, the library has placed stands with books to read,
The gazebos are frequented by teenagers who come to smoke or drink or study their phones, or intensely study their boyfriends/girlfriends. I don't think that studying calculus is high on their list.
A photo from a morning spent at the IKEA... when we arrived to the kid's department I couldn't resist to take some stupid photo with the phone camera ! That's me solving some difficult calculus with the help of modern technology :)
my prof: shaves his head to hide his premature balding, wears socks in his sandals everyday (even in winter!), and asks us to call him "sid"
Students in Abby Ross' Calculus Class review their work towards the end of spring semester, 2019. Photography by Glenn Minshall.
Yes, I do use a ruler when I draw my graphs
fraction lines
data tables
shapes.
I'm actually rather horrid at math.
I think it's because I was born in the states.
Seen next to the trail. I can't quite read what's in the exponent so I can't check their work, but it doesn't look like they got very far anyway....
There was another stump across the trail with the old Integral ( e^x ) = f(u)n joke scribbled on it. :-)
